Yeah, who cares that BYU has experienced the most wins than in any other 5 year period of BYU football history.

True. But Good recruiting, weak schedules, and Bronco probably influence that WAY more. I'm with lawboy on needing crossing routes and mid-intermediate routes.

It may come as a suprise to you but Bronco has done very little with the offense other then make a suggestion or 2 over the years. He has turned this thing completely over to Robert Anae. Having said that, he always takes the blame when things don't go good. Just like he has with the 2 qb system.

I too get frustrated when our vanilla offense doesn't execute. This does not mean you dump your system and its coordinator after three losses.

I trust that these coaches are better at football than we give them credit for.

the offense is going to stay vanilla for a while too. You just can't expect a true freshman QB to be given the entire offense after a start or two. They tried to keep the playbook intact by running 2 qb's that failed and one of the qb's got hurt so now we are stuck with trying to ease a guy into the offense playing against Gary Anderson and Rocky Long defenses that gave guys like Max hall fits. I hate to be a rainy cloude but I am looking at reality right now.

I'm sorry, they tried to keep the playbook INTACT by running two qb's? Did a Riley set look like BYU foortball to you? More like INVENT a new playbook, which is what they did. They spent a precious amount of prep time looking for ways to keep Riley on the field, and now we are seeing the drawbacks of that. It was bar none the stupidest idea ever to change our offense from one that has been tops in the nation for the last 10 years. If the qb doesn't fit your offense - you don't change the offense and past years recruiting efforts - changing the playbook. You find a qb that works. Especially if you have one in the stable that just needs to be groomed. Heaps is missing right now, but he is a prototypical BYU quarterback, and we obviously see that he should have gotten more reps. Especially if Riley had a shoulder injury the whole time...

I didn't mean that they were going to have Riley running all the BYU plays, I meant that they wanted keep a complexity in the offense that using a Freshman QB would not give them. I never said that it worked, in fact I hated the 2 qb system but that is what was happening. It going to take time. This offense is not very good right now but next year, it is going to be much better.

This is always an interesting discussion because the fans really do not comprehend as much as the coaching staff on a play-by-play basis. A good example of this was our efforts to chase Norm Chow out with pitchforks and torches...

However, having said that...I do think the coaching should be accountable by the outcome of their choices.

Choices for which Anae should be accountable:

(1) Playing Riley Nelson over Jake Heaps

(2) Initiating a two quarterback system that basically resulted in both quarterbacks being unprepared

(3) Slow in-game adjustments...like failing to run the ball against Utah 2008

(4) Sweeping with Kariya on fourth and four...I understand the strategy...but if Kariya is in the game, you DO NOT run that play. COACHING.

(5) Running up the middle on 3rd and 7, when down 17, to set up a field goal(?). If we knew we were going to kick a field goal if we did not get first down...why did we not attempt a first down (Heaps was 5/6 on that drive)?

(6) Why has it taken so long to warm up to DiLugi? I know ball security will be an answer...but which is a better bet...DiLuigi for 7 yards and a 5% fumble or Kariya for 2 yards and a 2% chance of fumble?

I do acknowledge our offense is a work in progress...but some of these things are just puzzling.

Amen to that. USC struggled last year to a 7-5 record with a true freshman QB. (8-5 with bowl win) They also had to replace their whole LB group because they got drafted the year before, and lost a key safety too. Sound familiar? And this year, their offense is really humming. I mean REALLY humming. And it is because their QB is ready to play this year, unlike last year. Sometimes you need a year to build. This is our year.

I knew this would start a big discussion and I honestly don't care if Anae stays or goes. What I want is an OC that doesn't call for a fade pattern 112 times in a game when it never works. I want an OC that knows you call a time out when you are going for it on 4th and 4 and you don't have your guys ready. I want an OC that uses plays that are maximing the strengths of a young QB and minimizing his weakness.

Anae isn't to blame for wide open receivers being missed or dropping balls they should have caught. He is to blame for not managing the offense well.

If he can fix it, great. If not, then get someone who can. Our offense was not managed well on Saturday. Either it is on Anae or Bronco. Since Bronco has turned the reigns over to Anae...

