My point is this. Bronco is in his 6th season as head coach. This is his best recruiting class. Never before has he had this caliber of young talent come into the system. He has never been faced with a QB controversy before. I think BYU fans just need to cut him some slack as this is the first time he has been faced with all of these issues. Nobody gets it perfect the first time and based off of his comments I will bet that he has learned from it.

Bronco isn't Lavell, he hasn't been coaching for 30 years. There is still a learning curve with Bronco and that is to be expected. Just have a little faith in him, the man is 50-17 after all.

Agreed, this is his best recruiting class. And unfortunately the first year is usually way too early to start playing and evaluating any class.

You are incorrect though. This is second QB controversy. He had one prior to 2007. And like this one, he didn't make a decision, but had one made for him with Cade Cooper's injury. Maybe had Cooper not gotten hurt, Bronco would have learned that he needed to pick a QB. The only difference is we would have already had the conversations we're currently having.

Bronco isn't Lavell. In fact, I think that he's a better coach. I think Lavell to a certain degree was very overrated. The game had passed him by (he should have retired after 1996). He stopped recruiting at the end. He made a living off of awful WAC teams. The MWC is greatly superior than the WAC of the 70s and 80s. I personally don't think Lavell could have had the same success if he took over next year.

Bronco is indeed 50-17 and rarely makes the same mistake twice. He may have steep learning curves. But he seems to really learn from that. The future of BYU is EXTREMELY bright.

LaVell's staff in the late 70's and early 80's was AWESOME. The current staff still has room to grow in that regard. Not even a close comparison just yet. Let's hope it becomes one, though.

One reason it was so awesome was there was up and coming talent that only stayed for a few years before going on for bigger and better things. There was a demand for BYU assistants. I don't see that same demand for our coaches now. Hence my opinion that Bronco is the better coach - although it'd be tough to argue he has better assistants at this point.

Guys, we have to put two and two together. The other week Bronco revealed the decision to go with Nelson in the AFA game was Anae and Doman's decision. Clearly, Bronco was giving his assistants more decision power than they probably deserved. We know of Doman's man-crush on Nelson and Doman's preference for a option QB.

Bronco coming out and admitting a mistake is as much an effort to shield his assistants as it is to take the blame. Yes, he's the head coach and it's up to him whether he's going to micro or macro manage his assistants, but he's admitted he's made a mistake while at the same time falling the sword for his assistants. They owe him.

Everything I've heard puts Doman in Heaps' corner and Anae in Nelson's....it's been a point of (further) friction between the two since August. Part of the problem may have been Bronco trying to teach his staff a lesson in working out their own squabbles without constantly making him intervene. Makes some of his comments after AFA and FSU make a bit more sense, e.g. "I'm closer to having an opinion."
