Completely disagree with the initial post. I and many others were wrong in thinking that he didn't have the stones to man up and focus. But anyone calling for him to be benched was completely justified. The kid was playing without heart and he had zero focus. Luke Ashworth has played awesomely as of late and I am pumped. That doesn't change the fact that he was ashworthless for the first several games nor does it even approach atoning for those mistakes and lack of heart.
The same logic applies to Robert Anae, except it should be magnified because he is the coach. His poor decisionmaking and lack of respect from players cannot be overlooked. I am convinced that under anae we will never surpass what we did in 2006 and 2009. We need to move on and get better to match the coaching talent with the player talent we have and will continue to pick up.
I can forgive Luke for the 1st half of the season, in fact, I'll bet it was easy as a receiver to pick Riley as your guy when you're 5 yrs older than Heaps and the guy that didnt' get along with the other receivers (Oneill Chambers) had hand picked Jake. OC has been hammering Ashworth and Jacobson the last yew years in the media and through social networking... how the heck are they going to side with OC on the qb situation when Riley was also an RM, had played the game before and knew how to work?
Did he and Jacobson suck the 1st half? yes... no doubt .. what's different? Well for one OC isn't there, for 2 Riley isn't either. I don't know what caused this epiphany, but I like it and I like that he's helped us all see the light on Heaps. Maybe it could have happened sooner, but whatever, it happened and we have salvaged our season, thanks in part to Luke Ashworth.
As for Anae, I think the x factor there is brandon doman and jake heaps. If they are so comfortable with this offense that Anae either has to listen or Jake can read the field well enough to audible into the correct play (Max Hall-esque), then a so-so OC can still work. (Look what LSU does with Crowton). Jake can learn to be the offensive coordinator on the field, much like Max was.
There's no doubt that the spread fits our talent and what our oline is good at. There's no doubt that Jake Heaps is as talented as any qb we've had since Steve Young. What we have yet to see, is how those 2 (heaps and anae) do against a decent team on the road. We'll find out soon in SLC and in our bowl game if these guys have really figured it out or if we just mindlessly outtalented CSU and UNLV.
