Talent had little to do with the fiasco on the field this afternoon.

Talent has everything to do with it!

If this was TIC, I apologize for not getting it.

If you're serious, we should explore that logic. If Texas does indeed recruit great talent, then it would stand to reason that it would be difficult for incoming freshmen to break into the rotation, UNLESS that talent was superior to the already high talent level in place.

Similarly, if we recruit poor talent, it would give us as much reason, if not more, to rotate in our younger talent. If these new recruits are equally talented as those that stand in front of them, then there is no need to play them. But if they are better, and a place like Texas can find room for kids in a similar situation, then would should see more freshmen, and more often.

That's how I understood your first post.

Ok - how many are starting and how many are playing in garbage time?

I haven't followed Texas closely, but who have they played and especially on the road.

I see Oklahoma opening up with USU, FSU and AFA at home - and have to wonder what we r doing opening against UW at home and then AFA and FSU on the road.

Both BYU and Oklahoma probably didn't expect AFA to be this good and probably thought USU would be awful when the schedule was made. We should be making the Logies come to Provo every year.

It wasn't sarcasm.

1) There should be little to no doubt that a school like Texas recruits much better talent than BYU. Period.

2) It's probably a mix of the two things you said. Texas lost a lot of good players last year (hence the 12 starting freshmen this year), but at the same time, it wouldn't surprise me if some of their new players are just flat out better.... ORRRRRRR you left out the option that perhaps Texas just wants to build up their freshmen, and are putting more stock into their future, while realizing that what they have now may still be enough to have a great season.

Obviously we don't have the power the other teams do to be able to play more than half their games at home, that's just how it goes. OU didn't play USU at home - and also, home or not, those were three moderately tough to tough games, and OU won them all. Home doesn't = victory (hence, BYU last season).

Texas just played Texas Tech @ TTech last night and managed to win the game.

I am still having a difficult time believing Texas is starting 12 True Freshmen against quality opponents. U guess I am calling BS till someone verifies that. Playing 12 is way different than starting 12.

I don't want to get negative but as pertains to us, we are not seeing like playing time for our frosh because they are overrated, coaches are too stubborn to play them, or coaches are not good enough to get them able to use their tallent at D-1 level. Is there other explanations?

Coaches have a philosopy. If it is very successful (see last 5 years) then it is difficult to change that philosophy. I still think we can have a very successful year but it is going to take a lot of sacrifice and hard work to do so. This year just happens to be a "real" building year. We have had them in the past however, we have generally had a QB that was ready to take the reigns and lead the team. This year is the exception. Riley evidently was not that QB because he never made Bronco think, "maybe we should redshirt Heaps". Heaps, being the true freshman is not in that position as he is not only fighting against someone with more experience but also the philosophies of the coaching staff. BYU has never had a true freshman start the season opener at QB. That did not change this year.

On defense we had some major revamping to do as far as players go. We took one of the harderst working and most talented NT's to ever play at BYU and moved him to DT. We still have not completely settled the ILB situation. Our CB's have played very well against the pass but have struggled somewhat against the run and our safeties have struggled mightily against the run.

So the way I see it, this year has been an eye opener because in years past when we lost so many valuable cogs, people have stepped up and caused there to not be a drop in the quality of both the offense (Beck-Hall, Harline-Pita, Brown-Unga,Collie-Pita &George) nor the defense (Jensen-Poppinga/Staffieri, Kehl-Nixon/Clawson,). It just seems we have not had the "new" full time starters maintain the same level as those from the previous year.

On the bright side I have seen a lot of youth (fr and soph) playing considerable minutes. I guess this should be expected however since about two thirds of the traveling team are underclassman. I think this year will be a struggle, but I am very excited for the years to come. The only drop off or at least non-increase I think we might have in the next couple of years may be at CB.

Italics used the word STARTING above - apparently jumping - like others may have, to that conclusion from your post. We have played quite a few freshmen and will probably play even more freshmen if we ever get a commanding lead on an opponent. Maybe in 3 or 4 weeks we will see such an opportunity.

Can anyone list the freshmen we have played this year. We have played them in previous years as well. It is rare at QB as is rotating QBs - generally done out of desperation IMHO - which is why almost nobody does it and even fewer when the supporting cast is also inexperienced.

Jake, Kyle, Cody?, any number of tightened who are all freshmen, others? Don't forget special teams - that will bump up the numbers - I assume Texas numbers include special teams - no?

Even if we do not have a lot of freshman playing(10?), we have a lot of guys who were very inexperienced before this season began. And at key positions for us.

Of course, if we talked better the last 2 games, the conversations would be different. Tackling has been really poor for 2 weeks running now. Seniors as bad as freshman.

Hi guys, don't mean to be trolling. I just like to see what others are saying and promise to always be respectful on your board. Regarding the Freshmen starting for Texas here is the deal:

Bottom line is we have 12 to 15 TRUE Freshmen that are contributing significant minutes. There are 2 that are way ahead of schedule and those are DE Jackson Jeffcoat (thanks to his Dad's training and gene pool) and WR Mike Davis who was an LSU commit but once Texas offered he jumped at it thank goodness. The other true Freshmen that are making huge impacts are DE Reggie Wilson, LB Jordan Hicks (#1 player from Ohio last yr who we thankfully took from Buckeyes) and WR Darius White. Man, I wish I could include a RB in the conversation but thank goodness for us Malcolm Brown enters the picture next year.

Mack and the Texas program know this is somewhat of a rebuilding yr for us and according to many insiders, this past recruiting class may be the best ever to come into Texas. So to make a long story short, Mack wanted to feed these freshmen to the wolves to get them ready for the next 2 to 3 yrs. Rumor has it, once Gilbert graduates the reigns of the program are going to Def. Coord. Will Muschamp. Also, frankly, some of these Freshmen are so good that they surpassed many of the upperclassmen on the depth chart.

I hope this helps and hey, keep your heads up this season guys. Every top notch program like yourselves goes through cycles and I know for sure that we'll be playing a much better and experienced Cougar team in Austin next year.

Best wishes,

Steven
