I think the oldest is something like 25. At that point you need to get on with your life.

Also, I just heard USC is giving Bush's Heisman back?!?!?!?

They gave it back today. Same day reports came out that AD garrett, a USC heisman winner, got canned and replaced by Pat Haden, a 2-time NC winner while QB at USC. Apparently, they love their former athletes as AD's.

I'm a big Haden fan. Good QB, rhodes scholar, intelligent broadcaster without being Christensenesque.

I, too, am a Haden fan. The guy has 'gravitas' to clean up the mess at USC. Garrett, as well meaning as he was, was in over his head as AD.

As for picking former athletes as AD, what about Holmoe being BYU's AD? I hope that wasn't a criticism on USC's part as the finger points squarely at BYU for the same action.

If you look at most successful programs, they often select former players/athletes to serve as AD.

There are posts on total blue and rumorboard that he is in for the fall. Nothing concrete yet however. I saw the posts on rumorboard, got really excited to the point where I was fistpumping in my office all alone and then once i looked at their posts realized that there was nothing official supporting them. I hope the rumors have something to back them up!

I don't think Garrett was well meaning. Winning clouded his judgement; he let the cheating slide (as did Carroll) because they didn't actually have a hand in it. Like I said before, Bush (and other players) can't just roll up to school in Hummers and the word not get to coaches and ADs,

When I worked for UMKC, I knew the players grades before they did. I knew if a landlord needed rent or if a utility hadn't been paid. I knew who the players were dating, etc. etc. etc.

Multiply that spotlight by a million and that's what the AD knew every minute about what was going on with the premier players at USC.

Had Reggie and O.J. signed with the agents that gave them the money in the first place, it's possible that the word would have not gotten out (obviously USC, their boosters, and coaches weren't forthcoming) This got out when the guys that gave Reggie and O.J. the money, wanted it paid back, etc. I suppose Mike Garrett had no idea that Reggies relatively poor parents were all of a sudden living the high life in L.A>?

Nothing is free in this world. You take money and favors from someone, they're going to want something in return. Don't return the favors and they'll cut you down at your knees. Until those agents tried to get their money back, this was a pretty well kept secret; aside from the thousands that saw Reggie rolling in a brand new Hummer/Lexus and sporting a $5,000 Rolex. I assure you that Mike Garrett knew about that and that doesn't = good intentions; it = stick your head in the sand and pray no one blows the whistle.

What makes Garrett any better than anyone else illegitimately riding the gravy train? (i.e. Enron execs, etc. etc. etc.)

USC fans let it slide and embraced Garrett because of how bad they were in the 90s. Now we find that everything they accomplished this decade is tainted with cheating and Mike Garrett is the face of it...

USC fans still willing to give Garrett props now, will be hating that same name the next few years as USC struggles to get back respect in the face of major punishment. Those scholarship, recruiting, and practice time limitations will cost them for the next decade and Garrett could have put a stop to that by simply suspending Bush, and not allowing Mayo to come to school there.

USC is now the Barry Bonds/Mark McGwire of college football. (the Floridas and Bamas of the world are so glad they got caught before they did; now it just looks like Florida and Bama are being proactive, when in truth, they're being reactive to USCs punishment)

Garrett was handling this poorly back when he had a chance to save USC from some of this backlash.

And let's be clear, it wasn't just reggie and o.j., joe mcknight had been seen driving $60,000 vehicles, etc. etc. etc.

Ironically both Garrett and Todd McNair (the actual fall guy for all of this in the coaching staff) both have ties to my hometown (Kansas City) but neither have earned much respect in my book.

Here's the entire report and findings on the investigation. Hard to read that and think that Garrett had "good intentions."

This decade for USC has been a fraud. Garrett is the ultimate face of that.

To go back to the original subject of Kaveinga... The kid was sucked into the glitz and glamor, but it was a lie. This is why you don't penalize the kid for getting out a few months sooner than the actual NCAA punishment. You oblige him the same opportunity that the other juniors and seniors to be are getting; they're also paying for the lies and deceipt of the USC coaching staff and administration.

Right now, the NCAA holds no love for USC (add in the fact that Kiffin is still there after thumbing his nose /pissing them off at Tennessee) I don't see how Kaveinga doesn't get allowed to play unless the NCAA decide they want to play hardball with the cleanest program in college sports history; BYU. I think you also need to contrast this stuff with what is happening now at Florida and Alabama. Both those schools have seen NCAA probation, seen how it kills a program for years, and neither want it again. So when Alabama found out a star player had potential contact with an agent, they rolled on the kid and he might sit out next season. And when Florida learned a player from last season no longer with the team might have taken money from an agent before the season ended, they turned themselves in. I give them both credit for it now, because kids might do stupid stuff, but the schools that are smart, turn it in fast, and typically just get hand slapped, which is appropriate. It is when you ignore it, deny knowing about it, and everyone should have known is when you get in trouble. just ask UNC. They are next on the block and I suspect their football program is about to get creamed. just hope it doesn't take 7 years.

While I will agree it is better to blow the whistle on yourself instead of deny it, I still don't agree that Alabama and Florida's decisions to turn it in had anything to do with their high moral standards. If USC hadn't gotten T-boned by the NCAA there isn't a snowballs chance Alabama and Florida says anything at all. I find the timing of the reporting of their infractions happening after the ruling on USC bogus, if they were really a caring and concerned program they wouldn't have waited 7 + months to report it.

Imagine if he didn't make a bone-headed last second decision at commit time in the first place...

There was some discussion in TBS chat last night that Kaveinga has been cleared. The question is whether he wants to play or go on his mission. There was no consensus as to whether his papers had already been turned in, or if he was going to wait until after the season. But there were some who "knew" that he'd been ok'd to play this year.

Just like some "knew" Holmoe was in Dallas? I'll believe when I see it on BYU's website, not TBS
