Why aren't receivers catching passes?

DiLuigi dropped one in the endzone that went right through his hands. Okay, I'll give that a pass because he is, afterall, a running back.

I agree with you on everything except that I don't give passes to running backs, because at BYU running backs are also receivers. Some of BYU's most prolific receivers were running backs, Matt Bellini the leader among them.

Don't get me wrong. I wanted his head at the time. But at BYU, Running Backs are supposed to catch it out of the back field and on slants. He dropped an over the shoulder fade that went through his hands. I wouldn't give a receiver a pass for that kind of drop, because they should make those routinely. But I would have to begrudgingly accept that our Running Backs might drop one of those once in a while. Plus, he seemed to be the only one who could catch all of Heaps other passes, so I would cut him a little slack.

Was the drop by Di Luigi on the same drive as Ashworth's dropped TD? If so, then JJ shouldn't have had to catch it because BYU should have already scored.

It was the very next play. Maybe it should have been the 2 pt. conversion, but then JJ catches it after releasing into the flat.

JJ is a great RB, but he's a terrible WR.

In fact, BYU doesn't have a single good receiving back on the team this year, which is where he miss Harvey (and Tonga and Curtis Brown) the most. Quezada is great at pounding the ball but had fumblitis and dropitis in Fall camp too. And what's-his-slow is, you know... garbage.

What's-his-slow?   That has to be one of my all-time favorite nicknames.

Classic.

By the way - what was up with them picking up the flag on the obvious pass interference? The defender grabbed Asworth by the arm before the ball got there.

Ref ruled it was an uncatchable ball since it was thrown to Ashworth. ;)

Maybe Jake needs to drill the ball into the WR check so it sticks in between the shoulder pads. These guys are not looking the ball into their hands (lack of focus) and seem to be distracted by the tight coverage of the DBs. If you can't catch the ball in traffic - you shouldn't be on the field.

So... I was thinking about Kariya's catch-and-run skills against OU last year. He was never a burner, but he definitely looks slowerthis year. And McKay Jacobsen looks MUCH slower this season. Which made me wonder... has anyone on our team ever spent a year in our training program and looked faster?

The only time I've ever seen a BYU upperclassman looks faster than they did as an underclassman is when they hire a professional trainer after they graduate to help them gain speed for the NFL combine. That's it.

Other guys may be slower this year as well compared to last year. Ashworth? Hafoka? Chambers? Braden Brown? Matt Reynolds? Pendleton? Rich? Logan? So'oto?

Maybe "strength and power lifting without speed or flexibility" Omar really does need to be replaced?? :bug: :bug:

An interesting thought. Even Collie seemed faster his freshman year than his post-mission years. Maybe Brady Poppinga, who switched from DE to LB?

I will say that we had a lot of guys bulk up under the program, but that came at the expense of speed. Maybe BYU's training program needs to focus on developing speed in all positions, they'd be more competitive in the long run.
