According to Jay Drew's blog, Option 3 isn't an option. That's why I picked the Independent TV Deal option.

* Not sure if this is from Thompson or Schwab, but the idea that BYU could go independent in football and keep its other sports in the MWC is not an option. MWC bylaws state that football is one of four "core" sports that league members must participate in.

This is the biggest reason BYU made the deal with the WAC because it didn't have an option of staying in the MWC without football. I think BYU now stays with some sort of TV concession and gets Utah St to join.

And with a vote that could be ammended.

Here is why I think that Notre Dame and BYU to the Big 12 is feasible, not likely, but feasible. This is why I included it into the poll.

What is the Big 12 looking for? They are looking for more money with their TV deal and a conference championship game. How is this possible? You invite 2 more teams and you have to split the money 2 more ways right? Yes.

Unless...those 2 teams don't take a piece of the pie.

What is Notre Dame looking for? Notre Dame could be coming to the realization that the landscape of college football is changing. They aren't the Notre Dame of old anymore. Joining a conference is looking nicer and nicer because scheduling and the complexities of independence are beginning to drag. But they also want to keep their TV contract with NBC.

What is BYU looking for? Exposure. BYU is a BCS type program in a mid-major conference.

Solution. Big 12 invites BYU and Notre Dame. Notre Dame gains a conference and keeps their Independent TV contract. BYU becomes a BCS team and creates an independent TV contract with ESPN/BYU Athletic Television. Big 12 gains a conference championship game and still only splits the TV pie 10 ways.

Big 12 and Texas also gain the help and insight of BYU in creating their own networks.

Everybody is happy!

Note: This plan all hinges on Notre Dame. Do I think it is likely? No.

But I do think it is the perfect solution to everything.

But it won't be ND. My money is on Arkansas. Especially if the TV money is there upfront. But also consider that an easier schedule=more wins=happier Alums=more mula. BYU would be the toughest game and about the only team standing between them and the B-12 champ game every year. Add to that the fact that the Big 12 really wants them. Makes for a nice "catbird" seat for Arkansas.

I totally agree that it's a long shot and Arkansas is way more likely to join the Big 12 then Notre Dame is. All I was saying with my post is that adding Notre Dame and BYU seems to solve everyones problems. It seems like the perfect solution to me. That being said, it all hinges on Notre Dame and that isn't very likely at all.

But I think the results of this poll only prove one thing...Nobody has any idea what is going to happen.

Just wanted to see what everybody would choose now. There is a lot more information that has come out recently and I'd like to see if it has swayed anybody.

I can't believe so many of you choose BYU will remain in the Mtn. West and get an independent TV deal... Talk about naive. For that to happen comcast and CBS would have to sign off on it. Why would they give up their biggest piece of the Mtn. West puzzle (BYU in football) for absolutely nothing? I mean it's common sense! Am I missing something?!? Don't even give me the answer, well they could still have BYU basketball games, no! There's not enough money there for it to mean a dag gone thing to them! It's like if you were standing there listening to a brand new iPod touch, and somebody walked up to you and said, Hey Can I have that? and you respond, "Well I don't know... I guess so!" and the person that now has your ipod says thanks! I'll leave you with the case cover. and somehow you'd be happy with that and just let that happen?

Agreed. If this happens we know BYU has some serious sway. They don't have enough to pull that off. I wish they did. Would be happy if they did, but don't see it happening.

I would bet Schmoe's lacrosse sticks that byu goes independent. Its a done deal. Just a matter of figuring out the best place for our non football sports to go.

mwc is first option. won't happen. wac is second option, unless they can, with espn's help, get some good teams in the way (what they are probably trying to do right now), that is not going to happen. third option, wcc. I suspect that because of the time we end up with the third option. football indy, rest in wcc until something better comes a long which will be where it really gets interesting (nd, texas, byu all indy.... other schools to follow creating a 'indy power conference' for only schools who have the ability to do so (tv deals with networks or their own tv stations..etc.)

The only way this analysis is wrong is if hair comes crawling to byu with some MAJOR tv rights concessions. is it possible, yes, but i give it about a 5 percent chance.

I agree. Like Dick Harmon said the MWC/MTN/Comcast will have to address 95% of BYU's concerns and I just don't see that happening. I voted Indy as well.

:bug: Just kidding, I would also bet Lingo's flaming twirly-stick that BYU goes Indy.

I just pumped my BYU insider for info, and came up with nothing. He works in the Athletic Department in the NCAA compliance area, and says he was working the Men's VBall case. He also said it was well known in the AD about the BYU jumping ship to the WAC, but says right now, it is all on lockdown. HE says every tome he sees the big shots in the AD, they are walking fast talking on cell phones or in behind closed door meetings, and they are not talking. I think the WAC deal blowing up has put them in a position where they are not talking at all, except to people who need to know. He did say that the reasons that BYU looked at Indy in football are still the same, though, but he gave no opinion on what might happen or when. Just that he will be glad when it does so we can get back to focusing on BYU football.
