Could the I-AA schools make a push and add a couple sports by the necessary join date (2 years)?

If the school and the boosters had enough interest and money they could. It only takes one year to start up a sport.

Or, they could tell the NCAA: 'It's 2010. We want to join the WAC in 2012. We promise to have 16 sports by 2014. Deal or No Deal?' After the whole I-AA to I-A moratorium for the last few years, perhaps the NCAA would be willing to play nice to help the WAC survive. Maybe even ESPN helps back this all financially, since that seems to be the easy answer deJour lately.

Speaking of which, the WCC has men's soccer, while the MWC does not. Perhaps if BYU left the MWC and joined the West Coast Conference, we would start up a true NCAA men's soccer team again... to go along with a new Women's Rowing program (another sport the WCC carries).....

I think the men's soccer teams enjoys playing in the PDL. I heard on the radio that while the WCC doesn't have all the sports BYU does, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation has all but one of the ones the WCC doesn't. That's the federation the volleyball team used to play in until they broke rules and are going to be punished. I think the volleyball team is now in repeat offender status.

I don't know about you, but I would not mind the idea of playing home and home with Notre Dame every year in November, perhaps with a side of Army and Navy (with their national followings and East coast bias).

"Even at Notre Dame, which would seemingly have a long list of suitors willing to play the Fighting Irish, scheduling is no picnic, said Notre Dame Senior Associate Athletic Director John Heisler. He said he meets with a colleague every week to work on it. 'We have to find 12 games a year while other schools are just looking for three or four [nonconference] opponents,' he said. 'We have to put more time and attention into it. … We don’t even try to have just one person do it. That would be pretty hard. It’s not a drawback, not a negative. It’s just a time thing. It takes a lot of time.' Heisler said if BYU does indeed go independent, there is “a possibility” that the Irish would play the Cougars every year, most likely in November. 'If nothing else, they would have the same flexibility that we would late in the season, while most teams are playing their conference games,' he said, while declining to address BYU’s situation specifically, or give an opinion on its viability." http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/cougars/50146842-88/byu-state-conference-football.html.csp?page=1

I'd be on board as long as it wasn't a long string of 2-for-1s. Otherwise, I'd say take the one-a-decade approach we've taken with Notre Dame.
