I can't get too excited about this because although Chambers is tough, he doesn't have any hands, he's is not a Pitta or George that had glue on their hands. Still, Chambers was to slow to play wide receiver, so hope this works out.

I'm disappointed that all our great, young, all-american TEs couldn't cut the mustard and become a star along with Heaps and JJ. We'll see how this all plays out. Maybe Chambers will realize this is what he was born to do, and just be a stud there.

Agreed. I don't know how anyone calls this move "brilliant" or "great" because OC is a below average receiver. How is his ability to block DB's going to help us in the run game? Defenses can assume a release anytime he's out there which means no play action unless the D is just plain braindead. The only thing I can see as to how this benefits us is that perhaps this moves forces Jacobsen back outside where he should be anyway, not Ashworth, who has been nothing but invisible on offense. We'll see how it plays out but this all smells like desperation rather than a positive solution.

It's not like they died. We had TEs (besides OC) playing snaps against FSU, they just weren't thrown the ball.

A guy like Wilson could get mixed more into the offense (especially in the Blue Zone), or a guy like Holt could just become a hulk of a blocking Tight End. Either way, they still have 3 years left to play after this one (4 in Sampson's case).

But does the average LB have the speed to deal with OC in coverage? If not then when Chambers is in the game the D will have to go nickel or run the risk of the mismatch getting exploited. And if they do go nickel then OC has already taken care of the LB that got subbed out and he can block the nickel back for the run.

Chambers had a safety lined up on him v. FSU and was open on most plays. A few times, he took the guy deep over the middle and beat the guy--badly--but Heaps could not see it. I bet the coaches see it on film though, and Jake will too. Bet we go deep to OC from the slot at least 1 time Saturday. We really need to attack the middle better with the passing game.

I like this move a lot, even if it takes a while for Chambers to get going. Having a quality tight end is import both for BYU's passing system but also for the development of young QBs. It seemed to me that FSU was in a lot of man under coverage a lot because they knew their corners could handle our receivers. In man under, the TEs and RBs are covered by linebackers and safeties, which should be a mismatch. Heaps will benefit immensely from a TE who can get open--and I think Chambers could have a bright future in this position if he fully embraces it.

If you look back at BYU's most successful first-year starting QBs, most of them had quality TEs to throw to:

1980 McMahon - Brown (1,009 yards)

1982 Young - Hudson (928 yards)

1984 Bosco - Mills (1,023 yards)

1989 Detmer - Smith (1,090 yards)

1995 Sarkisian - Lewis (456 yards), Mili (440 yards)

2001 Doman - Jolley (496 yards), Nead (266 yards)

2007 Hall - Pitta (813 yards), George (200 yards), So'oto (124 yards)

And now Chambers just got suspended for two games...puts these plans on hold

Interesting Jay Drew tweets just coming out on this. Sounds like the 7 TEs we have all got their panties in a wad over this move, because it made them feel not good enough. I hate to break it to them, but they--as a group--HAVE NOT BEEN GOOD ENOUGH. This unit needs to toughen up, and just got out and get it done in practice and show they want the job. Getting butt hurt over OC getting their reps is not the way to go, and makes them sound petty, immature and not tough enough to just compete for it. They better step up, because they have sucked as a unit games 1-3.

Decision to move Chambers to TE also did not sit well with many players; Basically sent message to young TEs that they weren't good enough. 9 minutes ago reply

I agree with Lawboy. Get over yourselves TEs, if you had been good enough this move wouldn't have been made. You have shown nothing on the field to warrant getting your panties in a wad.

If you heard Chad Lewis talk on the Bronco Mendenhall show last night with Wrubell, he put it all in perspective for this group. I found it interesting that Chad was working with the O over the summer as a volunteer, non-staff guy and saw the potential with the TE group, but said there was no "Pitta or George" yet in this group. But that they could get there with hard practice. Bronco then said "will you tell them to hurry" to Chad, which I thought was funny. They both went on to talk about how jobs are earned in practice, and this groups needs to figure that out.
