As long as we're airing things we hate to admit.. In past years BYU's D has looked like a bunch of pasty fat kids. I was impressed by the Utes' D last night.. they looked fairly fast and athletic. I'm hoping BYU's D impresses likewise tomorrow.

As far as the wearing blue goes I have always been disappointed with the Legacy Seating area. It seems to me that the last few years have been pretty good in wearing blue except for the Legacy Seats. Yeah you've given a lot of money to BYU but c'mon guys, it's not that hard. You can give all this money to BYU but you can't spend $5 on a shirt? Bronco asked that we wear blue to the games and BYU has made it as easy and inexpensive as humanly possible to do so.

NOW DO IT!

As to wearing blue, they need to get the word out as to what blue people need to wear. I know, but most don't. And people I think don't understand that white isn't acceptable because the song says, "wear the white and blue". They really need to do a better job at promoting WHAT blue needs to be worn, and that it IS blue that needs to be worn.

And the student section is absolutely rediculous. I didn't attend BYU (UVU), but my wife did and she bought me an All sports pass (I guarantee I was the loudest best fan there, so I don't feel too bad about that) and it was all I could do not to murder the kids around me. I think that they should raise the price on the student tickets, and keep them local instead of bouncing around. BYU needs to be more than "something to do" and I agree, that anyone wearing any color but blue can be shown a shirt, and told buy it, or forfeit your seat. Also, be there for a half hour before the game, or your seat will be given up. It's not like we don't sell out the games... There are a lot of fans that would want to be down in the end zone, making noise instead of the nosebleeds. It pissed me off that I was the biggest Y fan there, and I didn't even go to BYU. The only time everyone was in unison, is when they play the jaws, star wars, popcorn, or "Since you been gone, I couldn't breathe for the first time." I almost burned down the whole student section, I promise, I did.

and I'm sorry, but if you're a girl you shouldn't be allowed in the student section unless you are dressed in blue... you can find somewhere else to find a date for next week...

Drove me bonkers!!!

Utah fans were awesome last night. That sea of red was impressive to see in that whole stadium. I just wish the BYU student body would get their chit together like the MUSS, which is a solid student section, especially with such recent success. Bronco needs to do with them what Urban did to build it up. BYU fans need to wear navy blue, come ready and be loud. Instead, many wear whatever, would rather sing Popcorn Popping and throw tortillas. BYU fans need to start acting the part.

I am pumped for game day. I hope all 64,000 show up at LES ready as well, and wear blue.

Most "fans" who show up to their school's games are actually college football fans. BYU - on the other hand - has too many old farts and young molly mormons/peter priesthoods at their games, who see the games as more of a social outing than they do an actual game. They don't understand the game, the rules, or the importance of wearing blue. To them, going to a BYU football game isn't much different than attending their annual stake basketball tournament.

I had season passes last year, and with every single game I went to, there were always students in front of me who were more busy gossiping about who was dating who than they were watching the game. Some of them left the game mid 3rd-quarter, regardless the score. Oh - and they weren't wearing navy blue.

BYU should make it optional to buy football tickets with the sports pass, and make them a little more pricey for those that do, and the tickets that aren't sold, just go to the people on the waiting list to get season tickets. Problem solved, people that don't want to be there, won't. It's not like we need a student section in the football games when we have 64,000 fans screaming.

Drove me bonkers!!!

But taking a girl to a football game makes such a great date. Especially if you can convince your roommate to give up his Sports Pass for one game because then you don't have to pay for anything.

Or, you can get your girlfriend/soon-to-be fiance to buy a Sports Pass with you along with your friend and his girlfriend/soon-to-be fiance. That way the two girlfriends can chat and gossip while you watch a game.

Unfortunately, by the 3rd quarter the girls have run out of gossip and they've realized you haven't been "paying attention to them," so it's off to the Brick Oven or BYU Creamery to make up for the neglect.

Football games aren't dates. It's like taking a girl to a movie on a date just to sit there for two hours in silence. If your girlfriend likes games and is an actual fan and is not just pretending so she can hold your hand, then and only then, take her to a game. How can you tell? She'll already have her own Sports Pass and blue BYU t-shirt to go with it, which she'll be wearing without any prompting from you when you go to pick her up. Like my wife. :D

It's funny because it's true.

