"WCC commissioner Jamie Zaninovich told ESPN.com early Wednesday the league would be interested in pursuing BYU for all sports except football. Zaninovich said BYU would fit well with the other church-based institutions in the eight-team league. Zaninovich told ESPN.com he reached out to BYU but hasn't heard back."

"Another interesting day in college athletics! Get this is FB driven, but we want to be proactive if the right opportunities open up for us."

The WCC:

8 Teams

Gonzaga

St. Mary's

Santa Clara

San Diego

Portland

San Francisco

Loyola Marymount

Pepperdine

Current TV/Recruiting Markets: L.A., San Francisco, San Diego, Portland, Spokane.

Gonzaga's best men's basketball RPI over the past 5 years: 7. Average: 38.

BYU's best men's basketball RPI over the past 5 years: 10. Average: 44.

St. Mary's made it to the Sweet Sixteen last year.

Even LMU beat Notre Dame last year.

Baseball: San Diego's average RPI over the past 5 years: 10. BYU's average RPI over the past 5 years: 91.

BYU's average over this time frame would be 7th in the WCC.

Women's Soccer: Portland and Santa Clara have won national championships. 3 other teams are commonly ranked.

Volleyball: The WCC is a typical top 5 conference (better than the MWC, and much better than the WAC), with 4 teams that are usually in the tournament.

The MWC has been around 12 years now. The WCC? 58.

WCC Basketball is covered by ESPN. 24 games are being televised nationally this season (such as Xavier @ Gonzaga, St. John's @ St. Mary's, Oklahoma State @ Gonzaga, Kentucky-Portland, Memphis-Gonzaga, Florida State @ Loyola Marymount, and Illinois-Gonzaga). http://www.wccsports.com/m/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/081710aab.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The WCC has considered expanding in the past by adding Denver, Pacific, or Seattle.

They don't offer swimming and diving, softball, or track and field. BYU has been independent in women's gymnastics for a long time now. Portland has been very successful as a track & field indy (Top 10). St. Mary's plays softball in the PCSC. BYU currently plays men's volleyball in a different conference than the MWC.

I liked these guys better than the crap-WAC before Nevada and Fresno State left.

I agree. I think this is a great fit for BYU. It's a great conference that doesn't play football. The only issue is of course football scheduling becomes much harder without the help form the WAC.

At this point the WAC is dead. Who would move to it? It's hard to jump UP to the WAC.

So either BYU changes direction and stays with the MWC for the time being or they join the WCC.

Name me a current WAC or MWC team that would refuse a home-and-home with an independent BYU.

Exactly, and just because the WAC may stay defunct doesn't mean that the six remaining schools will just drop football and they'd all still jump at the chance to play a home n home with us.

I do see Idaho, Utah State, and NMSU dropping back to I-AA after failing a shot at indy.

True, I am sure it's still doable, it just becomes much more work to figure out. There would be no help from the WAC so each game or series would have to be negotiated individually.

Overall I still like it.

Reportedly, Utah State, Hawaii, Fresno State, and Nevada were willing to sign long-term deals. I don't think yesterday would change any of that.

TCU will absolutely refuse. So will USU. I think the other soon-to-be FCS football teams (UNLV, Wyoming, and all the dregs in the WAC) would all refuse to as well. Unless they need us to survive.

Why would UNLV or Wyoming go FCS? The MWC is more stable now than ever.

Fact is, BYU still sells tickets and strengthens SOS. USU needs us to help them stay I-A. TCU needs Top 25 opponents.

Back to the topic of the WCC. From a BYU fan geographic prospective, the WCC seems almost perfect. It has 8 schools in all the right places: San Diego, LA, San Francisco, Portland (remember how BYU fans outnumbered Portland fans 3 to 1 at the BB game there several years ago - it was amazing to hear the spontaneous B-Y-U-Cougars chant - the Pilot fans thought it was prearranged somehow) and Washington. While it does not include all the sports BYU needs, it is better than the MWC or the WAC in those it does have (the highs are just as high if not higher and the lows are not so low), there are other possible affiliations already in place for some of the other sports and we can go indy in T&F, etc. Good for the fans, good for BYU and LDS exposure, good for BB and the involved non-revenue sports.

If you ask their fans, ALL of them. (go check out mwcboard.com - pretty funny stuff going on over there, but make sure you have thick skin, cuz you're going to need it!)

Luckily, MOST ADs are smarter than that.

Those same angry fans would buy tickets to yell at BYU in person. Good for business, and the ADs know it.

I agree. What's funny is they'd actually sell MORE tickets to BYU games if BYU goes indy...even though their fan bases would be crying NOT to schedule BYU cuz they're mad little beeotches.

I'd love BYU to add Hawaii back on the roster. Especially love it when we play there so we could add a 7th home game. Love it even more if it meant an 8th home game, with 5 away.

I agree. If this Indy move happens, I think you'll see BYU playing at Hawaii the 1st Sat in December every year...just like the good old days in the old WAC.

BYU should make a standing offer they they will schedule a 4-year home-home series with any MWC or WAC team up to a limit of 6 per year on a first-come-first-served basis. There will be takers because the ADs all know the bottom line.
