You're right, I should ante up and write them a check right now, regardless of the decisions they make. That's pure genius.
I want to hear what concessions you are talking about. Are you talking broadcast rights for BYU football? Football and basketball? A larger piece of the pie?
Me agreeing or disagreeing with you depends on this answer. :D
Now we're talking. What will the MWC put on the table? If the answer is a paltry nothing or a token pissant concession, then I understand it's peace out.
If the answer is even half of what BYU is asking for in a form of broadcasting freedom, then you have to take it before Sept 1.
Negotiations don't start out in the middle, that's where they end up. If you think BYU expects to get everything theyr'e asking for right now, you'd be wrong.
The issue is if the MWC presidents try to play hardball and treat us like we're nothing more than another house on the block and believe that we dont' deserve any concessions; then i think independence (in spite of the lack of a soft landing) is inevitable.
If the MWC can layout and document a viable and healthy broadcasting concession and BYU still decides to go independent, then I have to think we're making a huge mistake.
My faith is that Tom Holmoe and company are very aware of what it will take to stay with the MWC.
My statement that I'd be through with financially supporting the athletic department is based on the fact that people aren't perfect and there's always the chance that BYU makes a terrible decision. In that context, it isn't about anger or pride that I would stop writing checks; it would be simply due to a bad deal that I couldn't support. Boosters vote with their wallets; I don't see voting for a terrible decision. If you want to call me a bad fan for that, then fine, but my feeling is that those that do dont' grasp the concept and somehow believe that everything that BYU athletics does, is done by divine inspiration.... (let's ask Gary Crowton about that one)
