True, because our D played so well and our receivers caught all those passes. Heaps sucked in that game, it was all his fault.

In fact everything that is wrong with our offense is all his fault. Heaps definitely has issues he needs to fix. He is throwing behind receivers and struggles with his touch passes. And receivers and TE's are dropping passes that hit them right in the hands. But, yeah, Heaps is the problem.

Someone please explain to my why JJ catches Heaps passes, but no one else does? Is it really because Heaps only throws well to JJ? Really?

The receivers have played horribly as well, but maybe it's because they don't want to play for Heaps. Maybe Heaps isn't a great leader at this point in his career. Somehow Ashworth and Jacobson were productive under the last 2 BYU QBs.

Get over the drops. No one is pinning this all on him. The drops have had a big impact, but BYU would have lost that game even if the WR caught every ball they should have. Best case scenario is that Heaps has another 2 or 3 TD passes--that would still leave him at a 4 TD to 6 INT ratio. That's not great or even good. That's poor. Right now he's thrown 1 TD pass to 6 INTs. You can't blame that all on the receivers.

Seriously, I am getting dumber reading this crap. This just might be the dumbest thread yet this year, and we have had some pretty poor threads.

I think we are all excusing his lack of execution because of the drops and the play calling but you'd be surprised what a little confidence and fire in the huddle from a true leader can do to the grip on a receiver's gloves. I don't doubt that Jake was a true leader in high school, surrounded by his peers, but SO FAR he lacks whatever he needs to get THIS team moving and THAT makes me wonder if trying another guy in there isn't such a bad idea. His numbers are ABISMAL. I don't think he should be excused of that because of his age. Let's throw Lark or Munns in there and see what they can do. It REALLY can't get any worse.

Northern, I wondered aloud to myself how long it would be before one of these geniuses would compare Heaps/ his situation to President Obama. Given the hatred/vitriol most of these people have/ speak for our commander-in-chief, this doesn't bode well for Jake. By the way abysmal is spelled like that, not " abismal ", TK Dave .You're right, you can get dumber reading this crap, just like when you watch Fox News.

You are all right. We need to treat our quarterbacks like a riley stephenson punt. Okay this one only went 20 yards and out of bounds, but what about the next one?

"Hey kid, sorry we are throwing you in there to early, with only half the prep, and only half our confidence in you. Sorry that we will pull you after one mistake in the air force game, even if it means us losing the game undoubtedly. Sorry that your line can't block, your OC can't NOT call a short yardage play off the tackles. Sorry that you had better wide receiving talent, and probably a better offensive playcaller in high school. Sorry that we are putting you in as an unprepared true freshman against teams that have good defenses, much better than our own, try to make due with the few times you do get the ball."

"We are going to see if one of our other has nots - yes, the ones that you beat out in spring and fall - can do the job against the easy part of our schedule. If they can't we'll probably come back to you. There's always next season that we can stack the numbers to make it look like someone is keeping up with you."

Is that how the conversation would go? Please...

I am SICK of these threads. I'll admit right now, today's performance has me very, very concerned as to whether we're ever going to see the sort of dividends on Heaps that we would have liked. All things considered (half the reps, youth, etc.), he should be playing better than he is.

Having said that, arguing that Munns/Lark deserves a shot says NOTHING about Munns and Lark and everything about Heaps. It's like the old cliché goes: "Who's the most popular player on a football team with a losing record? The backup quarterback." As frustrated as I am with Heaps (and believe me, I'm frustrated), it makes zero sense to turn to two fresh-off-their-missions kids who have done nothing in practice to distinguish themselves, one of whom doesn't even seem to be in physical condition to play right now. (Cougman keeps turning to Munn's HS experience to say we should give him a shot. Which I find odd: that's the EXACT SAME REASON we were so big on Heaps in the first place.)

If there's one person I'm always reluctant to point the blame at, it's Bronco. I think he's a great coach, and still do, in spite of this season. I think many here feel the same way. Not to say I don't second-guess him, but I assume he can see something when it's clear. Do we really think he's so inept that at the beginning of the year. he chose to place our most talented QBs at 3rd and 4th on our depth chart?

I'll say this: if Heaps screws up against Wyoming, by all means, knives out. If he can't put up respectable numbers against a sub-par team on his second go-around (and not because the gameplan focuses on the run, but truly BLOWS the game), my concern moves into all-out panic. Until then, I'm severely disappointed that our golden prospect is playing like this, but I'm not calling for his neck when he struggled against the #4-#5 team in the nation that's known for being a defense first team. Give him one more creampuff shot, then I'll throw caution to the wind.

Actually, even with all the talent we had the past two years with hall, pitta, unga, collie, etc, our offense has been stomped by TCu's D nearly as bad those two yeArs as this year. I know they moved the ball a little better, but didn't have much more real success. How many points did we score last year and in 2008? 7 each? We scored 3 with a young inexperienced team this year. If our NFL caliber players couldn't get it done against tcu then why our we putting so much blame on heaps and this years offense for not getting it done? We just need to take a deep breath and reevaluate after the next game or two. This TCU outcome, though disappointing, was not unexpected. In fact, we actually beat the point spread which didn't happen the previous two years, not even close.

