Meh. I think you guys are drawing assumptions about the way certain coaches would be if they were here, when it's impossible to tell. Bronco knows what is expected of a coach that takes the job here and he does a great job with that. But since we don't know how he was as a head coach before he came here it's impossible to tell what he would have been like had he not gotten the job here. Goll, guys, do you wonder why other teams think we're stuck up and holier than thou? Not all of you are saying ugly things about the guy, but what is all this "douchebag in real life" stuff? Man. Says YOU I guess.

Here's the thing: Coaching at BYU is not like coaching anywhere else. Since Bronco hasn't been head coach anywhere else we can't compare apples to oranges, like the fact that Kyle ran up the score on the team of the meanest, ugliest football (outside their own) fans in the Mountain West. I was STOKED when Kyle made that onside kick. Now, you can sit on your horse and say, "Bronco would never do that." But the thing is, had Kyle been coaching at BYU at the time, HE probably never would have done it EITHER. He would know that wouldn't fly at BYU. He's no idiot. Comparing how one coach does things AS THE COACH OF BYU to another coach and how he does things AT A PLACE NOTHING LIKE BYU is just really not being fair. Some of you guys (not all, obviously) pick up EVERY SINGLE THING he does and you just seem to get SO OFFENDED. I just think we should cut the guy a break is all. What need is there to cast so many stones? What good does it do us? We have an awesome coach. We have no need to knock someone else's. I think that only makes us look insecure. The way so many of you talk on here, I know you'd be down for a late onside kick if we were playing somebody we REALLY hated too. You'd laugh all the way to church the next day and defend the act tooth and nail if we did. (I would. I'd be STOKED if we were up fifty on Utah and kicked an on-sider. Serve them right for screwing with our haka a few years back  )

Now we're saying how glad we are that Mike Leach isn't here? How do you know how he would have done here? Look, I get that you're grateful for Bronco. I am too. I honestly wouldn't trade Bronco for ANYBODY in college football today, but like I said originally, if for some reason he were to pack up tomorrow, there are plenty of guys I would be happy to give the nod to, and Kyle is one of them.

Admit it. How AWESOME would it be to steal the Utes' coach from them? Just like we stole their thunder by announcing we were shacking up with ESPN the day before their opener :) Ahahahahahaha

Problem is, the fans weren't playing the game. That was just plain stupid and should have been embarrassing for Utah football. I don't care who you are playing, you should respect your opponent enough to not go out of your way to get flipped off.

Personally, I don't think Kyle would have lasted at BYU and I think we'd be on our third coach after Lavell if we'd have hired him. I think his model is much more similar to what Gary Crowton tried. Although I think Kyle is a better coach than Crowton, I don't think he'd still be around. I don't think he could have turned around the program like Bronco has.

Meh. I've always said, and I still believe this, that the only way to disrespect your opponent is to give less than your best. That is the true betrayal of competitive trust.

There was an article by Rick Reilly a while back about a basketball coach that he "wanted to run over with his car" because he was running up the score on inferior competition. He beat one team by 100 pts. He thought he was the devil himself for running up the scores that high, even with his second-stringers in. He thought we was demoralizing kids and that he was hurting their self-esteem and should be fired. (I think he was.) The title of the article was, "Somebody stop this man" I think.

I wrote Reilly and told him how much I respected his work and have loved reading him ever since I was a kid and knew his intentions were good and that he was coming from a place of charity. But I told him how wrong I thought he was.

I told him the story of when I was eleven years old and playing on a poor neighborhood soccer team named the Thunder. As it so happened, we ran up against a rich kid (corporate sponsor, nice bags, expensive uniforms, etc) team called...(wait for it) the Lightning :)

For anybody who knows soccer, you know that a thorough beat down has occurred when you have lost 3-0. If it ever got to 5-0 you would wonder why the other team even bothered to show up. You might ask if they were in the younger age bracket or if they were girls or something.

Well, on that fateful day, the Lightning beat us...(wait for it)....11-0. Yup. Eleven big ones. They never let up. Biggest embarrassment of my life. Went home that day feeling like a failure and a chump. I hated those guys for that. Made me reconsider even playing.

Funny thing happened though. Our team never forgot them. We obsessed over them. We stewed over them. We thought about them and talked about them and feared and dreaded ever playing them again. But dude did we turn it up a notch in practice.

One year later we got our rematch. We won 3-2. Same kids. Same corporate sponsor. New name. (Kamikaze), but different result. And six months later, our indoor soccer team beat them 3-2 again in the under 12 years championship game. That year we got so good at indoor soccer that our twelve year olds team challenged UVSC's women's soccer team to an indoor match and won 6-1.

Lightning RESPECTING US enough to NOT LET UP fueled us and turned us into better players. I couldn't be more grateful for the reality check they gave us that day. It has ever since been my opinion that the only disrespect in sports is to give less than your best all the way till the buzzer. Nobody likes pity.

Why do you think girls hate to play sports with guys? It's not because we're better, but because we know we're better we don't try to make them feel bad and we go easy on them. This insults them and they quit. I was happy for Wyoming the day Kyle kicked their rears and stoked to see that middle finger of their coach fly. It gives me hope they might pull out a shocker on our rivals in their Mountain West goodbye tour this year. I applaud Kyle for not letting up and wish nobody ever would.

Out of respect.

Running up the score is fine by just playing your game, but if you need to run it up through onside kicks or trick plays turns it into a classless act.

Agree. Playing your best competitive football does not include an onsides kick when winning by 40 points. That is nothing more than a slap in the face. It is unsportsmanlike.

He should have had his twos in the game and had every right to expect that they would execute and play 110%.

Instead he slapped a man in the face with an onsides kick when winning by 40 points. That told me all I needed to know about Whittingham.

That said, he has done a great job at Utah. He has a tremendous record against BCS competition. Lots of the wins come like the Pitt win did, some luck, last minute heriocs, etc, but he's recruited a bunch of talent up on the Hill and I think they'll compete well in the PAC-10.

Doesn't mean I wasn't hoping Utah would lose last night.

I also feel better about the BYU/Utah relationship now that we've parted ways. Kind of like leaving an abusive relationship.

Does he do a great job at winning football games? Sure, especially at getting him team UP to play BCS teams (which usually means a subsequent loss to a lesser team that they should have beaten, but that aside...). However, there is a LOT more to being a coach than just winning games. Even when it's D1 football, you still are an example and should still use positive coaching techniques (believe it or not, there actually ARE more effective and less effective methods, it can't all just be written off as "different styles"). I have been to coaching clinics and have never heard anyone endorse coaching the way that KWhitt does. Why? Because it's a singular focus, much like Urban Meyer: Win no matter what. Lie, cheat, steal, belittle your players, be the alphamale, etc. There is a lot more to coaching than that, and if you can't win while having integrity and treating others right, then what's the point?

My younger brother (now an attorney in Provo) was neighbors with & friends of Kyle Whittingham in high school. He speaks pretty highly of Kyle. He is still friends with the family & has a good relationship w/ Kyle's Mom. The "game face" that Kyle professionally puts on is his thing. Privately - he's a good dude.

I still despise the Yewts. Screw them till their BLUE!!!!
