Tommy's is good they make great hot dogs. Down in that neck of the woods I love Sammy's on 100 West and, I dunno, 25ish North. It's just around the corner from Center Street. It's a dive as well. They have decent food but it's the pie shakes that I go there for. They take a whole piece of pie and blend it into a shake. Banana Cream pie shake is the greatest thing ever invented. If you haven't been you gotta go for the pie shake.

I used to live down that way and my wife would get Sammy's and I would get Tommy's (the secret is that they use carrots in their chili). Both are awesome, Sammy's definitely has a fun little downtown atmosphere that I haven't seen anywhere else.

5 guy's is great, but too expensive. RedRobin does a great job too. In-n-Out better value than either.

But give me a Pastrami Burger from Astrp/Crown and now you are talking.

Throw in some bacon and you have a Celestial feast (cholestrol being a non-issue).

My top 5 fast food burgers:

1. five guys- the most complete burger. although I think I had a heart attack on the way to my car the last time I ate there. I try not to eat there too regularly because I don't want to die young, but it is a favorite guilty pleasure of mine.

2. fat burger- another heart attack burger, but very good, especially with the egg added.

3. in-N-out- simple, delicious and cheap

4. wendy's - great classic taste, but I had to dock points for the strange square hamburger patty.

5. smashburger- I discovered it in colorado and have grown to really like it.

Thought I'd dredge up this old thread after trying a new place in PG/AF (its right on the border there).

Went to State Street Grill just south of the Hospital in AF. The place is done up like an old gas station, complete with pumps and old tin signs (but has a couple flat screen TV's to catch the game on). Its a little mom n' pop shop and the restaurant is pretty small (capacity of 21).The menu is pretty small: Burger, Double burger, Hot dog, Sliders, Fries, Onion rings, Drinks. (and there's a kids' section, and I might have forgotten a thing or two). The price seems a little high, but the burger is a LARGE 1/3 lb.

The burger comes standard with a thick slice of tomato, two big slices of pickle, and crisp iceburg lettuce and you can get optional cheese, bacon, grilled onions, mushrooms, and sour kraut (can't stress enough how fresh everything is). The patty is thick, cooked well, tastes great, and isn't overly greasy (and I'm told that its also fresh, not frozen). The bun looks like its baked in house or at a local bakery. The serving of fries is also VERY generous and they are fresh made (reminiscent of 5 guys fries).

The owner and cook, Greg, is a super nice, humble guy and you can tell he really takes pride in making a fresh, quality product. I told him how much I enjoyed the burger and he chatted me up for a little bit and gave me a coupon for the next time I come back.

Definitely give this place a visit, great burger, good atmosphere, and nice people (and if for nothing else than to support a new local business run by a good guy making food the way it should be made).

PS-If you're nervous about spending five bucks on a burger you might not like, they have sliders for a buck and they come with a free drink, can't beat that.

I took my 2 boys to 5 guys last week and thought of this thread. The three of us ate for 24 Bucks. Yes - 3 people 24 bucks.

Burger was good. I love thath they have topping options, but when all was said and done, I couldn't get past the fact that I like the tase of In-N-Out a bit more, and could have eaten there twice for what I spent at the cinco hombres....

So after hearing many rave reviews of Smash Burger I Wife of Hawkwing there over the weekend. Have to say I thought it was merely adequate. Don't get me wrong, the burger was good. The toppings were fresh, the burger was meaty and tasted good, but it was really greasy, and there was nothing great about it. I felt like I could have made the exact same burger at home.

When we saw how expensive the fries were I thought for sure they must give you so many that you have to share (like 5 Guys), but they are actually a disappointingly small amount (at least until I tasted them). Also, the Smash Fries flavoring left something to be desired for me. The fry-sauce had a very strange and over powering taste to it that I didn't care for either.

My final two thoughts:

The shakes were amazing. The guy working the register was a total douche bag and would only respond in sarcastic jabs and remarks. I wanted to tell him, 'Dude, shut up. You're like 40 years old and work at Smash Burger.' but I didn't.

In the end, spending over $20 for 2 burgers and fries at Smash Burger is not likely something we'll do again.

If you're going to spend $$ on a burger, you might as well come to Denver and do it right:

The burgers are the best chic-burgers I have ever tasted, the fries are out of this world, and you finish your meal with a liquid nitrogen chilled milkshake.

