By 10 minutes into the game the rebound #'s on the scoreboard read 12-2 for byu. so we started strong, but their run the end of the 1st half was created in large part by Baylor hitting the boards and taking byu seriously.

But as for Matt Carlino! It was the Jimmer effect most of the second half. Sno is right. The offense really became a lot like last years'. WHich is great when it works. Brandon and Noah did a little disappearing in the 2nd half. I know they had moments and worked hard at end of game.

BUt with all of Carlino's Jimmer-like effect, he also had critical turnovers. So before folks throw Cusick to the curb, Cusick usually plays very efficiently. He certainly would not have had the very preventable to's that MC did. NOt bagging on MC. A lot of fun games ahead with that guy.

NO wonder he came here. He has Jimmer moxy and heart and maybe game as well. He knew Jimmer would be out and that ROse favors a game that clearly MC--even with only one game of a data point--knew what he had in Rose's offense.

Now lets see how the older players on the hoop team can deal with a hot-shot of a freshman and whether they can handle the shot to their egos. And hopefully they can keep all players in the game and not just sit around waiting for MC to hit a big shot.

Carlino is not Jimmer. We need someone that can score off the dribble and take care of the ball. Carlino can shoot. Just needs to work on taking care of the ball & credit Baylor for pressuring the young PG.

May have to go back and watch, but I think Carlino got most of his points with Davies on the bench. The game plan was to feed Davies and get Baylor on foul trouble. It worked for the most part. We got out rebounded in the 2nd half and stunk at perimeter defense the entire game. That's why we lost.

I didn't see the Jimmer effect at all last night. The guys weren't standing around waiting for Carlino to take over the game, but Carlino did push the offense and make plays, that is what he should be doing.

Cusick may or may not have had similar TOs, but I'm pretty certain he doesn't hit the 3s Carlino hit or get 18 points. Carlino did far more to help win this game than he did to lose it.

As far as egos go, I don't see a football type rift happening at all. First off, he has been playing with these guys for a year. Second, he backs up what is said about him with his play. Third he has attitude/fight to win. The post game interview with him was one of the most telling things about this kid. No matter what they asked him, he kept coming back around to really wanting to win that game.

You put Carlino's attitude/fight in Jake Heaps' body and Heaps could have been an all American this year and Riley would have stayed in obscurity.

Agree, but can we please refrain from tainting the basketball forum with Heaps vs. Riley diatribe.

Sorry, I wouldn't have mentioned the heaps-Riley stuff except that it was alluded to that something similar could happen in bball.

The situations aren't even remotely similar. Although I do agree with DM about not getting too high on Carlion just yet and it's probably too early to warm up the bus on which we're going to run Cusick and Winder out of town on.

Carlino had the second worst plus/minus of the night for BYU at -9 (Austin was -10).

Cusick was second best at +4 (tied with Davies) and Abuou led at +10.

I stand by my statement that I like what Carlino offers and what the team can be with him, but I think it was a huge mistake to break him in against Baylor instead of waiting for a less critical game.

Interesting, but I'm not sure I completely buy into the worth of a player on the court by their plus/minus.

For example, it lists Baylor's Heslip as -1. Kid single-handedly kept them in the game in the first half and got Baylor within striking distance.

It also gives Harstock a zero.

Cusic’s poor defense on Heslip was part of the reason Baylor was able to get to an early lead. Carlino slacked on the perimeter too, but you’d think after giving up so many 3s against Wisconsin he’d have learned his lesson.

I admit I was wrong about Carlino doing a better job of taking care of the ball. My impression was Carlino moved the ball up down the court better and I liked how the offense flowed with him in the game.

Cusic represents no viable threat on the court. Zylstra is extremely hot or cold. Harrison is raw. Cusic is like Matt Montegue (he’ll make passes and not turn the ball over and that’s it). All opponents have to do is key in on our bigs and we’re done. With Carlino on the court there’s a legit threat (assuming he remains consistent) in the back court defenses have to worry about. He gives BYU’s offense two dimensions.

