I sure hope that the BYU administration knows what they are doing. I hope this isn't a knee jerk reaction to utah leaving for the PAC. I will always be a fan of BYU and root for them no matter what but I can see the church eliminating sports at BYU if independance becomes a money losing venture for the school.

I already addressed this earlier in this thread but I will repost it for you:

If the rumors are true there is no way that this is a knee jerk reaction. We know how conservative and careful BYU and the Church are with these things. BYU would have to have BCS agreements, schedules set, TV contracts worked out, etc before they would ever declare independence. You don't just wake up one morning and say Hey lets go independent today!! You cannot hammer all of those things out in the short time it has been since Utah left.

If BYU is going independent then it means that BYU has been working behind the scenes for YEARS getting it all set up and ready if the opportunity so presented itself.

These are both good points BUT its all speculation at this point. Unless some has a "source". But then... What's a "source"? Cause rumor board butchered that word and its creeping over here.

SLCTrib is jumping the gun with their "It's official" story. A source in the WAC can't necessarily be trusted. Remember how much the WAC would love to make life painful for the MWC, even if it's just to cause a stir. Until BYU says something about it, it's not official.

And anyone who says the SLTrib wouldn't write an article without something substantial backing it up has never really read any of their stories.

Other then it would destroy thier reputation as a legit news source to go "official" on a story this big without them being pretty sure about it.

From Cougar Tracks, I trust Wrubell more then anybody:

I have personally examined communication from someone close to the BYU Athletics program who said BYU's football independence and future affiliation/coordination with ESPN are a "done deal." A source told me it was no coincidence that ESPN has been out in front of this story, citing early multiple sources online and even placing the story ahead of Brett Favre's impending return this morning on SportsCenter.

You're kidding, right? Have you read the news lately?
