I don't want to jump the gun here, but unless BYU announces they are going independent in the next 5 hours I can lay a big fat I told you so all across the forum. ;) :munch:

You didn't miss anything, Hawkwing set the end time of his guarantee short of the MWC withdrawl notice deadline. Smart move too, because he'd have taken a bath over that huge loss of revenue in free memberships!

I did this because last week some other clown was giving out free memberships to his website if BYU didn't declare independence by today. I thought it was silly to not give it to the Sept. 1st deadline so I made my own prediction that ended early.

I understand the potential large benefit from a $$$$$$ standpoint of going independent. I'd like to hear from a few folks on here an explanation of what the football benefit would really be. Thanks.

Money is a huge part of it. More money = better facilities = more impressive to potential recruits.

Exposure: Better exposure = better name recognition = more impressive to potential recruits.

Exposure: Better exposure = better name recognition = higher rankings = better bowls.

Those are the reasons I can see that are directly football related.

BYU's biggest beef with the MWC/ the MTN is the exposure aspect of it. BYU has the largest MWC fanbase by far and the MTN is not providing sufficient exposure to satisfy BYU's entire fanbase. And now that BYU has the broadcast facilities to satisfy that fanbase it makes being stuck on the MTN that much more frustrating.

There are many other threads that address this topic as well. :)

So, hypothetically speaking, if the Mountain West & the mtn. were willing to give BYU the broadcasting rights to all of it's home football games, what would be the football benefit of going independent in football with all other sports being MWC versus just being in the MWC for all sports?

If the TV deal was different this would not be happening. But the TV deal is not going to change that dramatically. So we have to choose what we want TV exposure or the MWC?

Well if the MWC gave full broadcast rights to all of its home games then going fully independent in football is not as appealing. That's the question that I think BYU and the MWC are discussing right now. Will the MWC give BYU it's TV independence? If the answer is No then BYU football goes independent and the question changes to Will the MWC allow BYU's other sports to remain in the MWC while it's football is independent?

If that answer is No then the question changes to Where will the other sports land? West Coast Conference? WAC?

Last week BYU was within a hairs length from going independent in football and having all the other sports join the WAC which tells me that the MWC was not willing to allow BYU its own broadcasting rights. If it weren't for some last second deals between the MWC and Nevada and Fresno then BYU would have already declared independence.

Another benefit of independence--If we are invited to another conference (Big 12-2) we wouldn't have to give notice to a conference. The Big 12-2 doesn't want to add mebers right now; but if that changes and we were invited, we wouldn't have to wait a year or two to join.

"Letting BYU’s other sports stay in the Mountain West while football competes as an independent isn’t an option. The league’s constitution bylaws state that every conference member has to compete in four core sports: football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball."

Anytime someone quotes that, they fail to understand that Bylaws can be amended. In fact, the Bylaws outline what it takes to amend them. Bylaws are not some concrete hindrance, just bargained for guidelines. And the bargain can be amended. I do it all the time for clients.

I understand this completely. But that being said if they want BYU bad enough then I am sure they would be happy to change the bylaws.

Those bylaws state this regarding changing rules:
1.3.6.8 Changes to Conference Rules. Amended or newly adopted Conference rules shall remain in place for a minimum of two years. If new information becomes available or changes to NCAA rules impact the original determination on the issue, the rule could be changed prior to the two-year time period. (Adopted April 2007)

So it really doesn't seem like that big of a deal to change the rules.

I don't think this article sheds any new light on this topic at all. In fact, the author gives no new evidence that BYU will stay in the MWC. Even her facts about BYU's circumstances are not very insightful.

Darn, it took them 2 weeks to announce, so I guess that means that I won't be getting free CougarCorner memberships for the next 5 years.
