Bronco has been listening to too many Stephen Covey CDs in his Ken Garf Dodge. it is a true principle while leading, you will want to eventually delegate all matters to your managers. In this case Bronco had every reason to believe Hill and Anae had mastered their jobs and could operate independently and free of directive. Just look at the 08' and 09' teams. They were excellent teams with great offensive and defensive numbers. The problem with this leadership theory is that i don't think it accounts for as much turnover we have had in players from missions and graduation and injuries. When those things happen as much as they have this year, Bronco needed to recognize that he would have to change his leadership style and be more hands on. But he was fooled by the first game success. My only knock on Bronco is that he should have never let position battles carry past the first week of fall practice. That's his mistake.

Well, yes, but his First Mistake before that one was to fall in love with a guy that doesn't fit our offensive scheme that has worked so well. Then allow the thought to even get passed around that we could change everything we've done and recruited in years past for one guy. That lead to the mistake you are allude to.

No, the mistake he made was allowing his offensive coaching staff to not make a decision regarding the starting QB.

I fully believe if BYU has simply made a decision one way or another after spring ball and allowed that QB to develop timing with the receivers all summer and through fall camp things would be vastly different.

" Linebacker Shane Hunter said the defense has worked harder in practice this week with Mendenhall, especially because Monday’s practice was entirely devoted to sprints. “Coach Mendenhall’s personality has really taken over the defense, and I would even say going into the offense,” Hunter said. “We’re giving all we have, and a lot more is expected of not just us on defense but on offense. He’s really just pushing us to be the best we can be.”

Hunter said he enjoys having more contact with Mendenhall, and he knows how to make the players work. “I definitely think him being here is always a good thing to help us out because he understands the defense really well,” Hunter said. “He understands us as players, and he knows how to push the right buttons to get the most out of us.” "

" Noted were reports that practices are now longer and more spirited, and Mendenhall was asked what he has done to contribute to changes on the practice field. "I think the players know that I really love them and I would like to help them; I'm completely interested and devoted to making sure they have their best chance to succeed, and I think they feel that. I think that not only did (coaching change) get their attention, it was a starting point... I think they're trying very hard in practice, I think they're very tired at the end of practice, I think they're having a great time..."

BYU KR/PR/WR J.D. Falslev confirmed that things have changed with Mendenhall taking a more active daily coaching role: "It's a whole different mentality with Coach Mendenhall there. He was there before, but not to this level. I think with him there now, the guys haven't played this hard since I've been here, for a year and a half. And I don't think it's been as fun, to be honest, for a year and a half. I've never had so much fun as a scout team player, and it's hard to have fun as as scout team player. It's fun to see those (defensive) guys be successful, playing with so much heart and so much passion for the game, and so much love for each other."

I asked Falslev what he thinks we'll see out of BYU now that a change has been made in the fudamental structure of the team. "A lot more doing, and a lot less talking. We've had to take a look at ourselves and re-evaluate. It's time to go to work, and stop talking about 1-4, and how young we are, and start working. Let's start working now, and get this mentality of who we are and how hard we're going to work and who we are going to be."

Mendenhall agreed with Falslev's characterization, saying "I'm not so much about what I'm saying anymore either. The players need to see me working and they need to see me working at a level equal to or hopefully exceeding what they're doing--harder, longer and better than what they saw before." "

To me this confirms bronco's decision to fire Hill. How can a coordinator , especially with such a new, young team, not be doing these basic drills and preparation?

The good news is that since Bronco took over the special teams, they have looked really good and been statistically dominant.

Here's hoping the same thing happens with the defense.

" "We've really picked up the tempo, and we've really picked up our attitude and energy in practice, way beyond all the rest of the practices," said freshman quarterback Jake Heaps. "It's been great to see, it's been great to see our guys working this hard. I'm really liking the intensity of our practices right now."

Other reports from practice indicate Mendenhall looked like he was frothing at the mouth, firing up and challenging players on every play, acting like he'd like to kill somebody. His players followed his lead. Some described practice as "very amped up and intense." ...This Mendenhall is the one many remember at New Mexico, Oregon State and Louisiana Tech and in his early days at BYU.

"He's energized by being hands-on, and the players responded to him this week," said BYU assistant coach Lance Reynolds. "