This is seriously my biggest beef about the games in Provo. The environment is (other than Utah games and a few others) very docile. I guess that is indicative or our fanbase, but a large portion of people at the games are students who are there to be seen.

I dont know how many times when I was at the Y I would be furious with the student section not watching the game, but playing fashion games and "look at me, I wear Abercrombie and Fitch" dating shenanigans.

Our stadium unfortunately is not designed well for noise on the field (compared to some other venues) but it sure doesn't help to have cargo ken in full rut in the middle of the game hunting down his BYU Barbie eternal companion.

Until drinking becomes a larger part of the BYU game day experience, there will continue to be gripes about the fans.

I don't know how big U stadium is, but it's got to be 2/3 the size of LES. You're not going to fill up a 65k stadium in Provo with just superfans. Not everyone needs to be yelling and standing the entire game. But the MUSS was impressive last night. It did look like there was a uniform standard (standard T-shirt) required to get into the section. Requiring students to wear that shirt is perfectly reasonable, and it looked stunning on ESPN.

Navy blue will never stand out like Utah red. Ever. A complete blue out would be just that...mellow and blue.

Royal blue is much more vibrant.

Someone at BYU needs to step up and take institutional responsibility and establish a section like the MUSS and enforce a dress standard (easy, this is, after all BYU, where dress standards are the norm). Not wearing the shirt? Go home and get it or buy it out front for $5. You don't get in the section without the shirt. It needs to be the same shirt for everyone. Or a jersey. Nothing else would work.

Penn St pulls off an impressive white out, but white just isn't our color. Never really will be.

As far as I'm concerned, the old timers on in the West stands can keep wearing their 1980s royal blue with the crawling Cougar. They've bought a seat and love BYU football just like the rest of us.

Just make the students wear old school royal blue and it would stand out just fine. Seriously, it's hard to believe that a fan section hasn't been organized and marketed at BYU. With how rabid byu fans are how has this not happened?

From what I can tell on TV, it looks like there has been an attempt to organize something remotely like the "cameron crazies" at bball games, but that's hard to do in a cavernous place like the MC.

Maybe you actually hit on it there. BYU doesn't want a more rabid group of fans. They prefer a subdued group. Large groups tend to adopt a pack mentality and pretty soon they're doing things that may potentially embarrass your school. I remember while I was a student there was a whole fuss about fans taking their shirts off and painting letters on them. It was basically banned and debated in Sunday School:

"In a 2002 devotional address, President Bateman also asked students to wear shirts to the games rather than painting their chests BYU blue."

"Former president Merrill J. Bateman issued an edict against what he called poor sportsmanship and inappropriate treatment of guests. He was chided in the press for attempting to suppress healthy fan enthusiasm."

If the last article there is accurate, sounds like the bigger issue is psychotic fans harassing our own players.

I'm impressed with all their flags they fly back and forth. I thought that would look really sweet if we have 50+ flags flying around after we score a TD, or trying to intimidate the opponents.

You don't have to be drunk to wear blue to the games and actually MAKE SOME NOISE.

Yes, I'm very impressed with a school in a much larger population area than ours, with a stadium built with Olympic money that's still 20,000 seats smaller than ours and does not sell out every game. Very impressed indeed.

I don't think they had a problem selling out last night. I don't think they'll have a problem selling out when PAC-10 teams come to visit.

Unless they start losing and badly, I don't think they're going to have sellout problems in the near future.

But I think BYU has a really good chance here, with independent scheduling, to have consistent sellouts into eternity.

We already have consistent sellouts, even when playing UNM, SDSU, WYO, etc. That's one of the big differences between a dedicated fan base and a fickle bandwagon one. You really think that Rice-Chex will sell out for WSU?

The original point to teh post is that Utah fans do a great job wearing red to games, and BYU fans need to step up wear blue to home games. I do not hink it is even debatable. BYU needs t start a campaign with signs in LES for fans to "Come Early, Wear Blue, Be Heard".
