Bronco and Rocky smoothed things over after Bronco got the head job. Rocky was a bit upset Bronco made a lateral move to BYU for the same position in the same conference, which is usually a no-no, but they are good now. They worked together at Oregon State as well so they have lots of history. And whether BYU rins a 3-3-5, or a 3-4, I think rocky has the right mentality to help BYU out on D, and Bronco trusts him implicitly, which would free Bronco up as e wishes.

Thanks. Would love to see him come, but would he. Seems like a long shot to me.

Sounds like everyone is ready to fire Coach Higgins.(WR Coach). He has to be feeling the heat right now as well, along with Coach Anae. He is a Bronco hire as well, so wonder what he would do. I think the OC would go before the WR Coach, though, and I do not see both getting replaced prior to next year unless one leaves on their own.

In this I have to think Higgins has more heat on him than Anae. Other than Collie our receivers have seemingly struggled for years.

I agree with you hawkwing however, Higgins cannot take credit for Collie as I believe he came to the team with most of is skill set and mentality already engrained by his father. In the same way Domain can't take credit for what Heaps can do at this point.

The problem with Anae is he has no imagination, he's slow to smooth and mold the offense to the players we have, and he rarely is capable of making in-game adjustments. I think Anae is walking a very thin line but Higgins is gone after this season. Anae at this point gets the benifit of the doubt because we've ranked high in all offensive categories in the past. If the offense doesn't improve over the last half of the season he will be gone.

Don't forget that Mendenhall has a strong relationship with Crowton as well, which is why he accepted the position as much as anything. And I agree, it would be a long shot at best. Why would a coach leave San Diego to go to Provo when he doesn't really have ties to Provo anymore??!

Not that I think Rocky wants to be a head coach again, but he would not be in line for the HC position should Bronco leave shortly after hiring Rocky. (I know neither would Hil have been considered, but Hill never has been a head coach and I believe Bronco promoted Hill in part so he would have DC on his resume and eventually get a HC position elsewhere.)

Not saying this in a bad way, but my impression of Long is that he has a pretty large ego. Would that work, going from being Bronco's boss to being his assistant?

Not to Hijack this thread, but can I just say how heart-warming it is to hear names of some of the all-time great route runners in BYU history. Just hearing the names Eric Drage and Ben Cahoon help clear the clouds a little in the stormy sky of present-day BYU football. All is not lost brothers of the message board. These turbulent times will pass and our youngsters will find success. You know who else was fun to watch? Andy Boyce. Tyler Anderson was fun too. So was Bob Capener, the blond bomber...uh oh, really deteriorating now (wrong sport). As you were.

Really? Matt Allen, Zac Collie, Nate Meikle, Mike Reed, Mckay Jacobsen. You thought these guys struggled? I thought these guys were pretty dependable. Not NFL guys, but good college players.

Good points about anea. he is stuck in his ways and strugles to make an offense fit with the skills and talent he has. bad and making adjustment, bad at tailoring plays and schemes to the players he has. starting to wonder if his success is mostly do to the players he has had, namely, hall, pitta, collie, etc. all nfl players.

Long is a lot like Bronco. Actually very humble. He left a HC position and took a DC position in the same conference.

Also, anyone concerned about Long not being ok working under his protege, remember that Long hired his former boss, Bob Toledo, as the OC at UNM. A difference is that Toledo didn't have a job at the time, while Long currently does.

Fun fact: Rocky Long was born while his parents attended BYU, where his father was a QB on the football team.

I've posted this before but one of my all time favorite BYU receptions was by Eric Drage. It was a long throw to Drage (happened right in front of me in the west stands), the ball was underthrown (don't remember the QB), the DB was positioning himself for an easy interception, the safety was backing him up just in case it went through his hands. Drage plants his right foot, cuts in front of the DB, catches the ball and runs twenty more yards for a TD. Now that's the kind of receiver I'm talking about!

I loved Eric Drage--he always came up with the ball. Unfortunately, my biggest memory of him was being chased down on the 4-yard line after a 52-yard catch and run with under a minute to go in the Holiday Bowl and #11 Ohio State up 28-21. BYU ended up not scoring (Nowatzke dropped a pass in his breadbasket) despite going toe-to-toe with OSU all night. Freshman Chad Lewis made an amazing TD catch in this game. But for some reason, this is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Eric Drage.

They are both gone this off-season.
