Just when you thought all the crazy conference shakeups were over...

His tone almost seems like he knows something is up and the shiite (as opposed to suni) muslims are about to hit the fan...Like his school was informed by the MWC so they could have a heads up or something.

If this happens it is about money - just like the other moves that happened or almost happened in conference realignment this summer. This move would shed BYU of the burden it has to share tv money with a bunch of schools who do not add much to the tv pot.

BYU is not Notre Dame and scheduling would be an issue - just like today. They will likely be able to get WAC, MWC, Conf USA, etc. teams to schedule them and we may see a lot of Army, Navy, and Air Force. Most BCS schools will continue to dodge us or only offer 2 fer 1s or 1 fer nones for the same reason it happens today. They do not want to take any chance of losing to anybody. Other than some PAC 10 schools, they are dummying down - not up on their OOC schedules. Maybe we can occasionally get a neutral field game like Oklahoma in Dallas if you want to call that neutral.

Keep in mind that UW backed out of two games with us recently. Nevada backed out two years ago. We had a difficult time getting anybody to fill in. Hawaii would still likely want to play BYU - but expect us to go there quite often. Maybe we would go back to playing an extra game each year to do that. UH is losing BSU who is their new arch rival.

But I don't think we would be any worse off on our scheduling and we would get to keep a lot more money. Maybe we would be able to get more games in Provo by only giving 2 fer ones or 1 fer nones. Maybe we wouldn't have to lose to BSU and TCU annually. Maybe this would be as smart or smarter than moving back into the WAC to dominate it and go BCS Bowling annually. The way the beauty contest works - BYU needs to put together a schedule it can run the table with almost every year. Ask UH, BSU, and to a lesser extent, Utah and TCU how to get a BCS Bowl. Utah and TCU took a slightly tougher road but got to the same place.

But that is all OK - BYU can't afford to lose 1 game if it has any BCS hopes in any given year.

And who knows - maybe some anti-trust attorney has advised BYU that the BCS would have a more difficult time excluding an independent ranked #8 or higher since it does that favor for Notre Dame. Maybe that is a cleaner way into the BCS cuz then the BCS doesn't have to let the entire MWC into the club. It let Utah in. It could take BYU the same way.

Maybe TCU could try to go this route too - but they don't have any fans and supposedly do not need money due to sitting on top of an oil field or something like that.

This whole thing may or may not be true - and may or may not be a good idea - but, hey, the country was in the mood for change when they elected Obama and this would be a change for those who are bored with the MWC. And it would likely shed the MTN. Or it could be posturing to get the MTN or the MWC to change the TV deal and revenue sharing arrangements. Where there is this much smoke - there may be a fire.

I guess CSU didn't read the fine print on the memo that said "Shut the *$#% up about it until BYU announces it."

My company recently launched the first on-line access to physicians in the world in a partnership with Microsoft and a start-up company called American Well. Microsoft insisted on absolute secrecy until the press release. The way that was acheived was to tell almost absolutely nobody about it in any of the three organizations and no one outside those organizatoins until it was ready to go. It seems, if this is all true, too many people were told about this in advance. Hey - maybe it is just a trial balloon to see how we all react.

Well.. my two bits are this. I spoke to the guy that is over post-production video for sports on BYUTV. He was talking about how he potentially might have a lot more on his hands in the future, he could just be referring to the broadcast building or what not... but he said he could potentially need to hire some more sports-video editors. Not much info but its the first inside bit I have had to share...

Seriously WHO IS DOING ALL OF THIS BYU HACKING?!?!?!?!

You really think their twitter account was hacked? Sounds like some cya and cyt to me. And this from the skeptic. I think they meant every word until they got an angry phone call from BYU. Either way, I'm going to bed hoping I still have a football team to cheer for in the morning.

BTW, BYU football is holding a press conference in Salt Lake City on Thursday.

The topic? A coaching kids with cancer program.

!. If true, ESPN would love to deal with BYU without the baggage of the rest of the MWC = more money for us and more ability to do our own thing at the same time; BYU broadcasting could be an all star and cash cow and right now ESPN is bigger than their parent company ABC; it would be a nice partnership til the Big 12 comes a calling.

