Geez fellas so much hate is not good for your heart.

Honestly, does Utah getting a BCS conference invite before BYU really upset you so bad?

I can't wait to watch them try to compete in Softball. The whole conference is ranked. Most of their conference games will be over in the 5th inning due to the mercy rule. Woman's basketball will be a real challenge too. At least the whole conference is not ranked but a good portion of them went to the post-season. What other sports. They have some really good soccer teams. Will the U start up a woman's water polo team so they can compete? Would love to see them start a men's volleyball team.

Honestly, I have no problem with Utah going to the PAC-10, I hope BYU wouldn't have hesitated to accept an offer, just like Utah didn't hesitate. But let's not pretend it was anything other than what it was: an invitation to a school to grab the Utah market that wasn't LDS. It wasn't about football (since Colorado is also coming). It wasn't about football competition (as you said Utah and BYU have been equals - even over the last 20 years). It wasn't about basketball (since Colorado is coming). It wasn't just about grabbing the Utah TV market (BYU would capture the market just as well as Utah if not better). It was about religion, proposition 8 and the lack of "research" done at BYU because of a perceived lack of doctorates being awarded.

Oh yeah, because there was no bad blood at all before they got the invite

It's not Utah. Sure it doesn't help that they picked our rivals over us (and not even considered a package deal) but that's not the sting for me.

It's when BYU was cast aside like a bleeding, leprous frog by an athletic conference made up of tree-hugging gay-marrying, temple-picketing, church bigots still angry because a church spent a MERE $36,000 to represent their views on traditional marriage that has NOTHING to do with an ATHLETIC conference because if the PAC-0 were actually interested in stadium size, athletic tradition, championships, fan following, MONEY, or any other rational, reasonable measure for an ATHLETIC conference, they would have made a DIFFERENT choice, then I say yes, yes it does.

quiet upset.

And I seriously hope all this smack doesn't keep you from coming back because this board SERIOUSLY lacks some well-thought out opposition (except for some people's views on World Cup Soccer without naMing Any Real nameS).

We're not mad at Utah for making the same choice BYU would have made. It's being blatantly and obviously discriminated against with no recourse and no wide-spread recognition behind the Pac-0's Sunday-play research-school smoke-screen of Crap.

But congrats to you. Cheer-io!

Well said. I have nothing against the Utes for accepting and begging to get in, though I would hope if/when BYU gets the opportunity we won't have to give so much. You really are in trouble for the first 3 years with almost no revenue coming in. The thing that gets me is Ute fans thinking that they earned it, and that somehow BYU didn't when all the facts show otherwise. I mean, look at the resume, it isn't very good. But go ahead and pretend that the invite is deserved and brace yourself for the impact that is, mediocrity.

Blue, I have never said anything about Utah deserving it more that BYU. I have said both teams deserve to have AQ status.

And if BYU does get a Big 12 invite good luck thinking they'll get a better deal with the bullies at the top (Texas, Oklahoma, A&M) running that conference (into the ground I fear).

Our argument started when you said BYU could compete better than Utah in a BCS conference. I didn't see any logical basis for that assessment.

The only point I was trying to make is that Utah's numbers over the last 20 years (since Coach Mac) have been as good as BYU's. Their winning percentages are almost indentical (BYU's is slightly better), They've won the MWC the same number of times. Utah has perfomed very well in bowls and they have a better record agains BCS teams. The rivalry is split 10-10. Utah's football program is good. Most objective people agree with that. And whether or not the BCS wins were flukes as you like to say they give Utah credibility. Credibility that only one other non-AQ team has. I haven't heard any unbiased (Dick Harmon doesn't count) national media say Utah's football program is a fluke.

I understand the hatred and passion that goes with all things Utah/BYU. I remember where I was in 1985 when I heard a pathetic UTEP had beaten BYU (UTEP was 1-10 that season and BYU 1 year removed from...well you know). I was so happy I could barely contain myself. Now I'm older and mellowed and recognize all this for what it is. It's not life and death. It's stinkin' sports and it's sure as hell not worth going on blood pressure meds.

This is an argument neither one of us is going to win so you can have your opinion and I'll have mine and I guess time will tell.

