Michael Reed or O'Neill Chambers?

I wasn't on the board back when Michael Reed played, but I was watching the 2006 highlight video a few nights ago and was wondering if the board was as much in love with Michael Reed as they are O'Neill Chambers. I am not trying to stir up a debate of controversy, I am just curious to know how everyone feels.

Besides the obvious physical and position similarities their careers are following the same path: player with talent, but never the QBs first choice.

And if you had to pick between the two, who do you choose?

Mike Reed. He caught the ball and stayed out of trouble. Win Win

Reed. If my memory is serving me well Reed had less of an attitude towards his teammates and less arrogance but was just as tough on the field towards the opponent. Both are great blocking receivers. Both are tall and lean, similar speed. Reed made some spectacular catches and I firmly believe that his injury in 08 really is what made that season do a tail spin as the offense fell out of rhythm.

I'm not giving up on OC and keep him in my prayers. He's a good kid and I sure would like to think it was the prayers of people who cared about me and wanted the best for me as a 21 year old kid that helped me on my way. He could very well turn out to be better than Reed but only time will tell. Stick it out OC, this is the place for you if you can see past the confusion.

O'neill. He's still got eligibility left!

Way to live in the moment.

Better than living in the past?

There were a couple points early on when Reed considered transferring. He stayed (oviously) and went on to have a decent career. Time for OC to do the same! Come on, OC, we're rooting for you!

I'm sorry but nobody knows what OC got in trouble for. Plenty of straight arrows have been suspended for games at BYU for one reason or another: Manase Tonga, Fui Vakapuna, Ben Criddle, Terrance Hooks, Ian Dulan, Cole Miyahira, Fahu Tahi and I think even Nate Meikle had to sit one game once.

What's more, I was a huge proponent of Mike Reed and was giving him props when nobody else would. He was a sure thing for a third down conversion. But really there is no comparison, OC is just better than Mike in every way. He's bigger, faster and stronger. Clearly some of ya'll don't like his "stronger" personality but why then weren't you critical of other similar players like Max Hall, Austin Collie, Curtis Brown, Brady Poppinga, etc?

Yes, OC needs to do some serious soul searching to decide if this is really the best situation for him. But like Sikahema pointed out, guys like Kozlowski and Mahe actually turned something negative into something positive and went out on a high note. Plus, if OC wanted to transfer to another D1 program, he'd have to sit a year. That seems far worse than a couple of games. OC is a good kid, you don't have to look any farther than his own mother to see that's the case. He's young and impetuous and makes mistakes but what kid doesn't? And as far as expectations go, apparently some of ya'll had far greater expectations than even the scouting services had for him. He was only a 3* out of HS for crying out loud. It's not like he was expected to be the saviour of the program. He was a very talented prospect with good potential just like most of our recruits. Let the kid play and make mistakes just like any other player. If he never played another down for BYU, he would have been worth the scholie he was given IMO.

Chambers talked himself up - both before coming here - and after. Lest we forget he is the reason Freshman don't talk to the media. I don't know if it's buying into hype, or taking a kid at his word. Like the KR promise he made for the first year.

Again, he wasn't even 18 when he made those comments. And most kids with his kind of offers talk way more than he did/does. I know BYU doesn't get many like him but no fan of any other top 25 team in the country would bat an eyelash at anything Chambers has done or said. For once, let's just remember that he is not an RM or even of our faith. So why do we expect him to be just like everyone else on our team? It could be a lot worse and he could be getting arrested like one of 30 players on the roster of Florida, a school that offered him by the way.

Ah, but are those comments a thing of the past? Or is this continued behavior and comments part of the reason he is being suspended...

OC is bigger, stronger, and faster than mike reed was ..... butttttt he is less consistent and less effective. So you do the math.

This is one of those usless thread exercises that mean nothing. Reed was a good contributor to the Y's Football program when he was here. I loved watching him & what he did - the "Silent Assassin." Solid.

O'Neill is a different flavor. Talks more. More confrontation on the field. Exudes confidence. Promises the moon. I like him. He brings energy & heart. He believes in himself & "get's after it." I wish he would hang onto some of the passes he has dropped - but - it's a growing process. O'Neill did not arrive a finished poduct. He has grown & continues to grow.

Bottom line - it's not Chambers vs. Reed - which one. Both have been good for the Coug program. Both are better personally for being @ the Y. Both have been solid contributors. I like both Chambers & Reed a lot.

I like to meet O'Neill someday - love to shoot the breeze w/ OC over an In-N-Out double double, "animal style."

That's livin' large!!! LOL!!

I met Mike Reed on campus a few times back in the day, he was always very gracious and down to earth. But Reed almost transferred after his initial year at BYU. Hopefully OC can continue to grow up and contribute.

Reed seemed like an unsung hero most of the time but I do seem to remember some grumbling that the ball didn't come his way enough and I do seem to recall a drop off for part of his senior year re consistency, reliability, and productivity.

Maybe drops occur when a pass comes to a player that is used to not seeing one come his way.

All in all Reed was more reliable as a go to guy and Chambers has sporadically shown more big play potential.

They both contributed. Reed contributed more - but he is done and OC has nearly 2 years to catch up or even surpass.
