Repentance and things of a spiritual nature belong and should stay with the Bishop. On occasion, because of the grievance of the sin civic authorities have to be notified and worked with. I do not see, especially since HC violations carry more civic type consequences in regards to a student's eligibility, why set rules and procedures can not be put in place as to when a Bishop needs to involve the HC Office.

Church and state need to be separate, but on occasion they have to collaborate and when they do, it's helpful to have some guidelines in place. I actually think if you were to ask BYU Bishops, they'd welcome the policies.

Very well put.

I agree with BlueIsBetter, you should join the Catholic Church! But really, as Urroner brought up elsewhere, how do you tell the BYU students they must live chaste lives, if breaking that sin is only between the student and the bishop? What about those who aren't LDS and chastity isn't a big issue? Or drinking?

The point has been made by some people that Bishops should have set rules for how to handle HC violations and when to involve the HC Office and when not to. Likewise the HC Office should have specific set rules for how they handle each offense.

I don't like that idea. It removes the spirit of discernment from those who have the keys to use it (Bishops). I like the idea that Bishops and the HC office review each case on a case by case basis and mete out discipline as whispered to by the spirit.

There is another religion out there that doesn't do that, but instead has a proscribed penalty for every 'sin.' The Catholic Church. Have premarital sex? Say 36 Hail Mary's and you're done, every time, no matter what the circumstances.

Thats the entirety of what I mean.

First off, I didn't make that point. I said there could be a set "level" where BYU and the HCO need to be involved (ie, pregnancies - repeat offenders that seem unrepentant, and unwilling to change through numerous attempts - I'm sure there are others I can think of given time) because some Bishops overact sometimes, and can sometimes be biased (yes, even racist or jealous of athletics).

- Your response was that I "should Join the Catholic church."

Then you claimed that I was "telling a bunch of people who (how) to live their lives"

- I asked you where, and you didn't tell me (because i wasn't previously)

Then you tell me that I am "trying to take control of priesthood powers" and that it is my "plan" etc etc etc.

I'm just wondering how and why any of this came about. I am not the one doing the misunderstanding here... I'm the one being told to join the catholic church, and that I am trying to seize priesthood keys that don't belong to me.

???

I think this is what I've been talking about. One mod personally attacks a poster, another mod supports them in doing so, and no one going back to delete those posts. Obviously no suspensions for mods. I find it unfair and hypocritical that board rules only apply to some groups of contributors but not to others. And I find it appropriate to point this out when proof exists and should be looked at by those involved. If the mods involved disagree, delete this post from the thread and PM me why.

I know this is my post, but I'll answer anyway. I don't feel like there was any personal attack by me at any point. BlueIsBetter felt attacked and I apologized to him for that. None of my posts have been modified or removed to stand as a witness of that. I, and the other mods, should have the right to defend their opinions as vigorously as the other users. Now if I, or another mod, had said, "I'm a mod and you're an idiot so shut up or your banned." then I would agree with you. But I have never threatened anyone with mod retribution for disagreeing with me.

In my opinion there are a few posts on this thread that are borderline and could be deleted but once you get to the end of the thread you see that everyone has "kissed and made up". (What you quoted is prior to the reconciliation of the two posters in question). As far as the exchange between the two (Blueisbetter and Hawkwing) I think in compiling a response a better choice of words could have been used to convey the point wanting to be made. That is all that I see that has happened. Blueisbetter saw Hawks response and was agitated by it so he questioned Hawk and Hawk tried to word what he was saying better. There was no purposeful attack made. There may have been a poor construction in trying to say something but not an outright attack. I think too many times more is read into what is in the written word and it is hard to tell if what is being said is what is meant. I don't mean to throw Hawk under the bus in me trying to describe what I saw happen because again I know that Hawk meant nothing by it and also because I could be projecting. Sometimes I am not good at getting my point across so I assume others do the same.

Does that answer your question? You do see that the two parties reconciled the misunderstanding right?...or maybe I am assuming the are reconciled and they are not. See the written word can be difficult to know context or intentions sometimes.

EDIT- I also think Hawkwing while addressing and quoting Blueisbetter was also just addressing the topic as a whole so some of what he said was to address Blueisbetter but some was to the general public and anyone reading the thread.

Besides, Kiwi often messages me or warns me to tone it down. As you all know, we mean one thing when we type it, and others sometimes read it another way. If Kiwi tells me I'm over the line, I know that I am and will step back.

Hey, I'm passionate about BYU sports. Thats why we're here :D

I truly hope there are no hard feelings with BlueIsBetter, as I like him as a poster and I hope he felt in no way threatened as to his membership at this site.

I refuse to let this go until I'm made the moderator of the moderators!

Haha, okay, really, I'll shut up now. Back to sports.

Nobody is arguing against the church continuing that practice. They're arguing against them extending the practice to be included in the University. I don't see how people can't separate these two.

Because the two CANNOT BE SEPARATED. How can you still not understand this? The Church is BYU. BYU is the Church. Einhorn and Finkle. Finkle and Einhorn.

you would respond like that! I said nothing yet you attack me personally! Well, I won't put up with it! I demand my rights! And I'm going to sit here and hold my breath until I get them!

Okay sorry, I just misread your comment. The way you worded it kinda sounded like you were attacking me personally.

Simple, you teach them correct principles and let them govern themselves.

Really, though, I'm not saying get ride of the HC. I'm saying put some policies and procedures in place to help Bishops know when things have to go to the HC office and when they don't.

Besides breaking any sin should always only be between a student a bishop unless there are certain civic entities that are in a need to know basis. Did you really know all about all the sins your fellow classmates made a BYU? Does knowing peoples sins and consequences thereof really keep others from committing the same mistake, especially 19 year olds?
