GREAT teams usually end up in the Top 10 or higher at season end - maybe top 15 if you stretch it - BSU, TCU etc.

VERY GOOD teams are usually in the Top 20 - maybe 25 if you stretch it

PRETTY GOOD Teams are at the bottom of the poll getting some votes

GOOD Teams are teams not mentioned above but that you beyter not get too cocky about or they may sneak up and bite your butt - Florida State, Air Force, UW in my opinion, and many many many more.

MEDIOCRE Teams may get lucky once in a while on their home field

POOR Teams can hardly beat anyone and won't ever beat BYU at home or on the road

Two more for your list that go above GREAT

Undefeated teams either have a lousy schedule or the planets align and just about everything goes their way that year.

Dynasty teams who win every year will be sited for recruiting and other violations within a few years (See Tennessee, USC and anyone want to put money on Florida?)

So true.

Going undefeated takes more than a great team. You really do need a good amount of luck which is why the bcs-outsiders are screwed. Not only do MWC or WAC teams have to be great -- they also have to be lucky in order to get in a bcs game.

I think it is harder for a MWC team to go undefeated than it is to win most of the bcs conferences.

Cort is pretty good, has a lock on the ILB spot for sure. He is really a smart football player and great tackler. He does not have the prototypical size/frame, but he is a baller and a hard worker. If I had to guess what the starting Husky defense would be come opening day (not accounting for any freshmen), I would say this:

DE - Everett Thompson and Kalani Aldrich

DT - Cameron Elisara and Alameda Ta'Amu

OLB - Mason Foster and either Alvin Logan or Victor Aiyewa

ILB - Cort Dennison

CB - Marcus Trufant and either Anthony Boyles, Quinton Richardson, Vonzell McDowell or Adam Long

S - Nate Williams and either Will Shamburger or Nate Fellner

At the risk of sounding like I know everyone in the world:

My son's were in High School in the era when Todd Marijuanavich (his nickname) went head to head playing for Capo Valley High School - where two of my kids attended - Vs Coach Johnson's son (was his name Brett?) at El Toro High School as the two most highly touted QBs in the nation playing for schools about 5 miles from each other. His nickname may explain why he saw Purple Haze in the game your tag line mentions. His other nickname was RoboQB for being programmed by his father not to even eat a Hostess Twinkie. I digress.

My best friend's son is Cort Dennison. You can bet your bippee that no one will be beating CD out for the starting ILB spot this year or next year - barring injury. That is one local Utah player that BYU and Utah will probably both wish they had offered a schollie when this year and next are done. CD's parents are Ute boosters - so the Utes really missed the boat on this one.

I love Sarkisian. He will make fewer rookie mistakes this season. UW was good enough to go bowling last year. Do not let the winless season or last year's mediocre record fool you. UW played the toughest schedule in the country the last few years. Even this year - OOC games with BYU and Nebraska and I forget who else. UW was very good last year.

I love Bronco. I have met him and heard him speak. He will get more out of this team than paper would indicate possible. On paper - BYU will be horribly inexperienced and lucky to have a winning season. On the field - they will be bowl eligible.

I love BYU - but I think the Huskies take this one. I hope they don't. I hope CD has a great game but the Cougs win a close game by picking on some less experienced Husky defenders. Then I hope UW wins the rest of their games and plays for the BCS championship Vs BYU in a rematch. More likely - BYU will be 3rd or 4th place MWC behind TCU, AirForce, and Utah and will also lose to UW and FSU. If Unga does not return - could be worse.

Mars. Just had a thought - maybe a little integrity and attention to detail would help your logic. Where in my comment did you see the word GREAT associated with the UW team. THey were not GREAT. THey were not VERY GOOD. they were GOOD.
You called them "very good", which I disagreed with. http://www.cougarcorner.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3145&p=24920&hilit=#p24920

You later defined "very good" as a Top 20-25 team, but then you said they weren't even "pretty good", so that should stop your self-righteous train right there. Washington had the ability to surprise teams last year, and will be even better this year, but you're contradicting yourself in how you describe them.

And I'm still curious about where Washington fans think their record will end up this year, and where the Huskies may (or may not) end end up in the rankings.

So far, I think it will be a toss-up at Provo, but I think we got the edge since you will have a new QB.

I think we end up between 6-6 -to- 8-4 based on the schedule. I do think our Dawgs go bowling this year, even if a "crappy" bowl game.

And while I have no clue what UW record will be I say the 'toss-up' at Provo favors the Cougs for two reasons: 1) At home they're quite good. and 2) Bronco has done very well at 're-loading' and we have a great class coming in this year.

BYU history shows that when we have a big game early in the year, we get up for it. In particular, the first game of the year. And especially at home. I like our chances, but it really does hinge on QB play. With a new starter, no one really knows what we get out of the position. We all see the potential, but until they hit the field and perform, that is all it is--potential. I hope we win, but I'd call it is a 40% chance as of today.

Agreed, Home openers under Bronco have favored the Cougs. If it comes down to early-season execution, you have to like BYU's chances.

Washington lost out on the #1 recruit. BYUs Nelson will match Locker's passing/running abilities. Heaps will surpass Lockers passing abilities. If BYU loses it will be via our own fault. Besides, Sark is a Cougar fan.