A little off the beating path, but if you're ever out of town and find yourself in Honolulu/Waikiki, I always stop at this place for a burger: http://www.burgersontheedge.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Choose type of bun, type of meat, type of special sauce and whatever toppings and condiments. Sweet potato fries aren't bad either.

Whenever I hear something I look at the source, if it's MSNBC then I know it's crap, so this list is crap (even though I do like Five Guys). The Carl's Junior Six Dollar Burger blows anything from Wendy's, McDonald's, Burger King, etc. right out of the water.

It was simply reporting on a zagat survey. it was not msnbc who did the survey.

I think you missed the point of his comment.

It's all about Carl's Jr. The lack of comments on Carl's 6-dollar burger quality, size and taste on this thread is a burger atrocity.

5 guys - If you can get over the fact that you're pulling fries from a paper bag that is COVERED in the largest nasty grease stains I've ever seen from their VERY greasy fries, then 5 guys is an expensive fad. I'm with Spiff on this one. Not super-impressed.

in-N-out I get that the fries are an acquired no sat-fat taste but that doesn't mean they're any good. Ok, I said it. THEY"RE GROSS. Burgers are okay, but I think people go because they get to say "animal style" in public like it's a non dirty word.

Burger King > Wendys > McDonalds but not by all that much - you only go if you can't find a taco bell or are literally Ethiopian-level starving, or you want to convince a first date never to go out with you again.

Crown, Astro, Smash, I've never tried. I've already found my nirvana

Is it time to talk about the 6 dollar burger again? Good. It's enormous, ingredients are fresh, it comes in multiple varieties (try getting a Big Mac or a Whopper with Mushrooms and/or chili! (if that sounds gross, I'd recommend trying it before knocking it!)), it costs less than a 5 buck pizza and their normal-size free-refill drinks are enormous.

You take a first date to Carl's and your woman will KNOW it's real. After she wipes her mouth of juicy amazing-ness she'll be all over you with her new-found and plentiful Carls Jr. energy source. Thank me later gentlemen. Thank me later.

Because you want my opinion ...

1. Ruby's (it's in California ... I LOVE their bacon cheeseburger! and their chili fries are awesome ... they use shredded beef in the chili!)

2. Coney's

3. Carl's Jr.

4. Red Robin

5. In-N-Out

Five Guys is okay, nothing special. Same with Smash Burger ... although I think I liked Smash Burger more than Hawkwing did.

I'm not sure how I missed this thread in it's original posting but I've got to add my opinion:

First, if any of you are heading to Yellowstone via Ashton this year, stop by Big Judds and enjoy truly the best of all burgers!

Second, there is a great hambruger restaurant in Bountiful on 500 So. called Salt City Burger. They have a number of excellent burgers but the bacon burger is incredible! They mix real bacon pieces into the beef before cooking and...WOW it's good! They also use what seems like homemade buns that are awesome. So, yeah, I know these two places are not chains and many cannot enjoy them if you live far away. But they are both exceptional and if you are in the area you are crazy not to stop in!

Go Cougs!!!

I worked at coneys for 6 months. Its EASILY the best burger in town. Nothing really competes with it... and lets get real, in and out, the plus is its cheap, the bad thing is it tastes like it. The cafeteria at my work has better burgers than them... If you havent been to coney's try it. Get a Sanoran burger... its not on the board, but they'll know what you're talking about. Its pinto beans, grilled onions, pico de gallo, melted cheese with guac.... AMAZING.

I find in n out to be cheap as well. I'd much rather have me some 5 guys. And if I'm lookin for a cheap, good burger, I'm going to the BYU creamery for a kids meal. Good to very good burger, spicy fries, a decent sized ice cream, and a drink for UNDER 3 BUCKS!

On my way from work to school today, I stopped in at Scaddy's in Lehi (owned by Raiderfan's dad from the old board). Got a Scaddy burger with Bacon, which comes with all the classic fixin's and "Scaddy sauce" which is like a fry sauce with some pepper and spices. They also have a whole bar with fresh ingredients that you can add: peppers, sauces including ranch and bleu cheese, and so on (I added some jalapenos to mine). The fries were real potato good, the burger was decent, but I was a little disappointed by the thinness of the patty itself. Overall it was good, but at $9, I'll probably go down the road to Coney's or St. Street Grill in Am. Fork or Chubby's in PG.

I've been wanting to try Scaddy's so thanks to the report. I always felt bad that raiderfan(?) never made it over here.
