Did replay guys blow it?

It was a blown call, and SDSU couldn't overcome it. It's not like it happened on the BYU 1-yard line w/ just a few seconds left which would have given SDSU a chance win or tie the game. It happened in the late third quarter or early fourth quarter. SDSU had multiple chances to win the game.

If SDSU doesn't go three-and-out SIX times or rush for only 53 yards against the WORST rush defense in the nation, they would have had a MUCH better chance at winning. SDSU and their fans would do well to look where THEY could have made plays to take care of business and not let a blown call affect the outcome of the game.

Great point Kitic. I like how Bronco turned "adversity" into a part of fall camp (i.e., getting calls that were blown and recovering).

I guess I just think we should go back to the days where video replay didn't make a difference to the on-field crew.

Kitic hit it on the head. I can think of very very few times where the ref's call was in fact the reason a team lost. In fact right now the only one that comes to mind in my judgment was the '72 Olympic BB game between the US and the USSR where the refs kept replaying the last three seconds until the Soviets got it right and scored....

This is nothing new, replay officials blow calls ALL THE TIME. But, since the MWC is mad at BYU for leaving (but not Utah, for whatever reason), they have to harp on this particular call.

Is it true that JJ's facemask was yanked on the play?

Although, there are some arguments that can be made, that the process used was totally inexcusable, the end result was correct.

The officials did completely botch the end of the game, but in some respects got it right. The ball was inbounded follwing the made FT, and the US stopped them. However the USSR protested that a timeout had been called. If a timeout had been called then the play should not have been allowed, so a replay of the inbounds should have been allowed.

The second inbound occured too early - before the clock was set - and shouldn't have happened, so was rightfully replayed.

The third inbound was just poor defense all around by the United States.

IMO, what should have happened and due to the horn sounding during Collins' 2nd FT, there should have been a replay of the final moments of the game. The officials just didn't go back far enough. They should have gone back to Collins' 2nd FT and started from there, instead of from the Soviets inbounding.

But like SDSU, the USA didn't make the plays throughout the game so as to not allow an officials poor decision to significantly affect the outcome of the game.

Also, remember, in the college game, the on-the-field refs don't see the replay, the booth officials describe what they're seeing.

Isn't it likely the booth official is saying something along the lines of:

Booth: DiLuigi is being tackled, and falling to the ground. Now the ball is out, knee not down, clear fumble. DiLuigi is pinning the ball against his leg with his hand, no SDSU player touching it. Whistle is blown. SDSU player grabs the ball away from DiLuigi's soft grip while pinning against his hip.

Official: So the SDSU play grabbed the ball after the whistle and after DiLuigi was on the ground pinning the ball against his body with his hand?

Booth: That's what I see.

Official: Ok, BYU ball.

Looking at the slow-motion replay, I see two facemask penalties by different players just before the fumble. If this was a make-up call, it was probably because of that.

Last time a bad call happened we came around the next week and won 59-0.

Hopefully it won't be reversed this time around.

I'd just like to add, the mwc should hire Franchuk since they both do a poor job of simple research, professionalism, and are equally unattractive.

If they're looking at the same camera angle I see, DiLuigi grabs at the ball by his leg after the SDSU player already has a hand on it. So this is either because of the whistle or it's a make-up call.

But how would the slo-mo camera replay know when the whistle blows? Is there audio? How would a replay official know if/when the whistle blew?

Ok, but does the SDSU player have possession then? Having a hand on the ball may not be the same as possessing the ball. JJ grabbing the ball may have been enough for the replay official to give him possession and deemed down by contact.

Regardless, it's a blown call.

If nobody has clear possession when the whistle is blown then possession belongs to the last team who possessed it. At least that's how I understand it.

To me it looks like the whistle is blown when JJ has a hand on top of the ball. Since the whistle is blown and SDSU doesn't have clear possession at that point then it's BYU ball.

Keep in mind that this play happened in the 3RD QUARTER of the ball game. 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter to be exact. This was not what won the game for BYU.
