He definitely could vie for playing time next year and help out immediately which is what he's looking for. But... got to ask the question... if he's not happy for any reason, what's to stop him from bailing yet again? Not to say we don't take him, but isn't that something to think about?

Looks like it'll be between us and UNLV for his services. If he wants to play right away an be the next Jimmer (I realize that's a tall task) then the door's wide open to make the attempt.

This could get ugly. I don't like it. Here's a kid that goes to UCLA and after 10 games decides he wants out? I see two major red flags here: 1) He chose UCLA in the first place; and 2) ENTITLEMENT (If he doesn't get exactly what he wants here, he'll be gone) and 3) He's narrowed it to BYU and UNLV. If he is even considering UNLV, do we want him considering us? Would you consider going out with a girl who had a hard time choosing between you and let's say. . .Lil' Wayne?!

Please, Rose. Consider everything very carefully. . .

I don't know the whole story. . .some at the UCLA forums don't blame him, but blame the coach for not getting him PT.

I guess Max Hall worked out. . .

The MWC is a better basketball league than the Pac 10. UNLV, SDSU, BYU, and UNM are better basketball schools than any of the teams in the Pac 10 right now. In theory, every legit player in the Pac 10 should be looking to get out of the conference.

As for considering two schools, I don't think that's so much of a big thing. He's probably looking at playing style as well as how much playing time he'd get. UNLV plays small as do we a bit. UNLV likes to play tough D and get points in transition, as do we.

Good players out of high school have multiple options and consider several teams. It actually shows how good the player is. I don't think anything of it that the kid is weighing options.

The thing that worries me is that I understand UCLA wasn't even his first school. Apparently he committed to Indiana, then decommitted and went to UCLA, now he's gone from UCLA after 10 games? What gives? There may be a good explanation for all of this but it's a HUGE red flag in my book and one that I'm sure Rose et al will have to weigh very carefully. Kid looks like a mini-jimmer on his game film though. I could imagine good things happening with a Carlino, Harrison, Rogers, Collinsworth, Davies rotation on the floor.

Is this guy LDS? If not... Would he have issues with the honor code?

Carlino had much more than offers from Indiana and UCLA. Lute Olsen offered him a scholarship at U of A in 7th grade (he knows point guards pretty well). Florida, ASU, Gonzaga, and many others. He would have had many more but he committed to Indiana as a soph. After his Junior year, he opened up recruiting again because he was concerned he committed too early to Indiana. UCLA and Florida pushed for him to graduate early and skip his senior year in high school. UCLA promised he would play point. Howland put him at shooting guard from day 1 there. I think that was his greatest concern. Everyone is saying it was lack of playing time, but he knew he was a freshman and that the playing time would come. That is not why he left UCLA. BYU will be a good fit for him. He works best with players who know how to move without the basketball. He can pass, shoot and drive. One of Matt's high school assistant coaches at Gilbert Highland was former Cougar safety/running back Brad Clark, who many will remember just may be the hardest hitter BYU has ever had!

Hopefully we overcome injuries to Hartsock and CC and beat UCLA. I am hoping to be at that game.

It makes a lot of sense to me. We need a point and we like a point that can score and still dish, like Jimmer; and that's what Carlino can do. Our offense is as potent as any in the country and we have a major need that Matt can fill right away. I don't see how it could be more perfect.

I also trust Dave Rose implicitely also, if Carlino was offered a scholarship by Dave then Matt is like family to me. Everyone knows how bad Pac 10 hoops is and I have never thought that Ben Howland was a good coach, so i understand that if you left high school a year early and then didn't play what and where you wanted for your career, that you look around for a better fit and a better coach. Dave Rose certainly fits the bill.

I hope that this is as good a fit on the court as it seems on paper but I have zero doubt that Carlino could succeed like Jimmer did, it would just take massive effort. If you want to make it to the NBA as a white point guard that pushes the ball, I think BYU has the blueprint now... the question is how bad does Matt Carlino want to be as good as Jimmer, because this offense will certainly allow it.

We could be the white west coast version of Kentucky, just churning out NBA point guards :)

So the UCLA game/win means a lot more than the norm... We not only move into/close the top 10, but get a point guard out of it as well... I'll take it on both accounts!

Yes, because everyone non-lds kid that comes to BYU has problems with the honor code...

We don't have Crowton recruiting these kids... If BYU offers him, it's because we expect him to contribute right away. I'm pretty sure that Rose isn't going to give him an offer without explaining explicitly what that entails. Especially when you consider that one of the reasons we are short at PG, is the Michael Loyd Jr episode... And a kid that moves across the country to be close to his commit, graduates HS early so he can start right away... not to mention all the family pressure he has going for him... He has NBA sights, just like Heaps has NFL sights. I would be surprised if an athlete that serious was drinking, and just teach him that baseball is wrong - there is no third base.

(And I'm not going off on you Big Cougs, I understand the question. I just hate people that shout out the "he's a minority at a mostly white mormon university" crap...)

He'll be fine if he is serious about sports, whether mormon or not.

A little oversensitive? I haven't heard anything about him being a minority not being able to live the honor code (especially since he looks pretty white to me). The honor code is a a big commitment for LDS and non-lds kids as well as white or "minority" athletes who decide to go to BYU, and every student period that goes to BYU. Legit question.

But I agree, he'll be fine if he really wants to be at BYU and knows what he's getting into.

He's definitely white. The honor code is a HUGE commitment, and (my wife being a BYU grad and me not) what I think of it is a different thing entirely. I'm not up in arms against the comment or anything, just that if he is serious about sports, it'll be a non-issue. And there are plenty of Non-LDS kids that do fine at BYU, and plenty minorities too. So I don't think it is fair to say, hey can this guy live the honor code?

Like I said, especially after the Michael Loyd Jr stuff, anyone non-lds recruit will get "the book" on the honor code, and not the nice looking little pamphlet.

Interesting that according to Jay Drew, BYU might have not even known that Carlino was at the game Saturday.

Carlino has committed to BYU, should be interesting to hear if he plans on enrolling in the spring (when he should have been a high school senior). 6'2" athletic and strong combo guard that can handle the ball and was a high national recruit as a high school freshman/soph.

I'm not sure how good this kid will be, his recruiting vids look pretty impressive but then again, most do. What I'm impressed with here is the percentage of recruiting wins that Rose is getting. Between Harrison, Rogers, Collinsworth Jr., Haws, Emery Jr., and now Carlino, when was the last time Rose lost a recruiting battle? If he pulls off a commitment from Parker, I'm nominating Rose for all time best BYU recruiter. Add that to the other very impressive things Rose has done since he took over and I'd have a tough time accepting any other BYU coach as the best ever. He gets his guys, develops them, he wins games, lots of them, and he schedules extremely well, what more do you want?

He technically won the last one he lost, Kingma, chose a bad Oregon team instead of BYU, we can't have morons at BYU now can we?

Oh right, Kingma, of course.
