wow, I was really impressed with that highlight reel. obviously, everyone looks good in their own highlights, but he showed just about every skill you want in a RB. Obviously he's got some serious wheels, but he showed patience to let the play develop and to follow your blockers and he was strong enough to run people over between the tackles and break arm tackles. I don't remember seeing him do any pass blocking, but you can teach blocking if he's willing to do it (which he better be if he wants to play for BYU)

I *love* how fast he is through the hole once it develops. In the blink of an eye he goes from running laterally, half speed, to full-speed vertically past the front seven and into the secondary.

Phillips has been cleared. Will be practicing today and him and aj moore before practice will be running the y because he missed that and was really looking forward to winning that race.

Damn the NCAA!

Phillips' brother is a regular on cougarboard. this is all per his comments.

While I respect him for running the Y, why the heck is he doing it this morning before practice? He's not going to have half the time to recover that the other players did since their practice was much later in the day, and you'd think he would want to shine in his first practice. His legs are going to be like lead. Oh well, I hope he at least breaks the record.

Yeah, he looks like a great north-south runner, and you can tell he's a sprinter by how long his strides are for his height. Doesn't really look like he's running that fast, but he pulls away from everybody

Well, they are going to be in full pads and he won't, so I figure that has something to do with it.

Well he won't be able to compete in all of the team activities anyway as per NCAA rules so I don't think that is as much as an issue.

My only issue is that he doesn't transfer the ball to the outside hand. He seems right hand dominant but depending on what arm (usually right) he puts the ball in, it stays there. Something easily addressed and corrected.

But his reel reminds me of Luke Staley. Fast, finds the hole and explodes through it. He also looks like he is always running down hill. C'mon let's get the season started!! I can't wait anymore!!!!

BTW - Send his bro an invite to CC.

Funny, I thought the same thing in regards to staley. If he bulks up a little and maintains his speed he could be really special. I think he will be anyway. He is someone that will be helpful in any number of ways on the team.

I am glad the kid is running the Y. Means he is pumped to participate in a BYU tradition. Means he values what BYU is about, what Bronco tries to do. I love that about the kid right now. I want kids that buy in to BYU and the program, and he clearly has. Plus, he can not do 2 a days right now anyway, so run in the morning, participate however he can in the evening. Perfect.

This is exactly what impresses me about Phillips. He hits a hole going full speed no matter what. He has this extra gear that's faster then everybody else on the field and because of that nobody can react quick enough to tackle him. And we're talking 5A Alabama here where football is king.

The team ran it on Saturday before practice. It's part of their conditioning test before they can practice. There were some who didn't make it on Saturday so had to re-run it on Monday. It's also timed by the coaching staff, so there may be some restrictions on coaching contact before a player is cleared, so the first time the coaching staff could time might been this morning.

I'm thrilled he chose to run the Y. I'm not part of the decision process, but supposing it was not mandated by the coaches, it makes for a great story that all the players can tell each other about the "new guy".

Yeah, He cares enough about this team to run it on his own time and hit stuff with the sledgehammer and flip the tires and do all the right things. Those kinds of stories are important when you're a few days late.
