We have to start Heaps ...

Passing game takes rythm and practice. You cannot gauge Heaps by his 2/6 performance today. That is just idiotic. 2/6 is not an opportunity especially when you are a freshmen and especially when you sit out every other possession picking your crack waiting for your next chance. This is ridiculous. The two QB system works great when you win, when you don't win the crap hits the fan and guess what, we've got crap all over us.

If you think Riley is a BYU QB you are blind and you will be disappointed...mark my words. Time to bring in a new era and let Heaps get the reps needed. If Heaps were to start two games he would advance along that learning curve very quickly and all of you Nelson-ites would realize the error of your ways.

If Riley was so damn good there would not have been a quarterback competition. He should have walked on campus in Spring and dominated thanks to Brenden Gaskins but he didn't and that is significant.

Pretty sad when I had the thought a couple of times today that if Riley keeps putting his head down like that he's going to get injured or get a concussion minimum, followed by the thought, "hmm, that wouldn't be all that bad if Riley got a concussion right about now." I'm probably not the only one that thought that either. FYI, I was one of the ones cheering for John Beck to be the full time starter over Berry. At this point I'd rather Berry come back and suite up than have Riley be in there. Sure he is electric and fun and emotional but he's not BYU.

I just don't think enough people understand that this year needs to be a rebuilding year in which we give all of this young talent we have experience and confidence.

BYU will not be playing in a BCS bowl game this year, but there is great potential for that over the next three years if we actually do the right things this year.

what was Jake's stats 2-6 for 15 yards and a pick? I am not convinced that Heaps is the answer either.

Bingo. Also, not Nelson's fault that receivers refuse to catch. The obvious thing is that we have a problem on our hands. The solution, however, doesn't appear to be as obvious.

But it is Heaps' fault for some reason?

So let's freaking rebuild, then!!! Nobody rebuilds with temporary Nelson bricks.

Nelson proved today that even he doesn't trust his own arm. And a true QB does not tuck the ball while in the pocket. Just watch any NFL or college game and you will see that. They keep the ball out so they can make a last second toss, but not Nelson. He was tucking it while still in the pocket. That is inexcusable. You cannot throw the ball if you have it tucked under your arm.

As for the second half, AF stacked the box and made his legs ineffective. We basically became one dimensional and easy to defend.

As for Heaps, he needs reps to get the timing. But the main O problem was the WR's. I am positive that Reed would have caught the tipped ball in the endzone. And I bet Heaps would not have had the INT if the WR's were better. They did not run their routes correctly because there is supposed to be separation. The INT happened because one DB was able to cover two WR's. If you don't believe me go back and you will see that the INT was by the CB who was covering the flat. How does a CB covering the flat make a downfield INT? It's called the WR's not getting enough seperation.

BTW the JJ fumble happend when Heaps was in not Riley. Had JJ not fumbled we probably score a td and the game has a completely different complexion. WIth Heaps in there the running game is much more effective because the D cannot cheat up to defend the run. They have to respect his arm. As for JJ, he needs to sleep with a ball this next week. This is not HS and you must be more aware of ball security. How many career fumbles did Harvey have? Not that JJ is as good as Harvey but I think JJ passed Harvey last year or two years ago in total fumbles.

Let the competition continue but from the last game I would rather see Heap because I think I can scheme a very effective game plan against Riley. I knew exactly what he was going to do every snap. And that is just silly that I can sit at home and figure out what he is going to do before the snap.

BTW even the annoucers were commenting on the ducks that Riley kept thowing.

As for the game, I would prefer having won six in a row and losing this one than losing the last six and winning this one. I'm not worried about our future but I know Bronco now sees how much work there really is, especially on defense. BTW why did we give AF WR's a 10 yard cushion when they run 80% of the time? And will we ever get a CB that can shed blockers?

Nope, the only player who shed a block all night was Rich and maybe Pendleton one time too. But wow our CB's are soft in run defense.

