I think BYU fans will turn on Jake equally as well. Even last year I heard calls from the stands that Riley should come in for Max. BYU fans won't ever be satisifed by the QB position. Not even if Steve Young or Ty Detmer came back and started. People remember the great games against Miami, but they forget about the 5 INT games he had against the likes of Oregon, Utah State, Hawaii. Jake won't be immune to it either.

I agree, the most popular player in BYU history is the backup QB, regardless of who the QB is at the time.

Well, you aren't going to get 100% of anybody in agreement on any topic. There's always a few morons in a crowd.

It's not like the crowd was chanting, "Riley! Riley! Riley!"

I stand by my original post on the matter. A few select people shouldn't be the basis for a decision when the overwhelming majority feel the other way. Most people would support Jake throughout the year. A whole lot more will be disappointed watching our offense continue to transmogrify itself into something it is not.

It is the prevailing opinon on this board, and in the media that Riley Nelson does not have the physical tools to be a BYU QB. Is this true? IMO it is not. I don't think that Bronco is stupid. Robert Anae has a DR's degree so he is also not stupid and Doman is a very intelligent person and probably knows BYU's offense as good as Anae does. These are some really smart people and they have decided to play Riley which leads me to believe that they believe he has the physical tools to run BYU"s offense. Did he do a good job of that on Saturday? Well, we all know the answer to that question. I still think that he has the ability to throw the ball in BYU's offense. It still is up to the recievers to catch the ball and to beat their guy and get open. Do you think the man coverage and the 8 in the box would have worked if BYU's recievers had beaten their guys and got open? Do you think that Heaps could have completed passes to guys that were being blanketed by AF's db's? I don't buy the argument that Riley is physically unable or smart guys like Bronco, Anae and Doman would have put him at the end of the bench by now.

In my opinion it is true. Coaches are not infallable. How else do you explain Tim Coach, Ty Detmer (in Cleveland), Alex Smith, and the umpteen thousand other draft picks that failed inthe NFL? They are however experienced and take into consideration possiblities. Especially when options are limited. It's not like they can go out and trade for another QB or bring one up from the minors (d-II). They will see if he can make the adjustments. These are his first real games as BYU's QB. I am not so sure he will be able to.

As for his tools, I don't care if the QB can throw the ball over the mountains, if he doesn't have faith in his arm (for good reason-he throws a lot of ducks) or patience in the pocket he will not succeed at BYU. As for our WR's, they are in a difficult spot. Riley is checking two reads at most and then tucking and looking or a hole. That does not give the WR's enough time to get away from the D. You give a QB 3-5 secs in the pocket and somebody will get open. Riley was being given the time but he glanced at a couple of reads, figured they were not open and took off, or at least tried to, right into the arms of the waiting D.

The difference with Heaps is that he has "pocket presence". He is able to stay in the pocket as long as possible then fades to one side or the other all the while with his eyes downfield. Riley is looking down too, at the ground around him for a hole to run through. FSU will tell the tale-that I am certain of. If he ends up with as many runs as pass attempts he will have proven himself incapable of running the BYU passing offense. He would be a better fit at AF or GA Tech.

There are moronic fans that were calling for Nelson last year. But its not just BYU fans. I hear it from every fan base, they are always calling for a back-up or saying their star sucks after one bad play. One would just hope that there are less of these types in the BYU fan base. I think I hope in vain.
