If we need to start another thread with Season predictions feel free to do so. Currently this thread should be focused on the QB battle with the Day 14 stats. Let's reign it in and get back on topic.

Thanks

Kiwi is right. I split the topics, you can continue talking about season predictions in the Season Predictions thread. This thread should focus on the QB performance on day 14.

If Harvey was still in the backfield, you could afford to maybe start Jake, but with no run game to help keep defenses honest, how can you start a true freshman who is immobile? Riley will get the nod as the starter at least through the first 3 games (IMO). The Cougs are gonna need his scrambling ability, especially against the Huskies and 'Noles, although, it won't matter who starts against FSU... that one is gonna be ugly from start to finish and it probably won't be hard for the Seminoles to match last year's 54 point outting in Provo, whereas BYU will be lucky to get to 20 in that one. And, they won't be able to keep up with Washington on the scoreboard either.

BYU's run game did pretty well last season against Oklahoma without Harvey. I'm willing to guess Oklahoma's defense was better than what we'll face against UW.

BYU's offense is really a concern for me. I know we have good talent, just not sure that the game experience is there and may bite us in the first game or so. I had hoped that someone would take command of the offense at QB and the coaches could then start preparing a starter but that hasn't happened. I think our defense will be fine but I am concerned that our offense is going to take about half the season to get its legs and we will have lost a few games by then. Hopefully that won't happen.

While I am concerned with our running game, I think JJ can bring a dimension that we've not had in many years at the RB position. The ability to make guys miss and the ability to break one. Harvey was anything but explosive. JJ can flat out make guys miss. I like our OL to be able to create lanes for JJ to get to and through. I'm confident we can find a running game.

I agree that OU's DL should be better than anything we'll see against UW. While we only had 28 yards rushing, (47 if add back the sacks), the key was we stuck with the rushing game and didn't abandon it. I don't care how many yards we get against UW, I'm more concerned with the number of carries. Under Bronco, we're 35-3 when we rush 33 or more times. If we use the OU number of 28 carries, we're 46-8.

Our numbers against UW, on the road: 29 carries, 137 yards and 1 TD. If you look at the Matt Reynolds era our rushing stats against PAC-10 opponents: 36 rushes, 146 yards, 4 ypc, Oh and the average score: 44-16 with 435 yard of offense with 13 TDs and just 2 INTs against those same PAC-10 foes.