Brayden Green
And how many times did pendleton go sideline to sideline to almost make a tackle across the field? That was terrible defense.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Nelson is not good enough to win games for us that Heaps couldn't. Any game we are going to lose with Heaps, we are going to lose with Nelson, too.

And as I - and many others - have said several times, I am 100% fine with losing 3, 4, or even 5 games this year if that's what it takes to give all of our young talent the preparation they're going to be needing for next year.

Next year is HUGE. First year of independence. Games on ESPN. Opening game against Texas, who happens to play for a certain conference we are trying to impress. I couldn't care less about this year if it means a great 2011-2012 season. Nelson does not run the sort of offense we will be playing after he is gone. Playing him right now does absolutely NOTHING for the team. Yes - NOTHING.

Totally agree. We lose another year unless we rebuild this year.

Imagine Texas stacking the box against Nelson... ** SHUDDER **

We wouldn't even break 20 yards in offense.

Exactly. A Nelson-esque offense is not going to do JACK against a Texas defense - and Texas defense >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Air Force defense.

QB Thoughts:

1- Nelson is a better QB than Heaps right now. He's moving the chains better, getting more yards, making smarter decisions.

2- The team is worse with Nelson at QB. This is undeniable now. After a few series, the defense will put 8 men in the box and let Riley run 3 times in a row for 2 yards each, then punt. BYU cannot win this way, not more than about 5 games. It is not a BYU offense, and it ain't a good offense anywhere else either.

3- The team is better with Heaps at QB. This is because JJ DiLuigi IS our offense right now. Without him we're nothing. Doesn't matter how many times we fumble- We had 140 yards in the 1st quarter with JJ leading the offense, and barely anything after taking the ball away from him. Anae often panics in tough games and makes terrible decisions like this as our OC (This is why Bronco hasn't won a single game in 6 years where we went down by 13+ points). By keeping in Nelson and causing 8 defenders to run protect, we cancel out JJ and we lose our #1 threat. Especially with Nelson running 3 times more than JJ per game, but gaining less than half of the yards per carry. With Heaps throwing, the opposing D must respect the air game, which opens up the run game for JJ to do his thing. He had over 11 yards per carry against Air Force! We used him for ONE quarter, and scored 14 points. We used Nelson instead of JJ for the next THREE quarters, and scored 0 points. Besides, Heaps will be the guy in 2011, 2012, and 2013 as well. Start him now, and he starts playing better, making smarter decisions. And the O-Line, WRs, and TEs will all adjust to him and play better as well, allowing the D to stay off the field more and play smarter as a result of being better rested.

So, to recap:

Nelson > Heaps right now, BUT!...

Heaps + JJ > Nelson + JJ

BYU with Heaps > BYU with Nelson

Any questions?

I agree that a QB is at his best when they're using all their weapons. And we need the coaches to realize our biggest offensive weapon right now is JJ.

Riley needs to do a much better job in getting teammates involved. Being the offense on 39 of your teams 59 plays is not doing that.

Jake must get better. His completion percentage is worse than Riley's and Riley's is hardly acceptable (52.8%). His passer rating is atrocious (87.12). BYU has won one game (1-10) since 2000 with a passer rating that low. Even if you discount the AF game, where Jake only played half, BYU's record with a 104 passer rating is 7-18 (since 2000).

Receivers, tight ends and running backs must step up and start making plays for BOTH QBs. The dropped passes must cease. The fumbles must end. The penalties must desist. They hurt Jake more than Riley, because they have killed his drives and rhythm more than the rotation was. They were what was ending his drives and getting him off the field.

And coaches need to do a much better job at putting the QBs and team in positions to succeed. Something I think they thought they were doing, but clearly does not appear to have transpired.

Oh, and that was an excellent post by Mars.

With all of that poise, what's his efficiency rating? His completion percentage? How many touchdowns has he thrown?

ESPNU announcers:

"And coaches have commented on how amazingly poised he is for a true freshman"
