Probably saw this coming anyway. Did not play v. UW, and as highly touted as he was, and the chemistry he had with Jake, that was a surprise. This makes it easier to slap that RS on him. Also means the other guys in the group have 1 less guy breathing down their necks to push them. Hope they step up.

He's #11 right? If so... He played on special teams. I saw his number on the field and had to double check in the program.

This is a blessing in disguise I think, Apo has all the upside in the world but wasn't picking up the offense quickly enough. RS him, give him a full year in the offense before he has to go live and he'll terrorize DBs for 4 years after that.
Apo played in a couple special teams plays against Washington, which means he cannot take a "normal" redshirt year. The injury won't sideline him for the rest of the season, so he cannot ask the NCAA for a medical redshirt.

If so, he played in less than 1/4 of our games before his injury, so depending on how long he is medically unavailable, a medical RS is still available.

In college you can have duplicate numbers. There could be another #11 on the team.

Bronco has verified that Apo played at least two downs.

My understanding of the Apo situation is that an open finger dislocation isn't considered "incapacitating" by the NCAA and only "incapacitating" injuries qualify for a medical hardship. The length of time you are out is also considered in deciding whether the injury is incapacitating.

Google "open finger dislocation" in Google images if you dare. It sure would be incapacitating for me
But as for Apo I do not see how he could get a redshirt or a medical redshirt based off of the rules as I understand them. It's too bad. This would have been the perfect situation for him to redshirt. Would have given him 4 full seasons instead of 3 1/2.

I have never seen an open finger dislocation, but a friend of mine got an open toe dislocation when we were teaching our kids how to ride razor scooters in sandals. After seeing that I can pretty well imagine what the finger looks like. Nasty as they look/are though, the NCAA has refused hardships for open finger dislocations in the past on the grounds that they weren't incapacitating. I think that is why BYU is not going to pursue the medical hardship with Apo.
As far as the idea that BYU is posturing, I can't remember a time when BYU has misrepresented their intentions. When the BYU administrators posture, it's through silence, not misdirection.
