Our lack of huge comeback wins

So Bronco has never come back from a huge deficit. And Bronco has lost by some pretty big margins.

In 2011, we lost by 44 to a Utah team that is currently 5-4.

In 2010, we lost by 21 to an Air Force team that finished 9-4. We lost by 24 to a Florida St team that went 10-4. We lost by 14 to a Nevada team that went 12-1. We lost by 28 to a TCU team that went 13-0.

In 2009, we lost to a Florida St team by 28 that was 7-6. We lost by 21 to a TCU team that went 12-1.

In 2008, we lost by 25 to TCU that went 11-2. We lost by 24 to a 13-0 Utah team.

In 2007, we had no huge losses (by 10 to UCLA [6-7] and by 8 to Tulsa [9-4]).

In 2006, we had no huge losses (by 3 to Arizona [6-6] and by 7 to Boston College [10-3]).

In 2005, we lost by 21 to San Diego St (5-7) and by 26 to Notre Dame (9-3).

I don't see a whole lot of teams that seemed capable of giving up huge leads. We lost big to a lot of very good to great teams. There a few head scratchers (2009 to FSU and SDSU in 2005), but I don't see a bunch of teams that we really could have come back against.

We executed them.

That's all I can think of.

We didn't have a very good team in 2005 (if you remember, we were 6-6).

In 2006, we had John Beck--he helped us avoid any huge losses.

In 2007, we had a decent team, regardless of strength of schedule.

In 2008, Max lost a couple of games for us (the blowouts vs. TCU and Utah) because of his picks.

In 2009, TCU was good, and we just lost focus against Fla St.

In 2010, we had defensive failures in the first half of the year. That lost us a couple of big games (Utah St, AFA, and Fla St).

In 2011, we didn't have very much fire with Jake. Also, if we had had a run game, we would have had a better chance at winning.

Result? We need to be focused, we need to establish our offense on the ground, and we can't give TOs. Having a good qb comes from recruiting, experience, and development.

Max didn't lose the games in 2008 by himself. We got down early, and after we were already down Max pressed too much, trying to make something happen.

Painful as it is to read the 2010 paragraph - note it is the longest list - OP really left a game off that list that I consider to be a big loss and in 2010, some of those should have been come-back opportunities as with 2011 early. After all - we came back vs USU in 2011 - why not in 2010? Well, I have beaten that dead horse and those rising tides to death over the last two years.

Washington - Nelson / Heaps - Win 23-17

Air Force - Nelson / Heaps (benched) - Loss 14-35

Florida State - Nelson (Injured early) / Heaps - Loss 10-34

Nevada - Heaps - Loss 13-27

Utah State - Heaps - Loss 16-31

BYE BYE - Stuff hits Fan - Hill gets the axe and most likely seeds of destruction for Anae and Higgins were also planted here - Bronco recaptures heart and soul of team that quit

San Diego State - Heaps (and what SDSU would call a bad fumble ruling) - Win 24-21

TCU - Heaps - Loss 3-31

Wyoming - Heaps - Ugly - Win 25-20

BYE WEEK - Just about BANDWAGON Time

UNLV - Heaps - Breakout - Win 55-7

Colorado State - Heaps - Big - Win 49-10

New Mexico - Heaps - Big - Win 40-7

Dang

Utah - Heaps - Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda - Loss 16-17

UTEP - Heaps - Signature - Win 52-24

Anyway - How did USU miss the list in the OP?

I left USU off the list because it wasn't a 20-point loss.

How did Nevada make the list?

Bye week last year was after wyoming. 2 weeks of preparation and Heaps finally started looking like a BYU Qb.

I will fix OP - Should have put Bye Bye for clarity - it was Bye Bye for Hill and in reality - the decision was probably made at that same time for the eventual Bye Bye for Anae and Higgins.

Why would you put UNLV as his breakout game? CSU was his first game with a 200+ rating. Was it because for the first time, he led us to a bunch of offensive points? :skeptic:

I think we're past the following point, but really: I'm not interested in any coaching metric that by definition REQUIRES us to be down 20.

20 point comebacks show that a team has resolve and guts. Being down by 20 points signifies serious problems in talent and execution.

So basically, you just want to beat the strong teams, and destroy the weaker teams by 20 or more points? :skeptic:

First game where the team and QB got in synch and played inspired. Up until then even the wins were dicey - fumble / non-fumble SDSU, etc.

If that's what's going to get a BCS (or in this case, maybe a National, if we're not in a BCS conference) Championship win, sure.

So you're okay with Bronco losing by 20+, just as long as he doesn't come back to win? Like the Utah game at home this year, a game in which BYU was favored to win? Got it.

No what he's saying is the ability to come back from 20 down is less important then trying to fix getting down by 20 in the first place.

Right. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my post.

Coming back from 20 means you did something heroic, but being down 20 in the first place indicates a fair number of problems, no matter who you're playing.

Every team gets down in games, just like every person sins. Being able to make a comeback is important in football, just like figuring out what to do if you fail at being perfect in life.

Bronco needs to figure out how to do it better.
