I am really troubled by his comments on KSL from last night. I just don't understand why, if we're going to concede 2010 as a transition year with very little expectations for success (8-4 is this team's and system's absolute cieling, with a likelyl 5-7 floor), why not use it as a chance to get Heaps ready for 3 years of play? Bronco, IMHO, is insuring that Heaps isn't ready to go next year by not getting him the practice snaps and game experience that he needs. I fear that he might run with this system throughout spring, next fall and into 2011.

So far, I think Heaps hasn't performed well in games. People have blamed it on his recievers and JJ fumbling but the bottom line is, he hasn't performed well in games. The way I see it is; as he performs better and starts leading drives down the field into scores (whether they be field goals or TD's), he will see the field more and Riley will see it less. I really don't think that Bronco is intentionally holding him back, I think they want him to be more trustworthy on the field before they give him more reps. This is my opinion, since I am not in the coaches meetings.

Jake is bringing it and he's being screwed by our elite receiving corps so far. Give him a chance to get in a rhythm just as Nelson has been given the same. That's all anyone is saying. We're not at apples to apples yet.

Yeah, he's bringing it....half of the time. The other half of the time, he's been throwing to the wrong team. As far as the receiving corps, Nelson has shown an ability to move the chains and score with the same receivers, so blaming the receivers isn't going to get you very far.

Starting last night I got to thinking, mostly thanks to this thread, that maybe giving Heaps a RS next season wouldn't be a bad idea.

Then who starts in 2011, nelson? do you really think he is better in 2011 than heaps or lark or even munns at that point?

He hasn't really done much to distinguish himself so far other than throwing pretty spirals to either the other team or no one.

I don't think you answered my question.

I would rather struggle under a Heaps-led offense and get him ready for next year by giving him the majority (90%+) of practice and game snaps than struggle under a Nelson-led offense where Jake is not getting enough snaps to prepare him sufficiently.

Nelson is not the guy to lead this team to great championship football. Heaps can be, but only if given significant, meaningful time to prepare. If they go with Nelson like they have been, then he's not going to be ready and game-proven until October of 2012.

BTW, Utah got their freshman QB ready by about week 8 or 9 without much game experience and limited practice snaps and it worked - so quit worrying about Heaps not getting a chance to be ready in 2011. Bronco clearly stated that he thinks Heaps will be ready in 2010 but is not ready yet.

BTW, Utah is very glad they have Cain and Wynn both ready to play because Cain was Abel last week and next week and Wynn wasn't and isn't. Hopefully the investment, risk, and sacrifice made this early season will ensure we have a back-up QB ready should we need one. Nelson is taking a pounding for the cause, and he is at risk of injury. With OL play like we got Saturday, imagine the "fan" outrage if Heaps was taking the pounding, trying to make something out of nothing, and got a shoulder separation on his throwing side. Something for all the supposed "long-term" thinkers to ponder.

We don't run Utah's offense-but we're headed that way, but with the wrong type of players. They could not run ours.

For either QB to thrive, they need protection like they got in week 1. Our center got worked by AFA and that resulted in 6 false starts, 1 illegal snap, and pressure on the QB with a 3 or 4 man rush. Matt Reynolds was sick. A little more time to throw gives more opportunity to check down and more time to get open before you start hearing footsteps. I would also bet that BYU will be less likely to be drawn into false starts if FSU tries ti imitate the snap count.

Good comment on the protection. I think it will be better this week.

False Starts ---I think that depends on who is playing. Heaps didn't have any false starts during the AF game. It was an issue with Riley which needs to be corrected for the FSU game. Does anyone know what the ratio of false starts our offense had during Washington? I was just wondering if the issue is just the one game or if there's a trend going between both game. Pretty hard to move the ball when you're tacking 5 yards on.

All the false starts were when riely was in because nobody knew what the hell he was doing or going to do. his fault but mainly the coaches fault. coaches screwed up big time just like they are screwing up with a two qb system. just pick one, even if its riley.

Better than mailing it in for 2 years and not using the time to get Jake ready. If the W/L is going to be the same (I think we'll win more under Jake than with Riley trying to beat 8-9 guys with his legs) and we're not redshirting Jake, then why the heck not?

First of all false that all the false starts came when Nelson was in. Second, how do you purport to know what was causing the false starts? Was the false start with Heaps because nobody knew what he was going to do?

There were four false start called when Nelson was in--one out of every 12 snaps.

There was one false start called when Heaps was in--one out of 10 snaps.

It's like being in the twilight zone reading Sno, FDBTR, and Hawking. Riley had a whole half to himself where he was exposed but that's not enough to judge him on. However, Jake's on and off series for 1 1/2 games is enough to tell us that all he does is throw picks.

Yet it's okay to judge Nelson off of the one-half where the coaches admit they didn't call the right gameplan and ignore the success he's had when they've done it right?

What IS the right gameplan for Riley?

Especially down 2 touchdowns late in the 3rd against a ball-control run based offense. Oh also, Air Force is playing a 4-3, and taking away the run.

Wow, go to Orlando for 5 days for biz, and come back to the same stuff.

