What should we do with the new money from the ESPN contract?

Just wondering--tell me what you think in the poll.

Can they give the players more? I'd like to pay the coaches what they are worth and upgrade our facilities.

I wouldn't mind updating our training and. . . oh wait never mind they did that already.

Did we have the 65K arrive in the first years that BYU expanded to that size? I actually don't know, but I don't know that you can't expand before you are full up. The stadium needs at least an upgrade even if they don't add more seating. I'd love to see us add space and actually give the fans some room. When a game is sold out, it's not real comfortable and I'm only 6' 0" and my knees, if the person in front of me has brought a clip on seat, digs right in and it's very uncomfortable. Shame on them for just throwing us all so tightly together. I've only been to five other college venues in my life, but none of them corral the people together like BYU does in the LES and MC.

Seriously though - if you stuck an upper deck on the east side, you could add at least 10,000 seats. If you sold those tickets at, say, $10/ticket, it would be guaranteed to be full. Local church youth groups and larger families that could never afford season tickets or regular priced tickets for everyone would be all over that, and you could even market it that way to make sure that it is always full. That gives you an extra $100,000/game plus the extra concessions, so probably close to $1 million in extra revenue per season. I have no idea how much that would actually cost, so at $1 million / year, I don't know how long it takes for it to pay for itself. But it would be full and it would be AWESOME.

yeah, I can't imagine Texas, ND, and Georgia Tech drawing more fans than Wyoming, UNLV and New Mexico.

Yeah, since those big name programs (is GaTech still a big name?) are coming to LES so frequently. Here's the Cougars' home games that have been announced so far:

Don't forget that we are buddying up with the WAC through 2013, so those aren't going to be games packing the stadium any more than UNLV, Wyoming, and UNM. ND hasn't even committed to a year for their return date yet.

Just so they don't blunder once again and give lifetime seating to so many folks at a discounted rate. I understand whomever was at the helm at the time didn't beleive BYU would be what it is, but they were very short-sighted and the rest of us that weren't there (nor our fathers or grandfathers) have been shut out because of that.

If LES could hold 90-100K and actually fill it - that might be just what it takes for the big boys to be wiling to come to Provo every other game. Some woud stil duck such arrangments because they want to take ZERO risk of ever losing a game outside of conference, but a few might show up to play in a big time arena.



If you have ever atended a college football game elswhere - you know what a bargain BYU tickets are and it would be embarrassing if BYU fans would not fill a bigger stadium to watch Heaps break records even if he is breaking them against the same WAC teams Detmer and McMahon and Young set them against.

I agree about the Vuvuzelas, but the cell phone jammers...But for those of us who can't make it to games it is awesome to get the phone call from your brother who is at the game, just after BYU scores the winning TD. Sure, he can't hear me over the noise, but it is fun to hear the full force of the crowd.



As for how to spend the money, I say upgrade the facilities. I would like to see a master plan for eventually expanding LES to 80k, a little like Boise State's plan for their stadium. It will take decades and multiple phases, but they have a plan for their stadium expansion. I want a multi-phased plan to upgrade and expand LES to 80K.



And the MC could use some work. The seats inside are ugly and pretty uncomfortable, (at least the last time I was there) and the facade is really dated. It could use some freshening up, inside and out.



I love our coaches and think they are doing a great job, but I don't know about using it to pay them more. First off, we don't know what they are currently paid, but apparently it is enough to keep them around. I don't want money to be the reason someone leaves, but I don't want it to be their reason to stay either. I don't want BYU coaches to be mercenaries. If we give more money for coaches then I want it to focus on assistants. I think our HC are living quite well in Provo.

I'm cool with that usage of a cell phone - a TD is scored, people are celebrating, and I do not begrudge a man the right to celebrate as he will. But from when the players start lining up to when the whistle is blown, shut up and watch the freaking game! (Unless we're on defense, then scream your guts out and watch the freaking game, and don't even THINK about asking me to be quiet so you can talk on your freaking phone!)



Sorry - I sometimes have flashbacks about some really annoying fans I had to sit with on occasion, and I'll just lash out with things like, "If you can't stand for 4 hours straight, you shouldn't be in the student section!" "You want me to be nicer to the refs? This isn't a ward activity, this is a FOOTBALL GAME!" "Pink? You thought our school color was PINK?!" Scares the crap out of my coworkers. ;)

The last thing they should do is give student section backed seats. That would reduce overall seating capacity which reduces seats for students, and students already pay less per ticket than the rest, so they have it good. Pretty much every college stadium student section is aluminum benches.

I totally agree with upgrading both LES and the Marriott Center. The MC looks like the Provo temple, but without the steeple and in BYU brick. They could add some glass and make it look more like the JFSB or the new broadcasting building.



Here is an idea that has been simmering in my head for a while. I think the powers that be need to create a super fan section for both football and basketball. Put in 5 rows that come down closer to the field that would be reserved just for the super loud, crazy, energetic, spastic fans, so the public can see that we have a fan base that IS into the game and cares just as much or more than the other teams' fans. I thought the Marriott center was great this year. It helped make the season what it was...and Jimmer helped.



On the other hand, I am so sick of seeing BYU fans sitting there at the football games, looking like they are at a golf meet when they are shown on TV (I live out of state, so I can only watch the games on TV). I don't remember if it was 2009 or 2008, but I remember a moment during a game that they showed a close up of three or four fans that looked downright bored and, no joke, right before the cameras went back to the field, the guy in the middle of the screen yawned!



Come one! Show some excitement! Your at a football game, and apparently you have some decent seats! They should have auditions for the super fan section. You know front row seats would be a great incentive to get people to make more noise. Have them dress up all crazy (obviously within the honor code) and act like lunatics. It definitely would not hurt the cause.
