Defending the 1984 National Championship

Gives 5 reasons that BYU's 1984 national championship should not be disputed.

i don't think it needs to be defended.



That being said that dude's opinion isn't very convincing.



I'd just say 'those were the rules in place in 1984 and we did everything we needed to do to win a National Chamopionship and we did." End of story.

Ask the dude to have him defend every Notre Dame national title. Or every Alabama one. Or every Penn State one. Or every USC one. seriously, it is a stupid exercise. BYU got voted #1 in the UPI Poll, the AP Poll, and those were the ones that decided it for every other national title up to that point, and many years after. So until a playoff, every title under that arrangement should be questioned, right? yeah, dumb.

They can always come look at the trophy.



I cant' wait for UW fans to come to Provo this fall and watch us polish it.

How about Washington turned down the chance to play us to get more money in another bowl.

We won the national championship because we went undefeated and other teams lost.

I think the best defense is that the powers that be needed reminding of how arbitrary and open-ended their system was and that if they didn't get their heads together and great the Great Collusion and exclude 2/3 of legitimately eligible candidates, they might have to cede more championships to the likes of BYU.



And we can't have THAT now can we?

This reminds me of a discussion that I had with a Yewt a little while back. He was trashing our NC with comments about it being 25 years ago and that we beat a "pathetic" Michigan team to win it and so on and so forth. I made some snide remark about Utah throwing a parade for being number 2 and what not. And he said, "Hey it isn't Utah's fault that they didn't play for a national title. We should have! You can't blame us for being in this crappy system."



So I destroyed him by saying "Oh really? Hey it isn't BYU's fault that they played Michigan that year. We should have played a better team. You can't blame us for playing in that crappy system." Then I added. "Bottom line BYU got voted number 1 and Utah got voted number 2."



He was dumbfounded.
