Nelson runs the option great. The problem is that the option can't be the center piece of the offense. There are times and places that Nelson should come in and run that type of offense, but not the whole game. Having said that...I am not sure it makes a difference who the slinger is if the receivers are going to drop the ball on key downs.

AFA uses the QB Option as their centerpiece offense - and they thrashed our Defense pretty well with it. AFA just had a better game plan & brought a lot of energy to the game. AFA won that game. They beat us good. Now we look for "teachable points" - grow - evolve & move on.

No doubt they beat us good, but the option offense BYU has been running does not even compare to what AFA runs. I did not see any FB dives from BYU. I did not see the AFA QBs calling their own number 75% of the time. My point is not that you can't win playing option football. My point is that BYU is not going to win playing option football. I think it is great to have it in the arsenal, we need to play BYU football, not AFA football. We just saw what happens when we try to out AFA the AFA.

Immediately after the game, i said, if I was the coach, I would name Heaps the starter. Heaps is the future of BYU football, not Nelson. BYU is never going to win anything with an option offense, we don't recruit that way, we don't have the athletes for that game, and it's not going to be productive for BYU. Name Heaps the starter for FSU, and go with him. He'll have some rough moments, no doubt, but the reason BYU went to the passing tame 40 years ago is because BYU couldn't win game running the ball--I don't believe that has changed. If the coaches stick with Nelson or the two QB system, we'll be lucky to have a winning season.

Whatever happened, Heaps was pretty pissed about the decission because

1. He wasn't standing by Doman. (This is normal to do.)

2. He wasn't wearing a headset

3. He wasn't hurt because he had his helmet on

4. He was warming his arm up during the 4th quarter behind the cougar bench.

I saw that, and what was with him going out in the huddle on 4th and 2? It was like they changed their mind to send him in, and then changed it again. Like, go out there, No! Don't.

4th and two after he has been out a realtime 40 minutes isn't the time you want to make that substitution you should have made in the first place.