2. BYU would still be able to negotiate with the Big 12; and we make news, putting ourselves right at the top of their list and tip of their tounge. They'll come to their senses soon when they find out they want a championship game in football.

3. In basketball, we shed the awful Vegas invitational; Salt Lake becomes a viable option for the WAC championships

4. In football we shed the Vegas bowl and become a free agent in terms of bowl exploration; that would be fun..

5. The Mountain network will absolutely collapse now

6. We will still play Utah every year now, we need them for scheduling and SOS; we cannot go independent without having them to play

7. We will still play Utah State every year, another school that wants us on their schedule

8. The WAC has an interest in seeing the MWC fail; they will help us schedule for football until we can go elsewhere. Hawaii, Fresno State, Nevada, etc. will give us home and aways for the purposes of seeing the MWC take a nosedive.

Bad side? This year the MWC refs will have zero interest in making sure we get fair calls.

The bottom line with scheduling is money. With the Mountain West conference we are limited in the amount of money we can generate if we bring the larger BCS schools to Provo. We get the same amount per game (from Television) whether we bring Oklahoma to Provo or Idaho State. If we are independent, with our own TV network, we generate more money if we bring the Big Boys to Provo than we would with the lesser schools. With more money coming in, there is more money to bring the larger schools. The two largest reasons we have a hard time attracting the larger schools are MONEY and Exposure. As an independent, we solve both of those problems. We can have a BCS worthy schedule, market the games on an individual basis and avoid profit sharing with an entire conference.

Sorry I'm not going back through the whole thread to find the questions but someone asked about staying in the MWC for all other sports lest we take a backwards step with b-ball, etc. My understanding is that it would have everything to do with TV yet again. In other words, IF BYU goes independent it is to provide the program with more programing flexibility. Were they to stay in the MWC they would still be tied to the MTN in the other sports. Why would they want this?

Secondly, there have been some saying this type of a move is purely about money. Sure, there will be more money to be made but IMO this is about the mission of the University and the Church in trying to get BYU and the Church on as many TV sets, not just nationwide, but worldwide, as they can. When was the last time you watched a BYU game, even on the MTN with pathetic TC and didn't hear something about BYU's missionary program or didn't see a shot of the Provo Temple? The Church is doing a TON to gain positive publicity. Bronco is doing an AWESOME job of making that happen at BYU with his high class recruits and the vision he has for the program.

If these rumors hold water then this will be huge for BYU and the Church gaining more publicity than they currently have.

Go Cougs!!!

I keep saying that none of this could possibly be true (the timetable). But it's getting harder and harder to fight it.

First and foremost, I just think it's ridiculous to have any kind of knee-jerk reaction to the Pukes-to-Pac10 deal. Indy might very well be a viable option and if any team other than ND or the service academies could do it, I believe BYU could. I just don't know that we'd be much better off as independents than in the MWC. But the bottom line is at least wait until this next season is over to see if the conference has a shot at AQ-inclusion. I really think we stand a good chance at it. And as bad as the bottom half of the MWC competition is in football, at least there is some competition in the other sports, unlike the WAC.

finally someone who agrees with me. I hate the idea of independence. I don't think it will help us. i hoipe they are not doing it simply because they feel like they have to. it better really be better for us and definitely so. better bowl tie ins and better tv coverage as well as more money. without all those i say don't do it. i am not happy this morning.
J
jonnylingo
Independence is a bad idea. hate it. hate it. hate it. lets not forget hte mwc pretty much had a de facto auto bid. you beat tcu and bsu and your in, even if you have one loss i think. it was always either bsu or the mwc champion. now that bsu is in mwc it alaways going to be the mwc.

if we are going to go indy they better have some great bowl tie ins already in place. they should make a notre dame game a yearly thing as well towards the end of the year. it makes cheduling easy for both schools and it gives us exposure to help us in the polls at the end of the year. not sure if they would be interested but i would seriously be pushing for that if i were byu and we were going indy.

i still haven't seen any credible source saying this is going to happen. if it really is they better have already done the hard work and negotiations with bowls, the bcs, espn, etc.

hopefully they are taking a playbook from texas and leaking this crap top get leverage with the conference to let them do what they want, namely get their own tv deal going.
