Anybody hear the radio interview with JIm Mc-Mahan? Yep, the double standard pendulum has swung fully to the other side. It makes me sick how much athletes were favored in the 80's and it makes me sick how much depravity is going on around the BYu campus currently, but our athletes are held to higher standards--or at least the execution [pun intended] of those standards

As students, they are held to the same standards as any other student. Unless I've missed something, BD is still a student.

As athletes, however, these kids are ambassadors of the university, and as such they are rightly held to a higher standard only as far as that ambassadorship is concerned. The leash is shorter if you are going out with the university's name emblazoned on your uniform and representing the school in competitive activities, and especially those that garner national attention.

I have no problem with this higher standard as long as it is limited to that ambassadorship. BD has been told he can no longer represent the university this season. He was told that by the athletic department, not the Honor Code office. As a student, he has been treated like any other student to this point--he is allowed to attend classes and attend to business as usual while the full process runs its course.

There is a huge difference between simply attending classes and actively representing the university. I have no problem with there being a dichotomy of behavior that will result in one being affected and the other not.

I'm not sure we've defined what a double-standard is here. It seems that the HC office has changed in the way it handles things since the eighties, I don't call that a double-standard, I call it learning and changing. A double standard would be if BD was suspended while say, Jimmer, was let slide for the same thing, which didn't happen.

My biggest beef is that the kid got booted off the team prior to the investigation being completed. Basically, it is guilty until proven otherwise, instead of not guilty until all the facts are compiled to make the case.

Listen, I understand that the kid most likely did it. I understand what the HC is about and support most of it (some is silliness). But process must be respected, and here it appears it was not. He was booted, and then the investigation continued. And still continues today. Something wrong about that.

There was no need for an investigation. He confesed. In Dave Rose's own words "Brandon did the right thing". The timing sucked. We all wish it did not happen or happened 6 weeks from now. Some wish he was just excommunicated from Church, but BYU did not get involved in further consequences i.e. let him play. If that si what you all think needs to change - just spell it out and quit pointing to the words in the announcement. Part of me started wondering - hey - how long before a pregnancy shows - couldn't Brandon and the girl just sit on the info and confess later - but convenient as that would have been - that would not have resulted in Dave Rose saying Brandon did the right thing and would have resulted in a lot fo criticism of BYU, the Church, and Brabdon and the girl about who knew what / when and swept it under the rug for reasons of convenience. If you doubt that - just read what has been said about how BYU handled Jim McMahon's suspension - after the season.