Listen, Riley Nelson is limited as a QB, will not help BYU get to anything better than 8-4. If BYU is going to have a "down" year, may as well groom the young kid with MUCH greater upside. USC did it last year, and now their offense looks potent. BYU needs to give Heaps the same shot Riley just got last week to see if he can do better. End of story. Riley was crap the 2nd half last week, and AFA gave every team BYU plays the blueprint on how to shut him down. Gap blits the run lanes and dare him to throw. He won't. Only people who fail to see it are family members and close friends. And if you think Riley gives BYU the best shot to beat FSU, you did not see OU dismantle FSU with the pass. That is not Nelson. He can't do it.

Lawboy. Since you were gone the new devleops out of the riley camp are that Heaps has done nothing to show he can succeed and riley has done enough at this point to come to the conclusion that not only is he better than heaps right now (two games into his true freshman season) but he will be better than heaps, lark and munns next year as well. He has played so well he should now be the starter in 2011 with the mediocre talent of heaps, lark, and Munns behind him.

I like Riley. I think the coaches can put a gameplan together that will help him succeed. He however has a long way to go before he can be a great quarterback in the byu system.

Me thinks need another game to obsess about.

by the way, heaps was making throws in the uw game that not many qbs in the nfl are making right now. The kid has amazing talent. To not give credit to that is disingenuous in my opinion.

Interesting thought on family members. I wonder how many family and friends of Riley we have in here trying to make sway the opinion? Talk about your conflict of interest.

I know of one member of Nelson's family and one of Heaps' family that post on here. Nelson's relative has to date steered clear of the QB threads. The Heaps family has not been so hesitant.

MissouriCoug's comment that Sno is going "Twilight Zone" here aren't too far off. Is Sno married to Nelson's sister or something? "Why play Heaps more, he only completed 2 passes against Air Force, while Nelson was good enough to start the entire 2nd half!" Spin like that (my words) is just crazy-talk, not realistic at all, and the vast majority see that. Nelson is not a BYU QB. Nelson cannot run a BYU offense. BYU coaches tried their best to find a scheme that Nelson could run successfully and failed utterly. The Nelson experiment is OVER at this point, while the "Heaps experiment" has yet to begin.

It hasn't begun because he hasn't earned it. As poorly as Nelson played against AFA, he was still the better of the two quarterbacks on the day. You forgot that Heaps had a shot to earn playing time in the second quarter, he took that shot and handed it to Reggie Rembert.

Are you talking of "air attack?"

His only post I remember was to confirm that they weren't moving after "camp lefty" starting bringing up rumors about Heaps leaving if he didn't get the starting job, and how we didn't need that type of player anyways...

what is the difference between a pick and a fumble? I think the difference may have been riley's fumble resulted in an air force touchdown if i remember correctly.

There hasn't been equal share to judge both of them on. Riley has had more opportunities and once he was given the full reign for a full half, he made nothing of it. Give Heaps that entire half and you'd have seen better results. Unfortunately that can't be proven because he has not been given a full half to call his own yet. I don't know what games sno was watching, it really has me confused. Equality has not been shown, once Nelson fumbled shouldn't he have been yanked?

I might be the only one, but I seriously doubt the interception had anything to do with Heaps sitting out the second half. I figure the coaches realized that the front 4 of airforce was completely destroying our oline and rather than let Heaps get creamed they let Nelson, who had a chance to move the ball with his feet to take the punishment.

Nelson hasn't earned it either. As the veteran, he was outplayed by a freshman in both fall and spring camp. And the team looks worse with him as a QB, and better with Heaps as a QB.

Nelson was given a ton of rope against Air Force, and he hung himself with it. That's not even including the lost fumble that led to Air Force points (of course, Jake's INT led to NO Air Force points). At least with Heaps in the team could consistently move the ball with JJ, whether Anae chose to do so or not. You're acting completely blind and myopic here.

Edited because I'm done with this debate.
I
i am just saying
As a former player; I just can't believe that anyone who watches with a critical eye can't see that Jake is by far the superior quarterback for the BYU system. I watched these guys throw for weeks before the season started and it isn't even close.

Let me be clear that I love Riley as a football player. However, Jake is so much further ahead with talent that it is almost laughable. Bronco might not remember, but Ty Detmer through multiple interceptions in his first game against Wyoming on ESPN and we lost the game. It didn't bother the kid one bit and it didn't send the coaches into a panic talking about "trust".

Why didn't they recruit Riley out of high school? It is simple, he didn't fit the system. He was the same tough nosed, winner who led the nation in touchdowns. However, when he graduated highschool, he couldn't make the throws needed to fit the system which is why they invested in Lark. They recruited Riley later because they had not signed Heaps yet and the only QB's in the program worth a darn was Lark a freshman and Munns a freshman. Riley is the INSURANCE policy.

Bronco, I absolutely love you for what you have done for our school and I will support you even though you are making a huge mistake on this one. I'm not sure why you are being so flighty on this and so stubborn. Give the kid at least a quarter at Florida State and start preparing him for what has to be the decision later in the season. It is inevitable.

I'm just saying.
