This shouldn't have been much of a surprise to anyone who has checked out his FB page. Photos of him in UNLV gear, pictures of him with UNLV guys like Wink Adams, etc. I think he was a bigger UNLV guy than BYU guy---no pictures of him sporting UNLV gear.

I wonder how happy he'll be in Vegas once Lon Kruger moves up the freeway to coach the Yewts.

I'm going to move this to the the new BYU Recruiting Forum http://www.cougarcorner.com/viewforum.php?f=23" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As I think it fits better there, even though Dantley has chosen another path.

However, Dantley wears a "Brigham Young" shirt at his home games. And remember, he serves a mission first, so UNLV does give him a scholarship this year, and the mission recruiting pipeline will turn him and he'll come back to BYU--if they want him. :-) I'm just sayin it's a possibility.

Dantley Walker got 56 points last night in a first round loss in the division playoff he's done for the year. He holds virtually every Nevada State basketball scoring record, plus the all time assist records.

I know he's not a BYU commit, but he is my great-nephew. Lincoln County had a weak team this year--not counting Dantley. He literally carried the team game after game.

I went to Dantley's game on Friday night. There was quite a buzz in the gym as he scored all 21 of his team's points in the first quarter. Unfortunately, the 56 points he scored for the game was not enough to lead his team to victory. The most impressive stat of the night - he was 24 of 25 from the free throw line. Below is a youtube clip someone posted of some of his plays from that game. Regardless of where he ends up playing his college ball - he is a great LDS kid that is fun to watch.

I would hope that great LDS would end up at the Y but to play devils advocate, great HS play doesn't always translate to great college play. Here in Ohio a kid from just down the road from me set the all time career scoring record and led his team deep into the playoffs (I think they lost the state championship game-it was a few years ago and I don't feel like looking it up :) ). Ohio St gave him a scholie but the kid never started and ended up going d-II after a couple of years. He was only 6-1 and was trying to do the things he did in HS but they didn't work against 5 d-1 calliber players. He could do it against a team with one or two d-1 calliber players but not when all five were. I'm not saying Dantley would end up the same-I actually would love to see him become the next Jimmer, but I can see why the reluctance by Rose and his staff.

Not coming to BYU. Not in the same conference as BYU. Will probably never play against BYU.

This article is probably of more use to UNLV fans.

I realize that it appears Dantley Walker will not be playing his college ball at BYU (as he did not get a scholarship offer from BYU has I had hoped)- but I thought I'd post a few recent links for any that may have an interest in continuing to follow his career. I've been following his high school career for a few years and plan to continue following his career and wish him success as he plays for UNLV.

Dantley was recently named a 1st Team PARADE All-American (see link below)

A Las Vegas news station also recently did a small feature story about Dantley that you might enjoy. Scroll down and look for the link to the video titled "High School Basketball Star" on the right side of the webpage.

I'm not sure how long the link to the video will remain on this web page - but I thought I would post the link while it is still there.

Then I don't care about him. Wrong forum.

That's a bit harsh. If you choose - you don't have to read my post.

I do know that Dantley's great uncle has posted on this site. I thought - at the least - he may be interested in the links I provided.

While I can appreciate the reason why one of the moderators changed the title of this topic - I think it should be noted that Dantley Walker has not yet signed with UNLV. Dantley has given a verbal committment to UNLV - however, with the recent news that Lon Kruger is leaving UNLV - I would still consider it appropriate to call Dantley a "potential" BYU recruit.

Below is a link to a video someone recently uploaded to YouTube showing highlights from Dantley's senior year. I am glad that the video showcases some of his passing abilities which I actually consider to be his greatest strength. I also think it is worth noting that in most of the highlights he has anywhere from 2 to 4 defenders trying to stop him.

Dantley is going to UNLV. He's not going for the coach. He's going for the program. He's a life-long UNLV fan who has had dreams since he was little to play for the Rebels. He'd play for Dave Rice at UNLV, he'd play for Reggie Theus at UNLV, heck, he'd play for me at UNLV.

HHH, I appreciate your devotion to this kid, he's a good player. But he's likely never going to play in Provo either for or against BYU. I don't care about players that will never play for or against the Cougars.

Your time spent trying to convince us how good he is, was or will be would be better spent on fans who will actually be rooting for him. Which in Dantley's case will be UNLV fans.

Although considering how much UNLV fans dislike BYU and Mormons, I can see why you're seeking approval from the Mormon fan base that is BYU.

I hope Dantley can play, because you can bet his religion will be a source of criticism if he can't.

It is possible the new coach will not want him and revoke the scholarship. Until he signs it is not a done deal.

The most recent quotes from Dantley seem to imply he wants to be a Rebel regardless of the coach. I guess it's possible to have the offer revoked, but a coach at this stage may struggle to fill next year's roster without guys already committed to the school.

Dantley has now signed a letter of intent with UNLV (so the title of this topic can now be changed back to "Dantley Walker - Signed with UNLV") - and it appears that I'll need to find a good UNLV fan board to make any future comments about Dantley as his career progresses. Does a good UNLV fan board even exist???

While my first choice would have been for Dantley to play for my alma mater "BYU" - I am happy that I'll get to see him play for my hometown team "UNLV" - I find it interesting how Dantley's recruitment came around full cirlce - as Dave Rice followed his high school career for the last few years only to see Dantley accept an offer from Lon Kruger and UNLV - fast forward a few weeks and we find that Kruger left for Oklahoma - Dave Rice is then hired by UNLV and then a few days later Rice informs Dantley that his scholarship offer still stands and that he wants him to be a part of his team at UNLV.

Congratulations Dantley! I know that you have put in a lot of long hours and a tremendous amount of work to give yourself an opportunity to play Division I basketball. Your accomplishments to date have been nothing short of extraordinary and I look forward to watching your career develop at the next level.

Unfortunately, no, a good UNLV board does not exist. I hope the UNLV fans are nicer to Dantley for being a Mormon than they are to BYU players who are also Mormon.

I know there will be some on this board that won't be happy that I'm providing one more update on a player that will not end up playing for the cougars. (I am anticipating a few negative responses) But perhaps now that UNLV and BYU will not be in the same conference there may be some who follow this board who may have a passing interest in following Dantley's career.

On my last post I was wondering if any good UNLV comment boards existed? Well I've found one that appears promising as it is dedicated to UNLV basketball - the blog author appears to be a very dedicated, analytical, and upbeat fan. He recently conducted an interview with Dantley's dad that I found interesting. (it is a bit lenghty I'll admit). He also provided an update on Dantley's mission call. He will be going to the Spokane Washington Mission reporting on August 3rd. So if any of you on this blog are from that area - you'll have to keep your eyes open for him.

Here' a few links to some of the blog entries about Dantley:

Rebelreign.com recently posted an update on how Dantley is doing on his mission in Spokane. I've included the link below:
