So I keep seeing this online: "NCAA rules state that a conference must have at least six teams with five years of playing experience together, so the remaining five big twelve teams would likely have to separate to find homes."

Is there any reason why the Mountain West can't merge into the Big Twelve and dissolve the Mountain West? The Mountain West would provide the 6 teams of five years playing experience together.

I'm not sure I like the idea, but is this a possibility?

6 teams together for 5 years WITH BCS ELIBIGIBILITY the MWC can't offer that, we've never had auto eligibility.

If Kansas, Missouri, Iowa State, Baylor, and Kansas State (say they talked Colorado out of the Pac 10 or kept Texas Tech     ) could convince another team from the Big 12 to stay... they''d still be a BCS conference... just a terrible one... worse than the Big East..

and Missouri, Kansas, Iowa State , Baylor, and Kstate might be fine with that considering their other options (i.e. desperation)... but they can't find a partner that desperate from the remains that agrees.

If they could do that, then add TCU, BYU, Utah and 1 of the conf USA Memphis/Tulsa/Houston... they have a respectable conference; BUT would the MWC teams leave the comfort of a conference they basically run to a risky conference where Missouri and Kansas would want to call all the shots (keep in mind that TCU wants nothing to do with Baylor)? probably not, especially if they fear the BCS will crumble and go to a playoff system... why pursue something that might not even be there in 5 years?

Now if the MWC believes that they'll get the BCS autobid that the Big 12 vacates by disbanding as as soon as 2011... they have too much to gain by watching that conference disintegrate. I assure you that the MWC presidents will pursue every avenue to pick up the scraps and claim their territory. Whether the BCS recognizes it or not will be another issue. It is precisely why the MWC invited Boise State to strengthen our claim and why this thread will be such a topic of conversation and speculation if the Big 12 folds.