I didn't come to this site to incite a riot or pick fights. I thought I could have civil, adult conversations and maybe a little good natured banter without 3rd grade 'my dad can beat up your dad' but maybe that was an unrealistic expectation.

Best wishes-

My dad is 65 and just had rotator cuff surgery so I wouldn't bet on him. I refuse to use your Cougar emoticons but I would've used the lol one.

Why would the U start up men's volleyball? The Pac 10 doesn't even include men's volleyball.

Just like how Nebraska ice hockey is going to be dominated in the Big Ten...

If they did volleyball then they could compete in the same conference as us and get to try to play against all of our top 15 teams.

MTM,

glad to have you on the board. Come back anytime.

You won't find as manyidiotic fans on this board like other Cougar boards. We can debate civilly (most of the time) and now that we're no longer rivals, we need different perspectives to break us out of blue-goggled world sometimes.

I think this is a HUGE point many Ute fans have failed to consider. Utah football may be generating more revenue with this jump, but much of it will be pumped into other non-revenue sports to get those facilities and programs upgraded. The jump will not be a windfall for football only, or even football and hoops. And the Utes needs big upgrades with Men's baseball, women's softball, and other sports. And it is the PAC-10 that bills itself as "The Conference of Champions" because they take those other "Olympic" sports so seriously and win many national titles in those area. Honestly, the 2 sports Utah will not need upgrade immediately or Football and Women's gymnastics. Most of the rest of those sports programs are going to take a ton of revenue to upgrade them. BYU kills Utah when it comes to facilities, so BYU would is more ready to make a jump into any conference when the time comes.

For the record MTM, below is your first post on CC. I don't mind someone coming in here with a differing opinion. I like the discussion and debate. You are the one that turned this into a BYU vs. Utah thing with your FIRST post. If you would like to back down from your earlier stance, then that is fine with me. Thanks for posting, at any rate. It has been my experience that all opposing fans come on a board acting nicey nice, asking a few questions, and then get mean. So go with that, or don't... but just call it like it is. Your initial posts were less inquisitive and more stirring the bees nest, so if you start getting stung you have yourself to blame.

I hear a lot of comments along the lines that Utah will struggle in the PAC and that they will be a middle of the pack team, etc. I also hear a lot of comments that BYU is far superior to the U academically.

1. Do you guys think BYU would compete better than Utah in a BCS conference?

2. What do you base your analysis on that Utah is not up to par academically?

I don’t believe Utah’s invite means they are better than BYU or even more deserving for that matter. But I also don’t believe BYU is any better than Utah either.

I’m not looking for a fight. Just curious.

I know what I said but I don't see how the two threads are related. I was honestly curious to know where BYU fans were coming from in their assessment. I received lots of explanation and examples. Some of it I can see where they're coming from. It doesn't mean I agree with all of it but at the very least I had a better understanding of why BYU fans were feeling the way they were and that was the purpose of the post.

We don't all have to agree but having some decorum and respect would be preferable. I didn't make disparaging remarks to anyone or try to get under anyone's skin. I don't feel like I "turned mean". You seemed to take it more personal than anyone else on this board. Nearly every one of your posts includes some little dig or sarcastic remark or a condescending tone.

I have received PMs of encouragement so I'm not so sure the problem lies entirely with me. No hard feelings from me but maybe we'd be better off just ignoring each other going forward.

Is it not a little ironic to anyone else that Tuberville is speaking of the unbalance of wealth distribution within the Big XII but makes no qualms whatsoever about the unbalance between the AQ and the non-AQ leagues? Talk about hypocrisy. The earnings gap between UT and Tech is much smaller than the earnings gap between Tech and BYU and BYU is arguably a better program than Tech.

I hope Tech chokes on this hire and falls back into irrelevance. There is no way Tuberville is going to be able to take Leach's recruits and play his SEC style of football with them and win. It's going to take years of recruiting his own guys and even then I don't think they'll be able to compete against the likes of the rest of the Big XII South. It was because of Leach's system that they began to be able to approach actually competing with the UTs and OUs despite getting the third or fourth leftovers of the in-state recruits. Nobody wants to live in Lubbock for four years. But at least before those that chose to could tolerate it because of the winning. Good luck with that now Tech.

As for what the thread was actually about, which has nothing to do with Utah, here is Orangebloods' take: http://texas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1099384
