Just watching the MTN replaying our 2008 game against UNLV. (Oh, thanks MTN for replaying such choice games) Our Secondary was so bad...just mistake after mistake, ones I've never noticed, but our play in 2009 was significantly better, I expect that same jump in 2010, our D should feel faster, more aggressive, and have a bigger hand in winning games. I like that experience and talent mix up the secondary, this should help the front and LBs with coverage and take pressure off. Our offense rebuilding shouldn't be much of a factor especially if Unga comes back.

If we can find a decent safety opposite Rich we should be fine, however, our LBs and DL will need to apply pressure. Last year we couldn't even get pressure with jorgenson and denny so this year we could see some effects of that. For example, if you look at the first half of the SDSU game last year, we couldn't get to the QB so eventually our zone defense (played flawlessly by the secondary) turned into a man to man against superior athleticism and speed resulting in huge plays by SDSU. I don't see how we are going to get pressure this year especially on the DL. But assignment wise our secondary should be fine for a good 3 to 4 seconds anyway.

From what I've heard through the grapevine--and let's just say I'm privy to some pretty inside information--our defense this year will be pretty pathetic. The coaching staff just hasn't seen the cohesion they would expect at this point. I though take a more possitive view. From my personal observations, I think our defense will be slightly better than pathetic. And believe me I know defenses. They don't call me hell2rouble for nothing. Any true-blue, longtime BYU fan should be able to guess who I am and know I am a credible source.

Great post. A zone is a fine defense, if you don't have lock-down corners. But you have to get pressure on the QB or even an average QB can pick you apart and find the soft spots to move the ball down field. I too am concerned with how we'll get pressure on the QB.

That's over simplifying the SDSU game. SDSU came out and ran a max-protect blocking package that they had never fielded before. On the passing plays, they were leaving seven or eight men back to block our 3 to 5 rushers, preventing any pressure from getting to the quarterback. Then their two or three tall, fast receivers would just outrun our secondary with the extra time.



I agree that we didn't get pressure on the quarterback last year, but it was not Jorgensen and Denney's fault. Looking at SDSU as a microcosm of the year is misleading as it was an all-or-nothing gamble on the part of SDSU's offensive coordinator.



The problem in our defense is at the middle linebacker positions. We have not had enough quickness at that position to allow our d-line to pin their ears back and go for the TFL and trust the guys behind them to stop what gets past them. It also affected our pass defense schemes as the corners and OLBs had to cheat to the inside to compensate for the lack of lateral coverage at the MLB. That is the problem that was present every game of the season. The SDSU issue was a once in twenty years issue.

The defense should be better this year than last, but I'll judge us based on the Florida State and TCU games, who each could score at will last season.

On a scale from 1-10, 1 being the worst D you've seen, and 10 being the best D you've seen.



What would you rate last years defense?

AND

What would you dare predict our new defense will be(based on what we know)?



Remember that our little brother up North says we have the "slow white guys" defense...

This is quite comical. Apparently, the troll had thought they had stumbled into a YEWT message board, because they have now had 7 defensive guys drafted the last 2 years, so I suspect that their D will be just as described. No real playmakers on the D-line, The LBs will not be as good, and the secondary will suffer. Hmmm. So apparently the YEWT D will be slightly better than pathetic. Sounds right on the money.

Thanks hawkwing for clarifying my posting pedigree. I figured most of my big fans--the ones who follow my posting closely, like my good buddy Mars--would know who I am. But some of the newcomers probably don't know who I am and don't understand how accurate my past insights have been. I wanted to just come straight out and let everyone know the way you did. I just didn't know how to do it without coming off as a braggart. You did, however, miss one important detail: I once posted under the username Lugar09cougar on another BYU Football site. But hey, no hard feelings.



Well I think the board is breathing a collective sigh of relief knowing I am back. I may be posting under a new username now, but I've got the same great insight and information that I always had. :) :) :)