If only we could squeeze Crowton's creativity and aggressiveness into Anae's brain to complement his methodical, disciplined do-the-same-thing-way-too-much offense. I feel that Anae is way too far on the conservative side of play calling, although Crowton's aggressive, cavalier play calling was way more damaging to the team in the long run.

Every once in a while Anae will pull out an amazing call that makes me wonder why the other 95% of the time my toddlers can tell me what the next play will be.

Maybe he took the "intent to decieve" call seriously last year and vowed to never do it again. :D

Crowton was and is a great offensive coordinator. He just could not do the head coaching gig, and keep a team together. Actually, Crowton and Mendenhall would make a great team with their strengths. Bronco is a great PR guy, build a strong program, get the right guys here, and Crowton would use those guys for 60 points a game. Our offense was never better than it was under Crowton, with lavelle's recruits.

Crowton is a Mad offensive genius. Having said that, unfortunately, he confuses his offensive staff sometimes by calling plays that haven't been practiced. That is some of the complaints we have had from his former players at every level. Brandon Doman and Staley obsorbed his playbook and ran it to perfection, the players we had after didn't do so well with it. I still like Anae as an Ocoordinator better then crowton. I wouldn't trade him for Crowton even if Crowton agreed to come back which he never would.

Anae is a good OC, not a great OC. Question that needs to be asked is whether we are okay with being a good, solid program or do we want to be a great program.

Keep in mind, with a roster full of NFL caliber players, we still failed to make a BCS bowl. Yes, prior to this season we've had a great string of 10+ win seasons, but never made it over the hump even with all the talent. What was lacking? It wasn't talent. Given the recruiting circumstances of BYU, you can argue the odds we'll have another team stacked with NFL-grade talent like we did during the Max Hall era are slim.

Even Bronco admits as such by saying what BYU lacks in talent we make up for in execution.

So, unless if you're content with 10-2 seasons with the occasional 8-4 season than you're probably fine with Anae as an OC. If, however, you dream of BYU going undefeated and playing for a national championship under the current BCS regime, than something has to change.

Maybe going independent is a step in the right direction, but at the end of the day, we're still going to need to win all our games.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view) BYU has to manage winning on the field with furthering the mission of the University and Church. BYU simply won't commit to a football 100% first mentality and will therefore always be handicapped.

I mean, and lets be honest, not even USC could do what they did in the 2000s without cheating.

Very good point. So maybe it's more about realigning our personal priorities and just coming to terms that BYU becoming a USC type school just isn't going to happen.

Still, I'm probably more of the type that would trade 3 ho-hum seasons for 1 BCS bowl season. Others prefer the consistent 10 win seasons.

There's no more conference championship to play for, so what are we going to set our sights on?

I'm okay with that, if that is what the coaching staff would tell us. But I constantly hear talk of a BCS game, and NC from the coaches and AD. Don't tell us that and then do something different. And don't blame me for trying to hold you to your word.

I have never once heard Bronco or Holmoe say that the goal is a BCS bowl or NC win. Heaps? Yes, in his press conference. In fact, Holmoe stated expressly that the the move to independence had nothing to do with the BCS.

Looking for national exposure is different from playing in BCS bowls and BCS championships.

Utah is the perfect model for the first point.

BYU is solidly following your second point (with a potential detour during this rebuilding year).

Your third point is a great one. And very interesting to think about.

Really?

When have Bronco and / or Holmoe ever stated that a BCS game is the end game? If anything, their insistence on program maturity and consistency has been maddening for fans that only care about BCS games.

I have heard Bronco say that scheduling patsies is a possible path to the BCS (a'la Boise St and Hawaii), but never that the BCS is the end game.

With all due respect, I don't want to wade through all the "coachspeak" to find something to respond to all of this. It might just be my interpretation of what he has said, and I am open to that idea. However, i have a pretty clear impression in my mind that although that is not preiority numero uno, a BCS game is a clear end goal for them. And I have heard him say "national championship" a few times in the last few years.

Bronco has clearly stated a National Championship is the goal. Under the current system, only way to get there is through the BCS. So yes, the BCS is a clear goal. It has to be one. And starting in 2011, it will be THE goal since there will be no conference title to play for.