We desperately needed Carlino’s 18 points yesterday. We weren’t getting anything from the backcourt.

Ideal lineup at this time for me would be:

PG- Carlino

SG – Abouo

SF – Rogers

PF – Hartsock

C – Davies

If Calino can take care of the ball, we win a lot of games with that lineup.

Thanks for stating the obvious. "Jimmer-LIKE"

And MC certainly had more of a green light form Rose than Jimmer ever had as a freshman. I know there are contexts of surrounding players and Jimmer had to wait his turn, but Rose letting him have the go so soon was very interesting.

Matt Carlino is no Jimmer, I only mentioned Jimmer because that crossover step back three he nailed reminded me ALOT of Jimmer and the kid was playing in his FIRST COLLEGE BB GAME. We have a lot to be excited about with this kid. Perfect he was not, terrific he was due to the circumstances in which he burst on our bb scene.

Carlino and Cusick had to help down off of their man because our bigs could not handle Perry Jones. He got the ball at the high post and if you dont double down he will score every time, we took our chance that their role players wouldn't shoot lights out and we lost that gamble. I don't think it was bad defense on anyones part. Just really damn good offense.

Cusik in not very good and should not play. He has no offense and can't play defense either. Carlino is going to be a stud, just give him some time. Winder should back up Carlino because at least he can play d and get a board. He also can push the ball and get to the hole. I was most upset with the play of zylstra in this game. He needs to show up for a big game and help the team. He is supposed to be a scorer and all he did on sat was stand around on offense and get beat by every guy he guarded on defense. If Davies plays like he did on sat BYU will go to the sweet 16 this year.

can't say I agree with your assessment of Cusick. I think he's a solid back up. Kid is smart, doesn't turn the ball over, and I think with some more time he'll start scoring more. I like Winder as well. BYU's lucky to have options at the point right now.

He actually reminds me more of Manu Ginobili than Jimmer, but I see a lot of Jimmer similarities too. They practically even look the same.

The dribble behind the back penetration for the layup, the fadeaway swoosh threes.

Kid can ball. Kid can ball.

Team played better with Cusick on the floor, and Cusick didn't make any huge mistakes. Team struggled to put things together with Carlino on the floor, and Carlino had some boneheaded turnovers and took some horribly ill-advised shots in crunchtime when we needed quality possessions.

In the long run Carlino is the guy, but until he gets up to speed and the team figures out how to play with him at the point, Cusick should remain our starter and closer.

Might as well go to the pick and roll with Hartstock. It worked with Jimmer.

This. Kind of early to start a freshman.

It would be nice for this team to get into their offense as they did vs baylor. It will be very interesting to see tonight if Carlino takes over on offense and can distribute more than shoot--and to see if vs baylor he was trying to keep the scoring up or if he kind of chucker. No question he has game and will be exciting to watch. But Cusick does play efficiently and passes first and scores second. Carlino is not Jimmer and will not always make the big shots at least this year. Cusick, iirc, was the leading scorer at his Orem HS--where Travis Hansen played, Kevin Nixon, among others. He can score enough. But he knows his role.

And haven't we all learned about freshmen trying to become the star player?

Well, MC is starting tonight vs Buffalo. We'll see what he does. We could really use a 6th man as a scorer now that Rogers is out for some time. We don't need his scoring as much with our bigs showing well.
C
Cougs_Rule
It just occurred to me that MC may NOT necessarily be starting at the point. Maybe he will take Zylstra's spot, who seemed pretty ineffective vs Baylor. It will be interesting to see.

Gets up to speed? He has been practicing with this team for over a year now. If he is not "up to speed" by now, he never will be. Now if we are only referring to the fact that he hasn't been on the floor in "game" situations with this team and that it what he needs in order to get "up to speed", well that won't ever happen sitting on the bench behind Cusick. I agree wholeheartedly with Rose's thinking on this one...the upside is far greater with Carlino playing significant minutes now even if it means a few "growing pains" for this team at the present time. The pay-off down the road this season will be well worth it in my humble opinion.
