Per the Salt Lake Tribune blog:

"He called the system of playing a bunch of players "problematic" because first-stringers were not getting the volume of plays they needed to get to execute effectively and get in a rhythm."

I think a majority of us on this blog, myself included, have been saying this all along. I also have pointed out on many occasions that this should have been the standard for QBs from the get go. The more players play together and know who the leaders are, the more cohesive they can be. I think Bronco and crew were spreading themselves too thin and it is now haunting them. Hopefully we can put this wishy-washy crap behind us, and start playing more consistent.

Hence the topic "uh, duh" I posted earlier. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see this. Bronco seems to just be picking up on it. That is one thing bronco does well. once he see what is not working he fixes it. that is why i expect us to keep getting better from this point going forward. what he doesn't do as well is anticipate the problem and fix it before it manifests itself. he is more of just keep giong until something doesn't work. then fix it.

I think Bronco maybe gave his players too much credit this offseason when they decided to go with the two-headed monster. His philosophy of building mature players who can execute at a high level with fewer reps, less practice time etc. has worked well in the past, but this concept was the breaking point. In the comments he made leading up to the Washington game (e.g. "Will the 2 QB approach tear the team apart? I don't think so. Will it bring the team closer together? Hopefully.") make it look like he thought BYU was a unique place with a unique type of player who could make the concept work through selflessness. While the character of the players might keep a cohesive locker room under dual-leadership, that character only takes you so far on the field of play, and hopefully this lesson is getting learned.

It sounds like it judging from his remarks today. Bronco is an interesting character.

I think Bronco for the last several years has vast overestimated the level of player leadership he's had on the teams. I think the team would be well served if Bronco were much of a leader. It is nice to have young men develop their leadership skills, but I think Bronco should be a little more hands on to some degree.

Anybody know what goes on in the BYU locker room before games, halftime, after games? Do any of the coaches get after players? failures? mistakes? is there any emotion? or is it more like a priesthood meeting?

It's always bugged me that Bronco (and other coaches) talk about making adjustment at halftime. Why the heck aren't adjustments made after the first series, or the first quarter, or whenever needed?

I think it was telling that Heaps came out at halftime determined to drive the field and score. But Jimbo Fisher screamed at his team about defensively shutting BYU down. Then a couple more passes are dropped, the QB is hurried, and it's a three and out--and probably the game was over at that point. I'm just curious if the offensive coaches were talking about how to get receivers open, and about getting somebody in there who can catch a pass. I also think I might have lined up the tight ends and threatened to execute them (not really) if they didn't get open and didn't catch everything thrown to them. And the next tight end that has a pass go through his hands and hit him in the helmet, gets his scholarship pulled.

All I know is that guys who play for Bronco love him. Absolutely love him. That is enough for me.

The 2nd half issues last game were down to the Oline scrambling. They struggled. Matt Reynolds being out the whole 2nd half really hurt us, and limited our overall effectiveness. It is obvious to see that he is THAT good and important for this team this year. The guys got steamrolled often after that and struggled as a unit. As we have seen from scrimmages, the back up O-line guys have a ways to go yet.

I think Bronco was hoping that giving many guys time to play would allow position battles to work themselves out, and for the most part, they have not. Guys have not separated themselves with great play, and that is an issue. After 3 games, you'd think we'd know who our best TE would be, but we don;t because none have elevated to take the job. Same with ILBs. They have all played well in spurts, bad in others. Same with Safety. And of course, at QB. Fact is, the coaches are now going to just have to pick a guy, give him the job and the reps, and hope the kid takes it and runs with it. If not, the back up gets more chances.

At this point, I put equal share on players because they have not forced the coaches to play them in key positions due to sporadic play. Guys may want it, but they have not elevated themselves yet as far as I can tell. That is why Bronco thinks it is a season long process. We are really young is key places for this team.

Funny, I have heard former players (it may have been on deep shades of blue) say they were envious of the offense because they didn't have to have meetings with Bronco in them. I think he has fire. I don't think that meetings are like Elders quorum.
