The Big XII doesn't have equal revenue sharing for current members. BYU would most certainly take a pay cut.
Is a pay cut always a bad thing?
I have a friend who was making well into the six figures in the gaming industry when his company asked him to become a manager. He would have been a great manager, but he wanted to design games. They told him he had to become a manager or quit. He quite and found a job making barely over $100K a year. He loved his job and he had a passion for it.
Sometimes a pay cut isn't a bad thing.
This case would be more like your friends example, where he'd be forced into something he didn't want, AND have to take the pay cut, or go out on his own and do something he loved for more money. Even I know which ones makes the most sense!
Honestly, and not trying to change this thread into a religious discussion, BYU and BYU sports are ultimately all about promoting the Church and, more importantly, the gospel. Mistakes will be made along the way and bad decisions will be made also. There will be years when sports at the Y will be almost as bad as at the U, but in the long run, BYU will live up to its billing and purpose.
President Spencer Kimball made an interesting comment in a devotional at a 12 stake fireside, when I was attending the Y back in the late 70s. BYU had lost a big bowl game and there were students who questioned why the Lord would let BYU lose a game like that when a win would have done wonders for missionary work.
He said that the Lord does things in his own time, that winning a bowl game isn't going to help truly convert people. Also that the other team had better players and they deserved to win. The Lord isn't going to all of a sudden make other teams lose to BYU just to convince people to join the Church. BYU will have to earn the privilege of winning the big game.
He also said that there will come a time when BYU will win national championships, have on its faculty Noble prize winners, and produce world class scholars and academics. That was about 33 years ago and BYU has come a long way since then to fulfill its destiny and BYU is earning the privilege to winning the big games through hard work, discipline, and honor.
