Gonzaga AD Mike Roth: BYU "has given us assurances and backed that" about not using WCC as stepping stone to another conference affiliation.

The WCC has to know that BYU would accept an invitation to the Big 12, but that it's uncertain whether or not that will happen. If it doesn't happen, then sure, it will probably be a long term member of the WCC.

Basically, BYU won't leave the WCC unless a Big 12 invite comes along. His comment does, however, make me question the idea that some have been throwing around of BYU trying to form their own conference.

The WCC (http://www.wccsports.com/ looks to be a great fit. They are a non-football conference which fits us perfectly. They also are all private religious schools which fits us well.

Gonzaga - private Catholic school and is a Jesuit school. "A constant throughout the years is Gonzaga’s educational philosophy, based on the centuries-old Ignatian model of educating the whole person – mind, body and spirit" (http://www.gonzaga.edu/About/default.asp). Sounds familiar.

Loyola Marymount University - private Roman Catholic school and is a Jesuit and a Marymount school located in LA. There's a "conservative" school in LA? Wow.

Pepperdine Universtiy - private school affiliated with the Churches of Christ. "Pepperdine University is a Christian university committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values, where students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership" (http://www.pepperdine.edu/).

Portland University - private Methodist school. "an education of the heart and mind by focusing on three central elements: teaching, faith, and service" (http://www.up.edu/about/).

Saint Mary's College of California - private Roman Catholic school. "We encourage you to embrace complexity, contemplate your place and purpose in the world, and undertake a searching examination of self, spirit and society" (http://www.stmarys-ca.edu/about-smc/index.html).

University of San Diego - private Roman Catholic school. "As a Roman Catholic institution, the University of San Diego believes that faith and reason are compatible in education, and that true knowledge can only be discerned from a breadth of sources" (http://www.sandiego.edu/about/catholicidentity/tradition.php).

University of San Francisco - private Roman Catholic school and is a Jesuit school. "Academic excellence in the service of humankind" (http://usfca.edu/about/mission/).

Santa Clara University - private Roman Catholic school and a is a Jesuit school. "...demonstrates faith-inspired values of ethics and social justice" (http://www.scu.edu/aboutscu/).

I hope that if the conference expands that it will keep to this model of memberships. Looks like we'll be in California a lot. We already get a lot of California recruits, but do you think that this will help us more?

And given the talk that BYU might be invited as a football-only member of the Big 12, it makes prefect sense to be a long term partner with fellow religious schools.

I'd much rather watch BYU Basketball in the Big 12 - Hopefully there's a Big 12 escape clause

I hope we can keep our Texas recruiting luck.

Another plus, these guys might quit playing on Sundays.

I think it's a great fit. With the animosities of prior conferences and match ups, it is refreshing to be welcomed into a conference with likeminded universities. I don't see a lot of conference opponents dressing up as missionaries, chanting "f--- you BYU", spilling beer on our kids and then picking a fight with a player's wife. I actually think the WCC could become a conference that helps BYU athletics better fulfill the mission of the school and the church. If the independent route is working out well, why would we move on to the big 12 if they came calling? I could see the board of trustees wanting to stick with independence and the WCC if it brings better quality exposure to the university and the church. I don't think being in a "power conference" is a requirement for them.

I wouldn't be so sure. My cousin lived in Eastern WA for a while and attended a Zags basketball game. He said they were the crudest, most obnoxious fans he'd ever seen. The following is an example from another opposing fan's perspective:

http://www.cougcenter.com/2009/12/3/1184417/screw-you-classless-gonzaga-fan" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then, there was last night.

In a move that screamed, "Look at us! We're clever like those wacky Cameron Crazies!", I heard this coming over my television:

"CAS-TO CAN'T READ!" (clap, clap, clap clap clap)

And suddenly, everything I ever thought about Gonzaga fans came flooding back.

DeAngelo Casto is a kid who has made something of himself coming out of some amazingly tough circumstances. True, he had a difficult time qualifying out of high school, but he did. And, by all accounts, he's comported himself well in the classroom at WSU up until this point. He's also a well-spoken individual who has done nothing but work his tail off to become better since coming to Pullman. He's been a class act all the way.

Same can't be said for those Gonzaga fans. Of all the people to pick on, the elitist white private school students go ahead and choose the African-American kid whose parents were both dead by the time he was eight? And target his academic difficulties, which pretty much anyone in his circumstances would have had?

That's a real shame. After reading up on the universities in the WCC I got the feeling that "some" only had loose religious ties. It's up to the dean and the student body to set forth the type of atmosphere they want on campus and at games. If what you describe is an often occurrance then they obviously don't follow their mission statement. I guess we'll get so see first hand. Hopefully we show them what true class means.

I considered going to Pepperdine for grad school two years ago, and I just found out last week that they had any religious affiliation whatsoever. I think it's thought of more as a "we happen to be located RIGHT ON THE BEACH" school; wouldn't be surprised if the student body reflects accordingly.

I don't really care if a school is religiously affiliated or not. Just want the fanbases to be classy.

Let's be careful when discussing the fanbases of our soon-to-be conference mates. There's a ton of MWC fans that will say anything negative that they can come up with about us. Let's have some of our own experiences and interactions with the fans before we decide what to think of them.

I think that's a good call. And frankly, if Gonzaga fans are rowdy (not mean-spirited, but rowdy), I think that'd be great. It'd be fun to develop a rivalry with them.

A couple of kids from Gonzaga just transferred to my school and are in a bunch of my classes. They're cool.

I agree. I was merely stating that being a "like-minded" institution doesn't automatically mean there won't be issues. I certainly look forward to playing Gonzaga twice a year.

Yeah, after all Utah is marketing itself to LDS kids as a good 'ol Mormon school.

I agree. The WCC can't be any worse then the MWC as far as class goes. Time will only tell how they act around BYU so lets reserve our judgement until then.

I am excited to attend the WCC tournament in Vegas though. That will be fun.
