I think right now Ty is probably struggling with his thirst for coaching QB's with his enjoyment of his current lifestyle. I do think he's interested in playing a more active role with BYU athletics, but he more than anyone understands the time demands coaching at this level require. Right now I think he gets his fill by helping his father and brother operate a QB clinic in Texas.

I agree with that, Ty was back here a lot at the start of the season, and I think the desire to join BYU's program is growing in him every year. Part of it may also be that he doesn't want to move his daughters from their home and school unless he's really sure.

it would be sweet to get him. I don't know him personally, all I have seen is what he has said in the media when asked if he wants to coach and from what he says and the expression on his face it didn't look like he was interested yet. I hope he gets interested and we get him to come coach in some capacity.

No. But money can be produced quickly. When we needed to boost Jaime Hill's pay to keep him here a little longer, Tom Holmoe had NO problem finding cash among the donors to do it.

Speaking of Hill, I hope that if he bolts for another job elsewhere that Bronco persues the DL coach or LB coach at TCU for the DC position here. I think they both understand how it works at TCU and I would love to see them do some of the same here. I know we don't have a couple of possible 1rst rounders on D but I imagine that scheme has helped them as well as talent. Otherwise, look at FL State. About as talented a team as any in D1 and the D sucks. Guys running all over the place covering each other or just lines and grass.

The BSU DC would not come to BYU, but he sure can coach....While Oregon played poorly, some of it is explained by how disruptive BSU's defense was...since that game, OR has rolled. They play a 4-3 and their DL sure seem to play good to me...Fresno ran on them well, and they have given up some big plays, but in the end they sure do their part

The BSU DC seems to be hit or miss, did you catch the Fresno St. game?

I did and BSU was lucky to win--their special teams saved the day. Fresno ran on BSU easily. But in the end BSU stopped them to win and had some huge turnovers to break Fresno's back....If that was BSU's worst game it palls compared to our worst games, defensively...The think is BSU seems to produce well with athletes rated lower than the recruits we get and yet do better. I'll be interested how the USU games goes to see how much we can compare. I actually like Hill and think he does outstanding with what he has..I hope he can recuit better what he needs and then go from there

Plus, if we got him, maybe he would bring Hout along to man our D-Line!

He is. But there are ways to let go those you are loyal to in a graceful manner. I hope Bronco has what it takes to get it done. It's been needed for a few years now.

This quote leads me to believe that you have a particual assistant or assistants in mind that need firing. Can you elaborate? Or would that get you in trouble with your contacts at BYU?

You know, I think I'll abstain from this question. I'll say this, however, that I think Coach Hill is worth every penny we pay him, and probably then some. I would wager that no one on the coaching staff holds as much football information in his head than he does. Also, Coach Doman is invaluable to the program in terms of what he brings to the table as a recruiter. That being said, I'd rather see Ty Detmer as the actual QB coach.

McGregor,

There are several posters over on TBS who claim to have inside knowledge that Coach Hill has lost the respect of many of the defensive players, not because of his knowledge but because of his personality, and that there are rumblings of current defensive players looking elsewhere if Coach Hill is still here next year. Have you heard any such talk?

I am sure Bronco would stomp a mutiny in it's tracks. I hope that there is not anything going on on the locker-room.

If you were a BYU football player and kept getting punked at home, would you point the finger or pull the thumb? Point being, it is easier to blame someone else for your shortcomings than to point to your own weaknesses. On defense, BYU has many weaknesses this year, unfortunately.

Having said that, I think the D could play way more aggressively than they do. They may give up big plays, but I think adding the aggressiveness with bring more fire. It is hard to get worked up when all you do is sit back and react to what your opponent does, instead of trying to dictate to them what they an do.

I think Doman could do a respectable job as the offense coordinator. He has been working under Anae for quite some time. I don't think the current system is a bad system and it has worked very well for BYU. I just think it needs a touch of variety and toughness that Doman could bring. Who knows, I remember when people said the same things about Chow, and looked what he did after he left BYU.

I was thinking the same thing about Chow. This is a very similar situation with a successful OC (based on numbers) but stale in our system. Anae would probably shine just like Chow after he left.

By the way, my iPhone keeps completing the word "Anae" with anaerobic

Maybe that's because the oxygen was taken out of our offense last week.

Here's what I say, and I mean this in the politest way: I'd be very careful what you hear on TBS.

