For being the #1 pro-style QB in the 2010 class, and listening to all the hype, he simply looks like any other freshman.

He'll get better but he is far behind what I was expecting to see.

Not sure what freshman you have been seeing but he looks better than just about any true freshman drop back passer that I have seen in quite some time.

I'll reserve judgement for a few more weeks but I can think of one right now that was better.

There's a few. I think we are seeing what some of us were saying in December when he committed--yes, he's the #1 kid coming out, yes, he's probably one of the top 5 most talented QBs BYU has brought in, but he's still not a Barkley, Stafford, Sanchez, etc. type talent, so to lump those expectations on him is entirely unfair.

It turns out going against our #1 defense was not the best of preparations for Heaps we had hoped it would be. ;)

I understand what you're saying. I didn't lump any expectations on him and I'm not happy or unhappy about his performance thus far.

Once again, all I meant is that for all the hype, his "press conference at Iggy's, the talk about him coming to Provo in January was going to be tanatamount to having a red shirt year of experience and put him way ahead of a "normal" frosh QB, other players coming to BYU just to play with him, not to mention the excitement about him on this board I thought he would come in and make more of an impact immediately.

The kid might turn out to be a stud. He could be BYU's 2nd Heismann winner for all I know. But right now he doesn't look like all that and I thought he'd at least show flashes of it right away.

Heaps would make a good QB at New Mexico, or Idaho, after Enderle leaves. Sorry about your loss.

Don't watch much college football?

enough to have this opinion.

The only pass I've seen him complete with regularity is the 0-12 yard crossing route or dump routes to the flat. I haven't seen him hit a single deep ball and he has not demonstrated that he can consistantly throw an out either.

I'm not ripping the kid. True freshmen usually don't succeed but the way he was hyped I thought he'd be better sooner. That's all I'm saying.

He has thrown a few very nice deep balls that should have been caught. As for the outs, didn't you watch the game last night. He was hitting guys in the flat. As for touch, he was putting the ball in some good spots where just the WR could get it. A few out of bounds but that is just a repetition thing.

There is one lesson that I'm surprised Heaps hasn't learned yet (and that Doman isn't all over this with our newbie QB). When the pocket starts to collapse Heaps is retreating backward and often throwing off his back foot or simply lengthening the field way too much. If he would just step up through the collapsing pocket he'd have a shorter field, better footing and a clear view of the receivers. The few times he's done this he's been way more accurate.

Time to step up Heaps.

Go Cougs!

I'll say this. Heaps looks good. Not great. About what I expected out of a true freshman facing some good teams. He hasn't impressed me with accuracy. But mechanics and decision making have been pretty solid. He'll be good. But not for a few more games (at least).
