Why are we talking about Stanford's lack of a mascot????? What about this Sampson dude?

It's all about perspective. Sampson - Stanford - what's the difference?????

Didn't they used to have an Indian as their mascot?

Oh, and on the topic of this thread, how many more spots do we have available?

With all of our worry about replacing Scot Johnson and whether Steven is going to be stepping up; i was more concerned about losing Rich at the end of this year. Add Sampson to everett and the others and we will not lose a beat next year. Awesome news.

Andrew Rich would have been a big loss; this certainly bodes well for 2011.

We'll be very deep too. Remember we have a ton of non- lds or non-mission kids at most positions that will literally get 4-5 straight years of BYU football.

Now, what do we have to do to convince Matt Reynolds to come back for his senior season? Do that and we have a national championship contender. 2011 could be ridiculous if we can get Reynolds to come back.

We're going to go from the youngest and most inexperienced team this year to several years of unprecendented continuity.

The Mascot: There is no official mascot at Stanford University. The "Tree," which is a member of the Stanford Band, is representative of El Palo Alto, the Redwood tree which is the logo of the city of Palo Alto. Since Stanford University and Palo Alto are almost inextricably intertwined in interests and location, it is a natural outgrowth of this relationship. The tree still exists and stands by the railroad bridge beside San Francisquito Creek – it is the site where early explorers first camped when settling the area.

The Color: When Stanford first accepted students in 1891, the student body actually voted for gold as the school’s official color, but another student assembly chose Cardinal as the school color. A few days after the vote, local sportswriters picked up the "Cardinal" theme after Stanford defeated Cal in the first Big Game (March 19, 1891). The headlines read, "Cardinal Triumphs O’er Blue and Gold."

Wow, that's pretty impressive! Do you also know how (or why) the school itself came to be?

Because Mr Stanford's Son (heir) died young so Mr Stanford had to do something with his gobs of money since he had no posterior. ;)

What?? he had no butt? I think you mean posterity . . . ;)

Yessssir!! From 1930 to 1972 Stanford was known as "The Indians." From 1951 to 1972 the Stanford mascot, "Prince Lightfoot" was portrayed by a real Native American Indian - a member of the Yurok tribe.

But - in 1972 members of Stanford's staff & Native American students lobbied to eliminate the mascot & Indian name. The school Pres. agreed & abolished the sports team name "Indians" & the mascot. Stanford sports teams became known as the school color - "Cardinal" from 1972 till now. Over the years, petitions & debates have been raised to establish a team name & a mascot. Various mascots have been suggested (the Griffin), even bringing the "Indian" back. No such luck. In 1981 the Stanford Pres. declared - all athletic teams will be called the color "Cardinal." Since then, that's been it. Voila - you are a color!!!!

From Michael Jackson's "Black or White"

I've seen the bright

get duller

I'm not going to spend

my life being a color

Maybe he never knew about Stanford where they force you to be a color, though it's not black or white, it's :utard: color.

[sigh] I thought that putting the ;) at the end, as well as writing the earlier sentence about how his heir/son had died, would allow me to make the posterior/posterity joke without people misunderstanding my intent, but alas, 'twas not to be. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go to the libary to do some nucular research, for rill.

Man, this recruiting edge given to Utah for moving to the pac10 is really killing us.

This sltrib article is simply referring to the total blue sports blog post. Nothing new. Also I wonder why no other reports have come out independently verifying the commit. tbs says that sampson is not returning their calls. Hope that doesn't mean anything. are their other sources reporting it that i missed?

Amazing sampson article up on tbs:

States that sampson was basically going to utah because of their pac10 invite. then independence happened and he visited byu over the weekend. the rest is history.

so independence was a big deal in his decision. leaving the mwc is already helping us.

In believe in that same article it said the Sampson had offers from Oregon and Oregon State. This kid is going to be a great pick up for BYU. Hopefully Langi see's the independence thing the same way Sampson did

I have heard that many think langi won't translate to the college level that well. I tend to believe them after watching him but you can't deny that he is a special talent.

If we gave him a Urim and Thummim, would he be able to translate well then?

I don't know. I used to think that too, then I saw some plays in the Bingham-Alta game and it changed my mind. He runs hard--really hard. Plus, he has a burst Unga never had. He weighs less than Harvey, but has more speed and is tough to bring down. Not saying he is world beater RB, but I think he is going to be really good because of how hard he plays and how he uses his strength to his advantage.