TBS a few years ago was a great source of information. People there were willing to share what they knew in the chat room freely. As word spread, problems grew. But the reputation still persists. My impression is that many of the old chatters with legitimate ties have ceased sharing (many because they or their sources have been asked to--I know of several instances of this), and others have come to fill the void, but whose information is not as reliable. From personal experience, I have seen numerous times information shared there--by some of the more "respected" chatters, btw--that I knew to be flat out wrong. Indeed, sometimes this is the case with TBS staff themselves.

I used to subscribe, but no longer because I don't learn anything new.

As for this Coach Hill thing . . . I've heard probably as much as you, that there are grumblings. I have only spoken to one defensive person this season, and nothing was mentioned, and there was certainly opportunity for it. Remember that there are over 100 kids on the team, and there will ALWAYS be grumbling. I know of a few kids that have left the program because they hated Mendenhall, and had very unsavory things to say about him. You just have to take these things with a grain of salt. I don't think the program misses anyone that left on Mendenhall's account.

Coach Hill is an amazing coach, with an incredible grasp on the game. But he can also be pretty rough on players. I've seen him dress down guys in his bullhorn voice right in front of everyone. He emphasizes smarts, and demands perfection. I wouldn't be surprised if some players took it all personal.

If I run into something that changes my mind, I will share.

I heard Coach Urban Meyer say something interesting on ESPN the other day. Regarding the intense nature of practices, and how some of the players complained that it was too much, Meyer said if his players want it easy then to transfer to another school where they can play and have fun. Championship football requires extreme dedication.

I suggest that if some players on the defense find Coach Hill's personality too demanding they should transfer someplace that isn't trying to win a championship.

Mcgregor,

thanks for the insight. Has BYU really been able to take advantage of its recruiting advantage? THey've lost players to honor code, academics and prima donna issues. They have players on missions who have yet to contribute since Bronco started recruiting. Is it fair to judge the coaching staff, even though it's been 5 seasons since Bronco took over, given some of the personnel problems the team has had to endure? They are getting there, but I think the team really is 1-2 seasons away from becoming as dominate on defense as TCU and the ewetes have been the past 2 seasons. (The defenses of the 06 and 07 seasons were great, but the MWC was much weaker then than now too.)

I'm still willing to give Hill and Anae the benefit of the doubt at least 1-2 more seasons once Bronco's recruits are fully in place. Further, unless they run the table in the MWC again, the DC and OC aren't going anywhere as the offers won't be there.

And as others have mentioned on this thread, I'd love to see Ty Detmer join the staff sooner rather than later.

BTW, TCU has the largest athletic budget in the MWC, even more than BYU's.

1. I have always asserted that Bronco's evaluation must be considered on a time line much longer than other coaches. In a typical and ideal setting, a coach needs at least 5 years to pull a shipwrecked program together; fewer years if he takes over from a ship-jumping coach (eg. Whittingham taking over for Meyer--Meyer left the cupboard pretty well-stocked and with a superb framework for success).

Bronco took over a program in utter shambles, with absolutely NO pipeline. None. First, he had to prove to future recruits that he was a winner, and he had to do with a lot of walk-ons. Then once he proved himself, he could get some better recruits, but then most left on missions. Those are just getting back, but we still need to give them time to develop. Finally, Bronco is able to get an entire class of quality recruits this year. Many will go on missions. The ones that stay in the program still need development time.

Bronco is simply operating under a unique set of circumstances.

2. I think Ty would seriously consider an offer to join the staff if presented one.

3. TCU has a strong, and generally wealthy, alumni base. My best friend in high school was an all-American there, and he's given me a little insight into that school. It's a pretty campus; I only wish they could inspire more Fort Worthians to go to the games.

It's also a tiny campus, and a tiny alumni base. The large majority of TCU fans didn't go to school there.

Small in number. Not that small in terms of wealth. The kids that go to school there are typically rich kids from families with money and connections. TCU is second to SMU as far as this goes.

I am surprised to hear all of the high praise towards coach Hill. From what I have seen on the defense, is an inability to adjust to offensive gameplans, bad scheming in the first place (the bend and break IS NOT working, and WILL NEVER work with our offensive style). You can't "allow" your opponent 8 minute drives whenever they want, and then take 8 minute drives yourselves, it puts your offense in a bad position. TCU style defense works great for our type of offense (which is why they are unstoppable right now, with a mediocre offense...)

I am wondering if you think it is the players' fault then, or that we don't have the right tools on defense. We have NO talent at CB (his former position coaching) and haven't had any since before his time. What is wrong with our defense in your eyes? Is it that he has a great vision and ability, and they are not talented or smart enough to capture that? Thanks. I am not opposing here, I am just trying to understand...
