Guess who is reporting that Arkansas has been inquiring about joining the Big 12? None other than Chip Brown.

I found this to be especially interesting.

Those sources said Arkansas currently doesn't have the votes among the Big 12 schools to join the league. But those sources said they would need to see how the television money would work if adding a school or two to know if they'd vote for expansion.

This makes sense. The Big 12 had to think survival first, before looking to add more schools. Which is what they accomplished, for now. If they can get the same amount of money, or more, by adding two more teams, then it's possible they'll make such a move. Which I think bodes well for BYU.

The only downfall, is that by all accounts, the Big 12 coaches voted unanimously against a big 12 championship game before any of this went down. It appears that while, the rest of the country is moving in that direction, the Big 12 is saying, " been there, done that, no thank you". However, it's ultimately the dollars that's going to decide the fate of a Big 12 Championship Game, and any further expansion of that league

now this. Texas legislators pushing to add houston to big 12. I think expansion and the big12 are not officially finished and everybody knows it. while the COACHES don't like the championship game, its about money and having it probably means more money. also every other confernce now is having one. it will hurt the league to be the only one without one I think. I see them expanding. Will BYU get in? I have no idea. It makes sense but you never know.

We were almost in a long time ago but were stopped by the texas government. looks like hte government is already trying to stick their nose it in again.

Although annoying, I wouldn't put too much into what a small segment of Texas lawmakers want. Adding another Texas team does absolutely nothing for the league dollars wise, or much else for that matter. Texas, A&M and OU already own the Texas TV markets. If they won't add TCU, then they certainly won't add Houston.

Right, and the Big 12 commish said that they absolutely won't add schools that are already in their 5 state footprint. He also said that they are happy with 10 so who knows.

But you're right it makes zero sense to add schools that are already in Texas. That adds nothing to their footprint. Especially not TCU. They're going to share TV revenue with a school that has a fanbase smaller then a lot of Texas High Schools? I think not.

I think Arkansas would only join the Big XII if they were promised a spot in the South division, where they could play Texas/Texas A&M every year (helping their Texas recruiting). If this was the case, the conference would need one more southern team to bump the two Oklahomas north. That leaves Memphis, Louisville, and New Mexico. BYU wouldn't fit in that scenario.

It's not up to the coaches, so who cares what they vote. Once Sir Jones-A-Lot gets those presidents all in a prayer circle (or a drum circle, which ever), and has a Comin' to Jesus meeting with them...they'll make the smart FINANCIAL move, and the coaches protests over a championship game will be ignored.

Agreed. That's why I finished my thought with this -

how about this proposal. They take Memphis and BYU. The two teams split the Fed-Ex $10 and the revenue fromt the conference championship game. Each team gets about $7-10M and the rest of the conference reaps better tv numbers, attendance with BYU games and two more bball invites. Memphsis is weak in FB but could improve being in the Big12.

The part that I don't like is the second class citizenship and I would expect the revenue split to become more fair down the line.

All in all I see this happening sometime in the future, but not this year. Too much money to be made by adding BYU for them to pass up. Religion and geographics play a small part compared to the money involved and I just see the money side making sense from everything I read.

They just need time to settle down with 10 to where they feel comfortable expanding on what they have again, give em time.

Hey MWC; Pac - 10 just called; apparently religion is NOT a big deal and they want to swap BYU and Utah.

BYU's biggest problem in joining the Big X-II isn't Sunday play (which is a legitimate issue with school Presidents, conference commissioners, Athletic Directors, and TV experts... though not quite as big a deal-breaker as advertised)- it's geography (and not having a solid travel partner).

The closest school in the Big X-II to BYU is Kansas, and they aren't anywhere close to us. That's a worse stretch than a Utah/Colorado rivalry, and those two haven't played for decades! Seriously, what's the all-time BYU-Kansas football series sitting at right now? We can count our all-time games against Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M ("The Big 3") combined on our hands.

While schools like Arkansas, Memphis, Louisville, and Cincinnati aren't much more than 500 miles away from most Big X-II schools, BYU is nearly 1500 miles away.

What this means...

IF the Big X-II survives, and IF they ever expand out past 10, and IF they can't land a big fish like Notre Dame, Arkansas, LSU, Arizona, or Arizona State... they'll take a long, hard look at BYU. But only IF there is another school near BYU that helps off-set the ridiculous travel costs that adding the Cougars would weigh down their conference with.

BYU and Arkansas? A north school and a south school, and a 1335 mile drive according to mapquest.com. Neither school will ever travel even 100 fans to the other for a road game. The "culture" the two locations share is just about "zip".

BYU and Memphis/Louisville/Cincy? Same crazy differential. Not worth it for the Big X-II when they consider their mem's/women's swimming/diving and men's/women's track/cross country teams.

BYU and Air Force/Colorado State? Do you really consider either of those two schools as a "BCS" level institution? Colorado stunk, but CSU is worse. Air Force isn't even a MWC-level institution, IMO. I think they add almost ZERO to both our TV money and our overall athletics. Have they EVER won the MWC in any sport?

BYU and TCU? Again, one north school, one south school. Again, geographically a terrible pair- certainly NOT a travel parter. And besides, the entire South Six will vote "NO!" to this, as Beebe has already made abundantly clear. All TCU (or any other Texas school) would do is dilute both the Big X-II TV money and the recruiting... It doesn't matter that they're better than Baylor in almost every respect.

Sad to say it, but there it is. Sorry guys.

And yet... my hope that we somehow magically join the Big X-II by September of 2012 remains alive, against all reason or logic.....