The scary thing is that I think you are serious. You can't see the forest through the tree's.

A small part of me hopes you get your wish and they put Lark or Munn's in so you could see first hand how idiotic it would be.

I am wondering if you are the guy who sits near me at the games who was calling for Riley all of last year every time that Max made a mistake? Of course, Max did produce more than twice as many points the past two years against TCU that Jake did so maybe you do have a point.

But right now we all love Heaps because of his High School career and the reality of the matter is that Munns and Lark both had excellent High School careers as well, so why not at least see what they can do in real game situations as opposed to simulated practices and what not?????

I saw Lark play in HS and he was completely worked by Riley's team in the state championship game his senior year. He wasn't nearly as good in HS as your silly argument needs him to be.

I could give Heaps a pass on yesterday's game if he had some semblance of accuracy, but all we saw was the same style of play that got Matt Leinart run out of Arizona--bad throw downfield, checkdown, checkdown, checkdown, pick. Rinse and repeat. He was terrible running a simplified pass package that was tailored to his strengths. He couldn't even get the ball in a position where his receivers could drop it.

While many are pinning the loss on Anae (with no small amount of justification), that shouldn't excuse Heaps' ineptitude. He was simply bad all afternoon. Some are giving him a pass because he is a true freshman going against TCU, but the other true freshman QB in the conference at least managed to complete 58% of his passes against TCU--with no picks. Thomas's 98 PER was nothing to get excited about, but I'd take that over Heaps' two picks any Saturday of the year. I didn't expect Heaps to win yesterday, but that doesn't excuse him giving the game away with the pick to end the first half.

I don't think Munns or Lark are the answer this season--they haven't been getting enough snaps to have them ready enough to think they'll be an improvement. Fortunately we have four games in a row that we could win with Italics under center.

Heaps is our guy for 2010, but that doesn't mean he is the guy next season, and it certainly doesn't mean he wasn't an absolute disappointment on the field yesterday.

I am not one that is giving him a pass. He has as much responsibility as anyone on the team for how poorly our offense is playing. I just find it laughably stupid that some on this thread are saying we should put in Lark or Munns as though that would magically fix everything. Every time BYU struggles this is the drivel that is parroted by the massively clueless. I lived through the QB carousel that Crowton employed. That worked brilliantly.

Our offense is a disaster right now and I don't know what the answer is. But Nelson wasn't any better of an answer than Heaps. Those that say that TCU's D isn't very good are morons. But it does make the argument a little more palatable to say that Heaps sucks because he sucks, not because he went up against a great D yesterday.

In my 22 years of watching BYU play, I have seen one time where the backup QB was better. That was Hancock in the early 90's, and he was 3rd string if I remember right. Maybe even 4th. In 22 years it has worked once. Not too good of odds for those thinking we should change QB's.

sno, it's hard to disagree with your assessment. It's obvious that Heaps took a step or two back yesterday. Part of the problem was the receivers just weren't getting open. My perception for that is watching an online feed with crappy VS camera work, which was fooled a number of times on play action and such.

I put the first INT on Anae as Heaps should not be throwing from his own endzone at the close of the half. I also give credit to a phenomenal play by the TCU LB to climb the ladder and catch that ball. Heaps threw it high enough it should have cleared, but the guy got it. Which raises another question, if Heaps is so hard to catch, how did that guy catch the ball???!!!

The second INT was all on Heaps, throwing into triple coverage with two receivers in the same area. Yet, given how Stephenson has been erratic, I would actually take a long INT on 3d and long since we don't know what to expect from the punter at times. Further, the D stepped up after that and shut down TCU, so no harm, no foul.

I agree completely that the next 4 teams on BYU's schedule allow us to see if Heaps really can produce. I expect our O to bring the power run with Heaps passing much like he did against SDSU. We will also see if the receivers can get on track and actually help the team this season.

Go Cougars.

Replacing Heaps at this point with a QB with even fewer reps than Heaps is tantamount to trying to see how low our QB passer rating can get.

How about Brandon Doman? You were probably the one in the stands telling everyone to keep Engemann in because he has a cannon arm and was a high school All-American. Yes, we should have started Covey over Detmer all along as well, right?

Max Hall proved he was a winner on the field--Heaps hasn't come anywhere close to that yet. That's all I'm saying--I hope that Heaps can prove he belongs by his performance on the field. We all have every right to question Heaps until he proves something to us.

I forgot about Doman so that is two in 22 years. Detmer is 3 if you go back a couple more years. I agree Heaps has miles to go and I have no problem with people questioning his ability right now.

What I do have a problem with is those calling for others to play. Right now that makes zero sense. Let's give him a few more weeks before we call for his head.
