Please don't even try to compare USU of a few years ago with BYU. BYU has never had an SOS as low as USU is this year and historically is. BYU has always had a higher RPI than USU.

IF BYU gets a 1 seed, it will be because they have earned it THIS year. St. Joe's was a 1 seed and had done even less in the prior seasons than BYU has. IF the Cougs win out, there is NO way we won't be a 1 seed.

For the LAST time - I WASN'T comparing USU from a few years ago to BYU today! If you recall, USU DIDN'T EVEN MAKE THE TOURNEY THAT YEAR! I was simply using them as an example that just because rankings and records suggest that a "mid major" deserves a particular seed (or inclusion at all, in USU's case), that doesn't mean that they'll get it! BYU can finish 33-1 and #1 in the RPI, have the "profile" of a #1 seed, and still get passed up for some 3 loss Big East team (read: UCONN) just because they are in the Big East and BYU is in the MWC.

I'm sorry if this is going over your head.

But that's the thing, the USU team your using didn't have the rankings and records deserving a bid. They were the ultimate paper tiger and the Selection Committee didn't reward them. They played a bunch of home games, a bunch of poor teams and won a ton of games. They weren't road-tested. They had a poor RPI and a poor SOS and weren't that good.

In BYU's case this year, the rankings and records and RPI wouldn't just "suggest" we deserved a particular seed, they'd be screaming we earned that seed.

A number one seed is VERY unlikely. Those for will go to ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12. Sorry that's just the way it will be. For BYU to slide to number one...

1. St Mary's does not lose again -- also makes SDSU look good

2. Arizona does not lose again

3. USU does not lose again.

4. BYU does not lose again.

5. SDSU only loses to BYU, twice

AND

6. Two of big four conf listed above have at least 3 losses each. Cuz Duke and BE winner are #1 LOCKS. So it would have to be both B10 and B12 best team with 3 losses each. Our ranking would be higher, our RPI would still, presumably, be #1.

Then we may get a number one seed.

But I would prefer a 2-3 seed for the matchups. Gives us a real good chance of going deep in the tourney.

Ohio State will not lose 3. Their remaining schedule is too easy for that many upset losses. They will be a 1-seed. That leaves three more 1-seeds. We need to win out and hope others continue to lose. There is a lot of parity in Big East and ACC. Texas, due to huge wins, needs to lose again.

Does anyone remember who the four 1-seeds were last year and what their records were at the time of being selected?

I don't get why anyone is saying that if we get a "high" 3 that's better than a "low" two, and that a 2 or 3 is better than a 1 in any scenario.

I'm not sure if anyone saying this has ever watched CBB, or seen a bracket, or done their own, but it is completely stacked towards the ones and twos.

The 1 plays a 16 seed team for their first game. Then they play the winner of an 8 and 9 (for the 32 bracket), then they play the winner of the other side. (highest seed is a 4...then a 5, then 12 and 13). So pretending that ZERO upsets happen, the strongest seed they will play into the sweet sixteen is a 4 seed (which is probably a 18 ranked team at best.) after they win that game, they play the winner of the other side, which could be a 2 or 3 or whomever wins the other bracket (in the elite 8 ).

So for a number one seed, the only teams they play at their "caliber" don't come for 4 rounds into the tourney.

The 2 plays a 15. Winner of 7 and 10. Then winner of 3, 6, 11 and 14.

So assuming no losses/upsets, a 2 plays the 15, then 7 then the 3rd.

The 3rd seed would play the 14th, the 6th, and the 2nd.

So to sum up:

1 seed v 16,8,4 etc

2 seed v 15,7,3 etc

3 seed v 14,6,2 etc

4 seed v 13,5,1 etc

there is no advantage to getting a lower seed vs a higher seed.

Kansas was 32-2 (15-1), RPI #1. Kentucky was 32-2 (14-2), RPI #2. Syracuse was 28-4 (15-3), RPI #5. Duke was 29-5 (13-3), RPI #3.

Big 12 was #1 RPI conf, Big East #2, ACC #2 and SEC #4.

This year, the top four RPI conf are Big East, Big 10, Big 12, MWC.

IF the Cougs do run the table (or even if they lose in the MWC Tourney finals), they're resume will be as good as any #1 seed last year. They'd be 32-2 (15-1) in the #4 RPI conference and be in the top 5 of the RPI as well.

Duke, Syracuse, Kansas, and Kentucky. But I can't find the w/l information to see if 1-loss team got snubbed by a 3 or more loss team.

Thanks Kitic - Did any 1 loss team get snubbed last year - ie 1 loss but less than #1 seed?

As I read through the thread, I see a lot of good arguments that , historically have validity. They don't, however take into consideration, Jimmermania. This is a new and unheard of phenomenon. The Jimmer effect is a game changer for the selection process, just like an arch rivalry is a game changer on the court or the gridiron.

Jimmermania is amazing! I don't remember so much national attention being given to to single player from any team at any time. That is in part due to the type of player that Jimmer is (the myriad ways he has of scoring, etc.), part to the type of unassuming person he is, and part due to the information age that we are living in, with youtube, etc. People want to see Jimmer! The NCAA wants that kind of attention. The way to get it is to put Jimmer on display.

I'm not saying that we will get a number one seed or anything else, but I am saying that we won't get thrown under the bus this year like we have been every other year. They can't afford to do that this year, both for the lack of publicity, and for the negative publicity.

If they don't implode this year, they will get a very good seed. I am sure of it, because of a single, universally recognizable word; JIMMER!

Few thoughts:

1. Historically, what we deserve and what we get has never aligned. Even when the MWC conference is a stronger conference. BYU doesn't play on Sundays, we haven't had a strong run in the tournament recently, etc. The question is whether Jimmermania and the teams success this season is enough to overcome past stigmas.

2. Publicity's ADD is worse than a three year olds. Jimmer has put up 3 40+ point games in the last four, an extremely phenomenal feat. Should he continue to put up 40+ games regularly, don't expect him to keep getting ESPN interviews. The story has been done on Jimmer.

If he keeps up his current levels of performance than they'll be another huge round of Jimmer publicity at the end of the season. If he doesn't keep up this pace then the story will be, "Guess Jimmer is human after all." To get more attention, Jimmer would have to do something even more phenomenal than what he's done, say a 50+ game. Still, popularity for Jimmer will swell.

3. Should BYU win out and Jimmermania carries into March, I'm not completely sold on the fact that that would be enough to overcome the decades of bias. The committee still has the no-playing-on-Sunday excuse. Best case scenario, IMO we get a 2 seed. Not saying we wouldn't deserve 1 seed, but when have we ever gotten what we deserved.

I posted this elsewhere too, but thought it needed to be here.

Teams that have lost since the last rankings came out!

#2Pitt(Mon), #4SDSU(Wed), #5Conn(Sat), #7Nova(Sat), and #9 tied with BYU - Cuze(earlier this week - can't remember which day).

Five really nice losses to go with BYU's big win vs SDSU and hopefully UNM.

Walker struggled while shooting a ton and didn't even lead his team in scoring. Nice opportunity for The Jimmer.

And the day and week is not over yet!

Jimmer-mania will fade some and reappear if he does something special--sort of a Jimmerr watch.

But I believe it will be enough, unless he totally fades, to over come BYU's seeding -1 or -2 type bias--except if BYU were worthy of a 1 seed. THE Committee won't give that up! They will make byu earn iIT, special status, in the tourney.

When is the last non-power conference #1 seed?
