This is it, fellas. This is what we get. A bunch of wins over cupcakes, and garbage against half way decent teams. Despite the coaching inadequacies we actually beat the spread and kept it a little interesting.

As I said before, our signature win is going to be San Jose Freaking State. Wow. This is probably the most underachieving team I have witnessed over the past 15 years.

you cant pin this on bronco, try the bone headed plays by riley over and over again. learn from you mistakes and he does not. same stupid crap again and again.

Sno, none those teams you named won 9 or more games. IF that is your definition of a big game, we truly are in trouble, Name the last 10 win team we beat. Not sure Bronco has.

Utah 2009. TCU 2006.

Those were wins over 10 win teams by Bronco.

How many wins over 10 win teams did LaVell Edwards have in his career? I can only think of 2, however there may have been more. Edit, ok, 3 so far, Miami 1990, Wyoming and Kstate 1996.

For starters, I wasn't looking for 10 win teams--the OP was saying all we got was "garbage against halfway decent teams."

As for wins over ten win teams, I'm pretty sure there aren't many teams/coaches with wins over ten win teams--by definition ten win teams have a winning percentage of at least 71% in a 14 game schedule, or 77% in a 13-game schedule.

Pre-2QB, Bronco was 2-5 against teams with 10 or more wins--or 28.5%. Each of those were 13 game schedule 10 win teams, and 2 of the losses were to teams that would go undefeated. Those ten win opponents combined for a winning percentage of 87%. Bronco was, statistically speaking, much better than average against those teams as he won more than twice as often against those teams than any other team they played.

Last season BYU went 0-3 against ten win teams--our worst team since Crowton. FSU, UNR, and TCU.

I think Bronco has it in him. I just don't expect it each and every time we play a ten-win team, and I'm reasonable enough to look at the TCU game last night as a positive sign--even you were looking for a blowout last night, and instead we saw BYU a lot closer to TCU than what we thought.

I just choose not to make Bronco out to be a sub-standard coach because last night his team showed me more than I expected, but not enough to win. I think people are forgetting how much better BYU did last night than we expected. For some reason they are pissed at Bronco that our team we thought would get hammered was in the game last night.

BYU was a only a few plays away from a win and only a few plays away from another meltdown. The fact that Bronco was "mystified" about the loss is in itself mystifyingly maddening. If he preaches nothing else it "execution". If thats his mantra then in the absence of special teams somebody's head ought to roll.

Although I will say that BYU was only slightly "out-executed" but TCU's speed and killer attitude (learned from Patterson) overwhelmed our Oline and special teams.

Lavell had 8

SDSU 1976

New Mexico 1982

AF 1983

AF 1985

UTEP 1988

Miami 1990

AF 1991

Wyoming 1996

Tied Iowa in 1991.

Crowton had 1. Hawaii 2002.

Notice that BYU has only 1 win over a "major" program with 10 wins in the last 40 years. We have 12 losses against "major" 10 win teams in this era.

In LaVell Edwards' first 10 years coaching, he had 0 wins against 10 win teams. I don't know why we kept him around as long as we did. After all, he just couldn't win the BIG games. ;)

For the record, very few teams beat other teams that win 9 or 10 games.

Bronco never said he was mystified by the loss. He was mystified by a punter that dropped 2 punts when it had never happened before in practice or in a game. I think most fans feel the same way. You prepare and correct for mistakes that you see, when someone does something twice which has never been done before, how do you prepare or correct that? You guys are blowing my mind today, laying blame where there is none because you see some sort of phantom pattern.

What "phantom pattern"? No one here is saying that botched punts are a pattern. but what people are saying, and rightfully so, is that there is a pattern of BYU underperforming, and repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot in big games. It happens all the time. Sure, the mistakes might be different...but the "pattern" of making mistakes and underperforming is there.

Good find, rasta. This speaks volumes even though the intent of my original post wasn't to place the blame entirely on Bronco. I don't think Bronco is inadequate. I don't think he needs help recruiting (he's done a great job, despite losing Tao). I think he's a great person with a pretty creative defensive mind.

My problem is that I get the impression that I care more than he does. Simple logic would say that I'm dead wrong, but that's the impression I get. I also feel like he is absolutely thrilled winning 9 games every year and competing (back in the day) for a MWC title. That's fine if those are your expectations. It's just difficult watching Utah, TCU, Boise, and Hawaii go to BCS games time and time again.

I tried lowering my expectations in years passed citing the fact that "football is 4th or 5th on the list" or whatever he said. Afterall, it's a church school certainly dedicated to more important things rather than football. But then when Holmoe sought and obtained independence citing his desire to essentially show the nation we're an amazing team, I started to think maybe football is important to BYU.

Guess I was wrong.

Prior to last year, Bronco was 2-5, or .2857, good enough for at least the top-25.