Here is the report from the Spring Game - yes UW actually had one. First - MARS - that is why I posted definition of terms and clarified where I saw UW - Good - not great - not mediocre last year. If they played a MWC schedule last year - UW would have gone bowling.

Cort Dennison had a great game until he was pulled in the the 3rd qtr due to a knee injury. The knee was fine by the next morning, so they cancelled the MRI and will just observe it. It is fine and he will be fine. But I am sure that sent him a scare and these players are all just a freak twist away from not being able to play the game they love and have prepared so long and hard to play.

Locker was not in very long and did not play particularly well. Nick Montana had a great game and led the #2 offense to the winning TD late over the #1 defense. Of course by then the defensive starters were mostly out of the game. Joe Montana and his wife were there for that game. CDs parents were also at the game. Apparently it is a big deal up there in Seattle.

So the message here is - one should not jump to too many conclusions regarding what one thinks they have seen or heard about Spring Ball. Montana will not unseat Locker - barring injury. But he looked much better in the spring game.

UW also has lots of hype surrounding their recruiting class. Until we see it on the field, like with BYU - who knows. UW still has a killer schedule, and as such, will barely go bowling, most likely. UW needs to hunt down an dkill the man that made their schedule over the past 3 or 4 years.

Florida State, ah yes. But it was not game 1, though it was the first at home. Under Bronco, BYU is 3-2 in the first game of the year, but 3-0 the last 3 years. He lost his first 2 years to Boston College in Provo and at Arizona.

As to first home game, BYU is also 3-2, with the losses to FSU and BC.

Let's hope BYU gets to 4-2, on both accounts, this year.

Without your stud RB and breaking in a new QB, I think Locker and the Dawgs have the edge, even on the road in Provo. Our offense looks to be explosive this year, and even though we lost Donald Butler (MLB) and Daniel Teo-Nesheim (DE), the talent level across the board has improved.

I can tell you one thing, this exciting off-season in CFB has got me stir crazy waiting for the season to start :bug:

Figured I would just bump this thread instead of starting a new one.

A Ute posted this BYU breakdown on one of our forums and I was hoping you could comment on it's accuracy? How much do you honestly think the departures will impact the Cougars this year?

"They are replacing their QB, two best RBs, 1 OL, and 2 best TEs. Tight end is very important in their offense and they litteraly have no experience coming back. Unless the true freshham Quezeda can have an amazing year, they are going to struggle on the ground, cuz what they are bringing back is sad and marginal, even for a mid major. I am sure you all want to see Heaps in the dirt early and often. He has already been annointed the next messiah of BYU football and all but gaurenteed BYU would win a NC while he was there...

On defense they lose both DEs, 3 of 4 LBs (they run a 3-4-4 scheme), and two LBs were kicked out of school one of which being Uona Kavienga who was expected to start (he red shirted last year after transfering from USC), and lost their best safety. Their defense should be easily exposed. BYU has always struggled with a running QB, and seeing how they are breaking in 6 new starters and Locker is very mobile I really like yalls chances."

I didn't realize you all lost that much experience (if true), I am really thinking my dawgs have a better shot at winning than I previously thought. Our offense will be lethal this year, thats no joke.

First off, it's not all true--Uona Kaveinga came to BYU in January. He will be redshirting this year and playing in 2011 unless he opts for a church mission. He is still very much a part of the team. I don't know what other LB he is talking about. We had a RB switch to LB in the past few weeks who just transferred to Hawaii, but he wasn't kicked out.

As for the rest of it, we are returning our #2 RB who was good enough for us to beat Oklahoma when our #1 was out. Also, we didn't lose two RBs as he claims--we lost a RB and a FB. The DE thing is a stretch--the guys we will have at DE this next season were splitting reps with the #2 guy last season, and both should be a speed upgrade over what we had last season. Other than that, he is right.

Don't worry though--last time BYU replaced a RB, QB, two TE's (all to the NFL, like this season) and half their defense, they went 11-2 in that following season with all the greenhorns:

http://espn.go.com/ncf/teams/schedule?teamId=252&year=2007

This is a program that doesn't rebuild--they reload. I can only hope the Husky players share this Ute fan's sentiments.
C
CAFB_04-12
I don't think we see much drop off at TE. That is a position that historically has played very well at BYU regardless of who happens to fill in. We thought we were going to lose TE skill when Harline left, and we ended up with George and Pitta who set records and broke through inept Utah tacklers.

RB is deep as well, but unproven. We had flashes of excellent RB play last year from Kariya and DiLuigi. I'm excited to see how well Quezada actually plays. He looks like a stud.

Matt Reynolds (OL) is on the Outland watch list. 'Nuff said. OL is going to be fine.

I personally only wonder about QB and Linebackers. And Corners. If Heaps is as good as he should be I think we'll be okay (maybe not record setting, but good enough) there as well.

It's natural to feel like you're rebuilding when you replace a QB as good as Max Hall was. So, I imagine there will be some growing pains (I think UW will be a strong challenge right out of the blocks) that will give us an early idea of where we are actually weak.

So has Heaps won the starting job then? I hadn't heard that, that will be cool! Would love to see Jake vs. Jake 8)
